In this paper, Holding Stack Management (HSM), Continuous Climb Operations (CCO), Continuous Descent Operations (CDO), and Trajectory Based Operations (TBO) procedures are assessed in relation to the use of an additional 3D display. Two display seetings are compared, namely 2D+3D and 2D only. Twelve Air Traffic Control Officers (ATCOs) took part in the experiment. Traditional questionnaires such as NASA TLX, TRUST, etc. were given at the end of each 30-minute trial for each display setting. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded during the experiments to continuously monitor the changes of the brain states of the ATCOs. The results of the data analyses show that by using 2D+3D display setting, more positive emotions, but higher stress and workload levels were experienced by ATCOs in TBO, CCO and CDO procedures than in 2D setting. In HSM, reduced stress and significantly lower cognitive workload were experienced by ATCOs when they were using 2D+3D setting.

During the last few decades successive technological advances have brought innovation that facilitates our day-to-day life but also induces business transformation, bringing employment instability and constantly changing required skills. The intent of this paper is to help understanding what challenges workforce must face, which core skills must be mastered and what has been done so far. Reflecting about past challenges, present difficulties, and solutions found along the years may help us in preparing for the future. We first reflect on the changes caused by increased technological advances in every sector of activity during the last decades;then we analyze existing approaches in defining future challenges, present and future critical skills and solutions implemented by policy makers, universities and industry. We also analyze the most common barriers to that implementation, how to overcome them, and how may we prepare to those future challenges.

The present project was born from the interaction between jewellery scale and interior design principles. We had started with drawings and cardboard models around housing typologies inspired by nature, by its asymmetric and modular geometrical shapes, by its capacity to metamorphose. This experimental process was the platform for the creation of contemporary jewellery lines, focusing main principles such as spatiality, abstraction, mutability, versatility ad ergonomics. We had explored the movement of undulating surfaces, the relation between shadow and light, scale variations, the opposition between empty and full spaces, chromatic or texture contrast. On the other hand, jewellery can be an extension of our selves just like interior design, assuming changes everyday life according to our mood. Our methodology also includes 3D software and 3D prototypes without forgetting traditional jewellery skills or the assemblage technique applied to the most recent pieces. From printed components, wastes or mass-produced objects that are no longer useful, crossed with a traditional material like copper, we proceed to the production of limited series pieces suitable for a public who values jewels by its unique design regardless of the value of its material.

The transition from ambiguous and unclear areas of academic enquiry towards well-defined knowledge boundaries confronts design for social change. Research relevant to the epistemological dimensions of the related academic discipline is limited. Identification of Threshold Concepts (TCs) unique to this academic area can help define appropriate knowledge boundaries. TCs are essential knowledge portals that, once mastered, can result in a transformed way of developing knowledge. Transformation may be emergent or protracted. This paper identifies a number of TCs and elaborates on their significance. Data were collected through a questionnaire with participants from academic and social design practice. This paper argues that it is of educational value to consider that some TCs in the related Higher Education (HE) curricula have to do with ways of thinking and practice, rather than the mastering of discrete conceptual ideas. This has implications for curriculum development in the area of design for social change.

Traffic crashes in suburban school zones pose a serious safety concern due to a higher presence of school-age pedestrians and cyclists as well as potential speeding issues. A study that investigated speed selection and driver behavior in school zones was carried out using two populations from different topographical and cultural settings: Puerto Rico and Massachusetts. A school zone from Puerto Rico was recreated in driver simulation scenarios and local drivers who are familiar with the environment were used as subjects. The Puerto Rico school simulation scenarios were replicated with subjects from Mas-sachusetts to analyze the impact of drivers' familiarity on the school-roadway environment. Twenty-four scenarios were built with pedestrians, on-street parked vehicles, and traffic flow used as simulation variables in the experiment. Results are presented in terms of speed behavior, reaction to the presence of pedestrians, speed compliance, and mean reduction in speeds for both familiar and unfamiliar drivers.

The JACK ergonomic analysis software was used to simulate and analyze the driver's driving posture and operating behaviors in the cockpit to simulate and optimize the driving comfort of the driver operating a certain model of agricultural material handling vehicle. Through simulation and analysis of the six tools, Comfort Assessment, Lower Back Analysis, Static Strength Prediction, Etc., it was found that the vehicle cockpit's curve of the waist part of the seat was reasonable, but the design had poor comfort levels on the shoulder and neck part, which not only caused fatigue when the vehicle was operated for a long period of time, but also made it challenging for the knees and ankles from sustaining prolonged work at the cockpit. On this basis, the research proposed ergonomic optimization and improvement was also conducted. The research provides a significant basis of reference for designing the cockpits of special-purpose agricultural vehicles.

Our technological world is developing rapidly, and with it, the roles of automation are becoming increasingly safety critical. Automated vehicles that require human input when a design, geographical or capability boundary has been met require effective communication between driver and vehicle to ensure system safety. This paper explores the role of vocal communication in guiding visual gaze during the task of handing over control to a driver after being 'out-of-the-loop' for a set amount of time. This is with the intention of increasing driver awareness of the environment, and explore whether this method is effective in guiding this process. This study found that vocal guidance is highly correlated with visual gaze towards the visual information streams that display information relevant to a vocal cue, indicating that designers could consider the vocal approach alongside head-up interface aides as a means of raising situation awareness during transitions of control.

The article presents a comprehensive research aimed at identification of features to be embodied in new design ergonomic and safe suspended monorails. Survey regarding comfort of use of suspended monorails is presented - the results and conclusions drawn. The main criteria and factors to be taken into account during ergonomic assessment of suspended monorails - both the existing ones and new designed ones - were indicated. Operator's cabin and people transportation units were covered by the survey. Two computer aided analyses were presented as well. In the first one, specialistic software was introduced to create anthropotechnical system and calculate static discomfort coefficient of different segments of a passenger represented by biomechanical model. In the second one, MBS numerical method was used to find solutions which enable to reduce vibrations of the operator's cabin.

The aim of this driving simulator study is to investigate the effectiveness of different speed-reducing measures on a sharp curve of an existing road. Specifically, three perceptual treatments (white peripheral transverse bars, red peripheral transverse bars and optical speed bars) and chevrons are tested by means of a driving simulator over a randomly selected sample of forty-four drivers. The observed driving speeds are finally compared to those recorded under a baseline condition (with no treatment). Results confirmed the enormous potential of driving simulators in assessing the viability and design of several speed-reducing measures, especially those related to drivers' perceptions that are strongly based on human factors issues, thereby allowing the selection of the most effective one in terms of cost reduction and safety promotion, in view of its actual implementation on the field.

This study explored FA system of MLB and NPB, and summarized the cross-cultural difference of FA between MLB and NPB. First, the cognitive biases that are observed in common to both leagues were discussed from the viewpoint of our propensity to inaccurately predict the future. Second, the cross-cultural difference was discussed from the two viewpoints: (1) difference of mindset between two leagues, and (2) difference of authority of commissioner between two leagues. Finally, it was proposed how inefficiencies in baseball markets in sports management (failure in FA) should be avoided for the coexistence of teams and the prosperity of the league.
