Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are widely being used in many environments (e.g., disaster relief and target tracking), and WSNs localization is still a crucial research area because of the new localization requirements for emerging application domains such as cyber-physical systems and cyber-transportation systems (CTS). In this article, we review different node localization approaches, and point out the issues and challenges of WSNs localization in emerging applications. First, the measurement-based techniques are introduced, and the range-free localization that is further classified into proximity-based localization, one-hop localization and multi-hop localization, is deeply analyzed. Then, the method of nonline-of-sight error mitigation is also reviewed. In addition, we give two representative applications (unmanned vehicle with WSNs navigation and CTS) to state the new obstacles for WSNs localization. Finally, the main issues and challenges for improving WSNs localization are outlined in brief.

Visualization of electromagnetic environment over complex terrain is the current development trend of visualization of electromagnetic situation. Visualization of electromagnetic environment requirement is analyzed in this paper, and a method that using electromagnetic data to render radiation area is proposed. Due to the method, visualization framework is also designed. Electromagnetic data need in framework is fast computed by the simplified Longley-Rice model, and together with simulation platform of terrain built by SRTM data, electromagnetic environment is visualized perfectly.

Collision detection is one of the major issues of virtual reality, including calculating the distance between two objects in space. In this paper, the proposed method based upon the technique of splitting the NURBS surfaces. Firstly, through the interpreting factor to adaptive subdivision surface, and then gradually subdivision surface for the control points with increment algorithm surrounded by constructing a convex hull, based on the distance between the convex hull the GJK algorithm instead of the bounding box algorithm, improve the speed of the algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new image segmentation approach based on rival penalized controlled competitive learning (RPCCL) and color quantization technique. First, we perform median filtering on input image. Second, the initial color centers are selected by color quantization algorithm. Then after several iterations, the RPCCL clustering converges and produces the final segmentation results. We carry out experiments and quantitative evaluation based on Berkeley Segmentation Database (BSD300). The results show that RPCCL method is superior to K-means clustering.

In order to evaluate the network public feeling hotspot accurately and comprehensively, a set of network public feeling hotspot evaluation index system is proposed. Based on analytic hierarchy process and a combination of qualitative and quantitative evaluation techniques, network public feeling hotspots are comprehensively evaluated. According to the evaluation value, the warning level can be determined to achieve the appropriate early warning operations. Finally, examples show that this index system and the evaluation method are reasonable and feasible.

It is widely accepted that future wireless communication systems will be a set of different technologies and standards. Such a trend is already in evidence today with 3G systems beginning to work seamlessly with wireless LANs to provide ubiquitous access. By developing REAL (REconfigurable Adaption Layer) embedded in protocol stack, REALISM (REconfigurable Adaption Layer for Integrated SysteM) offers an integrated communication platform to across heterogeneous cellular and WLAN (Wireless Local Network) access technologies. By investigating the main modules of the REAL system, the implementation of the REALISM in the RRM (Radio Resource Management) processes are discussed, including channel allocation issue for wireless networks.
