This paper focuses on an interview and observational study of two major change programmes, designed to transform workforce safety across Great Britain's railways. The implications of the pace of change and the challenges of user-influenced design are considered in the context of a railway system where there are rapidly evolving technologies and need to consider the impact of cooperative work systems and the skills workers will need to engage with them. The study shows how things have changed over time since the programmes were first introduced, identifying the factors that have influenced this, such as a focus on a continuous improvement culture. Further research directions are proposed, including the need to identify the tools to help predict how future interventions in the change programmes might manifest themselves, e.g. the effects of new technology introduction, or factors outside of the organisation's control such as Government policy change.

Nowadays kinds of research about safety of industrial system greatly improved the knowledge about this field. After 10 years' research and experience about safety and investigation the related research in recent decades, the author found safety discipline worldwide mainly consists of three parts: safety system theory, safety methodology and the relationship between safety and other factors. All of them were studied deeply in its own area. However, some further problems need to be answered about this topic. For a company or organization, how safe is the safety system and is it safe enough? How much of our safety system we can see? How to balance safety and other factors as we know there won't be definitely safe situation while we still should keep the whole thing safe enough? Is it possible to connect different theories in a simple way? The paper aimed to find a way to integrate achievements in this field and presented a new method to solve the problems mentioned above. At first, the theory clarified identification and the important figuration of safety. In mainstream works, Safety has different identification. The theory agreed that safety is the state and confidence without unexpected losses, not mentioned the cases with intent to do harm. The safety is a subjective concept but also can be quantitative in a sense. As an inter-discipline, the safety is born to rely on some other profession. That is why most of safety research has a specific background. These are premises of the theory. Secondly, the theory summarized main factors to indicate the important value of industry safety: safety redundancy. The value of safety redundancy can be calculated and insisted a group of equations. These equalized factors in mathematics constitute main bridges between diverse safety areas. The paper demonstrated and verified the rationality of equations furthermore. With an increase in flight length and duration, long-haul and ultra-long-haul flights require a comprehensive fatigue management approach in order to minimize risk. Currently, regulators manage fatigue with strategies such as duty time limits and minimum number of crew. All airlines have to implement a Fatigue Risk Management System. When considering Single Pilot Operations (SPO) for commercial airliners an approach for fatigue management has not yet been developed. The present paper reviews fatigue management guidelines and mitigation strategies to consider them for a possible application to SPO. An overview over differences between flight durations and crewing in SPO is presented with the requirements for a relief crewmember. Finally, it is argued that flight duration will become more important in SPO but the basics of fatigue management especially can be adapted. Nonetheless, the application of in-flight mitigation strategies will have to be reconsidered and tailored directly to the concept of SPO with respect to its future advanced automation tools and their reliability.

Firefighter's job tasks require intensive physical work and involve a range of movements in a wide variety of hazardous environments and thermal conditions. It is thus critical that personal protective equipment allows firefighters to perform their duties with minimal limitations and maximum safety. However, many studies have shown concerns regarding turnout gear fit and comfort. This paper presents preliminary results of an in-progress study, for which the main goal is to develop design solutions to Portuguese firefighters' protective equipment. With the aim of identifying specific needs from this population, a pilot study was conducted in northern Portugal. Data were collected through an online survey and a semi-structured interview, which allowed a deeper understanding of issues encountered. Findings from this pilot study served as a guide to adjust the study and provided insights to recommend an ergonomic redesign of firefighters' gear.

The percentage of the population aged 65 and over is increasing during the last decades. It is one of the problems that the European health system, and in particular the Spanish system, has to face out. This increase is linked to the rising of dependent people, whose suffer progressive deterioration of both their physical and mental capacities. In this context, technology plays a key role in improving the quality of life, not only of older people but also their caregivers. A technological ecosystem to support patients with mental illness, their caregivers, and the connection with their relatives was developed in previous works. This solution is prepared to evolve according to the users' and organization's needs. In this sense, the present work describes the inclusion of a new software tool, an online sales platform that promotes active ageing, seeking that it can be used and managed by older people who may have cognitive impairment problems. Although there are many e-commerce platforms on the market, they not consider users with special needs. The objective has not been to develop a software prototype from scratch, but to focus on aspects relating to accessibility and usability to improve online stores and apply these improvements to an existing solution, following the philosophy of Open Source software development. This work aims to describe the definition process itself.

The objective of this study was to analyze short-term absences and to associate it with socio-demographic and occupational variables of workers at a poultry slaughterhouse. The factors associated with short-term sick leave (4,344 absences) from July 2014 to June 2015 were analyzed. Descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test and Pearson's correlation were used (p <= 0.05). Most workers obtained 1 to 3 medical certificates per year and were absent from the company between 1 and 2 days. The most common frequency of absences among males was once per year, while among females, it was five or more (p < 0.001). The number of days absent per medical certificate had a positive correlation with the length of time working at the company (r = 0.082;p < 0.001). It was concluded that the majority of the workers obtained more than one medical certificate per year and the longer time working at the company, the more days absent.

Over the last decades a number of guidelines have been proposed for best practices, frameworks, and cyber risk assessment in present computational environments. In order to improve cyber security vulnerability, in this work it is proposed and characterized a feasible methodology for problem solving that allows for the evaluation of cyber security in terms of an estimation of its entropic state, i.e., a predictive evaluation of its risk and vulnerabilities, or in other words, the cyber security level of such ecosystem. The analysis and development of such a model is based on a line of logical formalisms for Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, consistent with an Artificial Neural Networks approach to computing, a model that considers the cause behind the action.

This research investigated college design students' mindset for the "decision to be creative" when they have a design project in front of them;moreover, this research investigated factors that influence students' creative mindset and how educators enhance creative mindset to students. In order to address these purposes, a qualitative triangulation was used. The major findings of this study provide a number of important implications for improving pedagogical strategy, utilizing the concept of the creative mindset within a design education context. Moreover, this study provides directions for future research regarding the creative mindset in design education and suggestions for expanding this study to contribute to other disciplines that is needed creative thinking.

In design development, the architect must plan the space in a way that encompasses both physical and psychological comfort, taking into account the premises of universal design. The ergonomic intervention suffers some limitations due to the flawed design process, requiring a greater cost to adapt the space in specific cases. This study aims to demonstrate the importance of using universal design as a design guideline, to specify the restrictions experienced by people with hearing impairment that impede or hamper the process of social and cognitive interaction and to demonstrate how design solutions can bring solutions to these problems.

Natural gas today is of increasing interest, as it allows to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere. The environmental impact of large parks due to large annual mileage is higher than personal vehicles, however, such a fleet is easier to manage through a single control center. Vehicles of waste collection on gas engine fuel will reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere and the noise level in the morning from the vehicles. Studies on the safety of vehicles on compressed natural gas have confirmed the high level of this vehicles, however, the issues of its reliability remain relevant. The proposed method for predicting potential failures and service planning, as well as forecasting operating conditions, will allow to take into account the prospects for expanding the gas engines vehicles' fleet and ways to reduce the burden on the environment.
