Multimedia applications are fast becoming one of the dominating workloads for modern computer systems. How to make use of multicore computing resources to accelerate multimedia applications has become a common concern problem. However, potential speculative procedure level parallelism in multimedia applications has not yet been explored thoroughly. This paper proposes a procedure level speculation architecture for accelerating multimedia applications, including its speculative mechanism and analysis method. It also takes several applications from Mediabench to analyze their coverage parallelism, thread size, inter-thread data dependence feature and potential speedup. The experimental results show that: (1) the best adpcm application can get a 12.2x speedup in procedure level speculation;(2) limited parallelism coverage and severe inter-thread data dependence violations badly affect speculative procedure level parallelism in some multimedia applications.

An improved adaptive algorithm combined with Least Mean Square (LMS) and Recursive Least Squares (RLS) algorithm is presented in this paper. This study explored the effect of screen luminance, subtitle, and viewing angle on preferred viewing distance for liquid crystal display high-definition television (LCD-HDTV). The results showed the mean preferred viewing distance was 3246 mm, about 4 times of television width. Preferred viewing distance increased as the scale of screen luminance went upward from scale 10 to scale 60, then decreased from scale 60 to scale 90. Whether there was subtitle or not did not have significant effect on viewing distance. Moreover, viewing angle was highly correlated with preferred viewing distance. The more deflected from the direct front view, the shorter the viewing distance was.

In order to achieve parallel algorithm ported from serial algorithm, this paper proposes a simplified model based on MPI checkerboard decomposition. The process of analysis, design and implementation of parallel program will be speed up, by emphasizing data and calculation decomposition. Jacobi algorithm is used as an example to explain this simplified model. The example results show that simplified model is more suitable for implementation of parallel program than Foster's task/channel model, and checkerboard decomposition has better speedup than row/column decomposition. Furthermore, this simplified model applies to design not only Jacobi algorithm but also other parallel algorithms based on checkerboard decomposition.

Combined with ground weather observation data from March 2005 to October, the MODIS vegetation index products was used to analysis the sensitivity of Ratio Vegetation Index (RVI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) under different coverage of surface. Together with the MODIS land surface temperature products to form the feature space of Ts/RVI, Ts/NDVI and Ts/EVI, from which obtaining the TemperatureVegetation Dryness Index (TVDI). Based on TVDI, the 0-20 cm relative soil moisture is acquired. Results show that the average soil moisture retrieved from Ts/EVI is closer to in situ data. Average retrieved soil moisture relative to average verification soil moisture has a deviation of 2%-l2%. However, the Ts/RVI has a better accuracy of retrieving soil moisture under vegetation coverage of higher than 0.6, while Ts/EVI performs better for inversing soil moisture under low vegetation coverage of lower than 0.4.

In GPSR algorithm's perimeter forwarding mode, the right hand-rule is able to ensure the GPSR protocol can go out of the "hole", but it makes the choice have arbitrariness to some extent, which often lead to find larger routing hops. An improved GPSR routing algorithm using double-hands rule is proposed to resolve the "hole" problem of GPSR in wireless sensor networks. The double-hands rule includes left-hand rule and right-hand rule. The right-hand rule is the same as the GPSR algorithm's right-hand rule, the left-hand rule derives from the right-hand rule, which means that the improved GPSR algorithm will use the left hand without using the right hand to estimate how to choose the next hop node in perimeter forwarding mode. The improved GPSR routing protocol has also kept the characteristics of GPSR algorithm, such as low complexity and easy realization. At the end of this paper, it compares GPSR routing protocol's network performance by using NS-2. Simulation results show that the improved GPSR algorithm has significant performance improvement and proved the efficiency of the proposed solution compared to original GPSR in delay and packet arrival rates.

This paper describes and surveys the techniques used in facial animation. The techniques are discussed from two aspects: the techniques of facial modeling and the techniques of data acquirement of facial animation. The techniques of facial modeling are classified into four categories: shape interpolations, parameterizations, muscle-based modeling and pseudo-muscle-based models. And the techniques of animation data acquirement are classified into three categories: speech-driven techniques, image-based techniques and data-capture techniques. The generation, the main ideas, the historical use, and the strength and weakness of each technique are described in detail.
