This comprehensive and authoritative text/reference presents a unique, multidisciplinary perspective on;. Rather than focusing purely on the state of the art, the book provides viewpoints from world-class researchers reflecting broadly on the issues that have shaped the field. Drawing upon many years of experience, each contributor discusses the trends followed and the progress made, in addition to identifying the major challenges that still lie ahead. Topics and features: examines each topic from a range of viewpoints, rather than promoting a specific paradigm; discusses topics on contours, shape hierarchies, shape grammars, shape priors, and 3D shape inference; reviews issues relating to surfaces, invariants, parts, multiple views, learning, simplicity, shape constancy and shape illusions; addresses concepts from the historically separate disciplines of computervision and human vision using the same “language” and methods.

I was shocked to see a student’s report on performance comparisons between support vector machines (SVMs) and fuzzy classi?ers that we had developed ***?cationperformanceofourfuzzyclassi?erswas comparable, but in most cases inferior, to that of support vector machines. This tendency was especially evident when the numbers of class data were small. I shifted my research e?orts from developing fuzzy classi?ers with high generalization ability to developing support vector machine–based classi?ers. This book focuses on the application of support vector machines to p- tern classi?cation. Speci?cally, we discuss the properties of support vector machines that are useful for pattern classi?cation applications, several m- ticlass models, and variants of support vector machines. To clarify their - plicability to real-world problems, we compare performance of most models discussed in the book using real-world benchmark data. Readers interested in the theoretical aspect of support vector machines should refer to books such as [109, 215, 256, 257].

This ground-breaking text/reference diverges
from the traditional view that computervision (for image analysis) and string
processing (for text mining) are separate and unrelated fields of study,
propounding that images and text can be treated in a similar manner for the
purposes of information retrieval, extraction and classification. Highlighting
the benefits of knowledge transfer between the two disciplines, the text
presents a range of novel similarity-based learning (SBL) techniques founded on
this approach. Topics and features: describes a variety of SBL approaches,
including nearest neighbor models, local learning, kernel methods, and
clustering algorithms; presents a nearest neighbor model based on a novel
dissimilarity for images; discusses a novel kernel for (visual) word
histograms, as well as several kernels based on a pyramid representation; introduces
an approach based on string kernels for native language identification; contains
links for downloading relevant open source code.

This text presents an overview of smart information systems for both the private and public sector, highlighting the research questions that can be studied by applying computational intelligence. The book demonstrates how to transform raw data into effective smart information services, covering the challenges and potential of this approach. Each chapter describes the algorithms, tools, measures and evaluations used to answer important questions. This is then further illustrated by a diverse selection of case studies reflecting genuine problems faced by SMEs, multinational manufacturers, service companies, and the public sector. Features: provides a state-of-the-art introduction to the field, integrating contributions from both academia and industry; reviews novel information aggregation services; discusses personalization and recommendation systems; examines sensor-based knowledge acquisition services, describing how the analysis of sensor data can be used to provide a clear picture of our world.

This practical and authoritative text/reference presents a broad introduction to the optimization methods used specifically in computervision. In order to facilitate understanding, the presentation of the methods is supplemented by simple flow charts, followed by pseudocode implementations that reveal deeper insights into their mode of operation. These discussions are further supported by examples taken from important applications in computervision. Topics and features: provides a comprehensive overview of computervision-related optimization; covers a range of techniques from classical iterative multidimensional optimization to cutting-edge topics of graph cuts and GPU-suited total variation-based optimization; describes in detail the optimization methods employed in computervision applications; illuminates key concepts with clearly written and step-by-step explanations; presents detailed information on implementation, including pseudocode for most methods.
