Detection of femoral fractures from X-ray images requires multiple scans which can compromise on the procedure being cost effective as well as delay the need for immediate surgery. Bone mass or bone mineral content is currently assessed most commonly via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Procedures and cross-sectional techniques like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and quantitative computed tomography (qCT) have been proved to provide useful information along with the DEXA scans like the metrics of the bone structure, density, and quality of the bone. However, such procedures are extremely costly and unaffordable for large masses. To make the process cost effective, faster, and efficient, it is proposed to extract a lot of information from the X-ray scans itself as they are cheap and economically affordable. The large population which suffers from osteoporosis is the older generation with an average age greater than 60 years, undergoing and bearing the cost of frequent MRI, qCT, or DEXA scans which is economically difficult for a greater chunk of this population. Hence, it is very necessary to compute and detect these fractures in early stages and from economically viable options like X-rays. Hence, this paper intends to analyze X-ray scans using CNNs and Mask R-CNNs and extract regions of fractures mainly intracapsular and extracapsular which are the major regions of occurrences of proximal femoral fractures. © 2021, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Android is an open-source platform for numerous applications. It is playing a major role in the current world and used for handling users personal and confidential data. Android mobile users can download various applications and certainly upload them easily without any cost and authorization through Google play store. Due to this, Android threats may occur, and these are spreading easily leading to various types of Android malwares which are growing around the planet and effecting user’s personal data, their systems, and reputed organizations harming the sensitive information. There are two mechanisms which propagate for Android malware detection. They are signature-based techniques and permission-based techniques. Signature-based techniques were used for detection of unknown malwares based on signature samples, but they cannot detect newly discovered threats like zero-day attacks, which are not known to the world before they are seen in the wild. This paper deals with a survey on malware detection techniques. In this survey, it is observed that Android malware detection techniques of permission-based systems perform more efficiently. There are discussions on various detection mechanisms and machine learning algorithms used in Android malware detection, and this paper highlights their advantages as well as disadvantages. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Music is a sound that arises sensations in human mind and body. Music, since the beginning of time, has been present in every culture and life form, in audio and symbolic form, and in physical or digital mode of communication. While availability and scope for advancements increase exponentially, so does the need to search, compare, and organise music. Music industry has been striving towards finding the best possible approach to categorise music whether classification on the basis of emotions, instrumentation, genres, or any other music information will be most efficient as well as useful to listeners and music service providers. With the aim to support the best music experience, the current study statistically shows, with the help of prior research in music information retrieval and implementation of several powerful machine learning-based technologies, that genre classification, that too, ensemble-based, can be as accurate as 73.17%. The study analyses the performances of all models towards genre classification and concludes by proving max-voting ensemble-based models to be more accurate than each component classifier and advanced ensemble models and also optimal for real-world music genre classification as compared to prior experiments on GTZAN database, which is the novel contribution of the study. © 2021, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Machine learning (ML) is a convention of using specified algorithms to get data, acquire some knowledge from it, and making a prediction about something in the nature. In ML, regression algorithms are used to anticipate output values basing on the input attributes from a dataset. Selecting a good ML algorithm will be helpful for predicting better outputs. It is also influenced by several parameters like data size, quality of the output, training time, etc. This paper is based on analyzing the dataset of different universities for predicting the chance of being admitted in that university. It will support the students to recognize the probabilities of their admission to a university being considered. Similarly, it will revile them in detecting the universities which are proper for their profile and also guide them with the particulars of those universities. The execution of the regression algorithms–Multi-linear regression, polynomial regression, decision tree regression, and random forest regression are examined on the dataset. This paper investigated a feature learning problem, where localized and part-based representations are embedded in dimension-reduction progress. We propose a subspace learning model based on nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) framework. The proposed NMF model incorporates wisely the spatial location information constraint to the base matrix, the manifold and max-margin penalty to the projective feature matrix for enhancing the capability of exploiting much information of the original data. Experiments on facial expression recognition scenery reveal powerful data representation ability of the proposed NMF method that enables dictionary learning and feature learning jointly. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The paper introduced a model reduction algorithm based on Schur analysis. The main idea of the algorithm is to preserve the dominant points of the original system in the reduced system through the use of Schur analysis to arrange the polar points in descending order of dominance on the main diagonal of the upper triangular matrix A. The paper also proposed a solution that the model reduction algorithm based on Schur analysis can reduce order for both stable and unstable systems. Illustrative examples demonstrated the correctness of the proposed solutions and algorithms. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Digitalization is a driving force for new applications of artificial intelligence in the industrial context. In the last decade new and optimized machine learning methods, tools and corresponding Hardware became available. But their utilization in industrial applications is very challenging, due to different requirements and conditions. In order to bridge that gap, trained machine learning algorithms need to be integrated in current control system environments, which implies a setup of the application program based on components of similar interfaces and a standardized behavior. Hence, a mapping of well-known and broadly applied state machines, such as the ANSI/ISA-88 (also known as PackML) states and modes for batch control, to generic interactions of reinforcement learning algorithms is presented in this contribution. Additionally, a simplistic proof of concept using reinforcement learning in a simulation of a coil transport system for cold rolling steel mills is shown. Gait patterns of Cerebral Palsy (CP) patients have been used for cluster and classification analysis. Diplegia is the paralysis of one or more body parts which may be caused by CP and may come in various forms. Current clinical practice in gait issue diagnosis relies heavily on observation and is prone to human error. Following previous studies, the effectiveness of introducing modern machine learning techniques and processes in improving the classification accuracy on gait video data was investigated. This paper proposes a novel feature engineering approach by transforming the original video into overlapping sub-clips which not only maintains important features but also reduces training time. Multiple machine learning models have been constructed to examine their individual performances before ensembling them to improve overall performance. The ensemble architecture consists of two stages, a probabilistic-based aggregator and normalizer and a performance-weighted ensemble. Finally, the model classification accuracy was able to achieve over 95%, a marked improvement from the results obtained by the models applied on similar dataset from literature. Hence, this highlights the effectiveness of the proposed method in classification of gait patterns and potentially changing current clinical practice in gait-related diagnosis. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

There are many Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) applications being used in real manufacturing plants. Digital twins with AI/ML/DL capabilities are among these applications. Steel is an important process industry, where such applications have vast potential to provide positive impacts on different aspects, including energy consumption and cost benefits. The Cognitive Plants Through Proactive Self-Learning Hybrid Digital Twins (CogniTwin) project aims at adding the cognitive elements to the existing process control systems, enabling their capability to self-organise and offer solutions to unpredicted behaviours. In NOKSEL pilot of CogniTwin, the main problem is related to very high costs of machines breakdowns. By developing digital, hybrid and cognitive twins, the pilot aims at reducing energy consumption and average duration of machine downtimes. Cognitive twins for Spiral Welded Steel Pipes (SWP) will enable predictive maintenance at the steel pipe plant. Data pre-processing plays a significant role in data mining in ensuring good quality data especially when dealing with industrial datasets. Dimensionality reduction and outliers detection are significant tasks in machine learning and data mining applications. Many industrial real-world datasets are affected by several errors and present a huge number of process variables. This circumstance can cause problems when the data are exploited to develop efficient machine learning-based models. In this paper some automatic pre-processing procedures are proposed considering both detection of anomalous data and informative variables selection to be used before models training in order to improve their performance. The paper proposes three industrial case studies coming from the context of the steelmaking industry and all the obtained results prove the efficiency of a correct and appropriate pre-processing stage. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
