The successful introduction of self-driving technology may depend on the ability of the vehicles' human-machine interface to convey trust to the vehicle occupants. Using a driving simulator, in this experiment we aimed to evaluate drivers' trust on an autonomous system, depending on the feedback the vehicle provided by an assistive cluster's interface. Forty participants were divided into three groups regarding levels of feedback: (a) cluster without feedback (N = 13);(b) cluster with feedback regarding the surrounding vehicles (N = 14);(c) cluster with feedback regarding the surrounding vehicles and the vehicle's own decisions (N = 13). For all groups, a visual search task was introduced as an indirect indicator of trust in the autonomous system. Results showed an inverse relation between available feedback and correct answers. The system was evaluated as trustable and safe by all groups. Overall, the results may contribute to design requirements for future vehicle HMIs, as they indicate that more information does not necessarily convey more trust.

Mental workload is an important indicator of an operator's performance when executing a certain task. As a design concept, it is fundamental for monitoring and assessing his interaction with technological devices, such as imaging systems. A bad design can affect the mental workload of the operator, and therefore, becomes useful to assess it while performing the required tasks. This work presents a tool for cognitive workload assessment that is composed of two open-source and low-cost hardware parts: an electroencephalography system and an eye-tracker. Both are synchronized via an open-source software: Lab Streaming Layer. This paper describes the architecture of the sensor system, considering also specially developed hardware and software components that were included to allow the integration of the different subsystems. In order to show the performance of the system as tool to assess some psycho-physical indicators, examples of dedicated signal processing are also presented.

Textile labels contain important data for consumers about the care and maintenance of clothing, but the knowledge regarding the information being passed on by them is relatively scarce. Existing literature describes how people behave before and after buying clothes but there is few information about the comprehensibility of the graphic symbols that allow consumers to take care of the products. Some studies focus on analyzing the consumer literacy of this information. In this paper, we introduce the results of a survey applied among Brazilian respondents. The inquiry helped to understand the attention paid to labels by the consumers, and their capacity to read the symbols and apply them to clothing care. Based on quantitative and qualitative research, we also try to know the context in which the clothing care is done and by who, emphasizing the importance of developing solutions to enhance people's understanding of this code.

In this study, we will focus on extracurricular activity experiences as a result of taking a physical activity. In recent years, the Japan Business Federation has stressed the importance of communication skills for Japanese university students. However, the effect of physical activity on communication skills and feelings of anxiety due to physical activity experience is not sufficiently considered in Japan. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of physical activity experiences, especially on communication skills and feelings of anxiety (State-Trait anxiety). This study compared the degree of progress of communication skills and feelings of anxiety of the intervention group, consisting of students who participated in extracurricular activities, with the control group who did not engage in any sports clubs. The subjects were about 500 students aged 18 to 23 at a university in the Kanto region of Japan. A paper-based survey asked respondents about extracurricular activity experiences and sport performed in their school days, what type of sport they did, how frequently they engaged in sport, and the purpose of engaging in sport. The survey also consisted of a "communication skills scale" developed by Fujimoto et al. (2007) and the STAI (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) developed by Charles D. Spielberger (1983), which was a well-known questionnaire designed to evaluate anxiety. The communication skill scale was divided into six factors: "self-control", "expressiveness", "decipherability", "self-assertion", "acceptance of others", "relationship adjustment". Our data shows correlations between the amount of sports activities and the improvement of communications skills, as well as a decrease in anxiety. Thus, we conclude that group sport activities seem to help students improve their communication skills and to lower their anxiety.

The paper focuses on the definition of a new approach for the design of accessible sailing yachts that takes into account not only the physical problems of users affected by permanent and temporary motor disabilities, but also the presence of architectural barriers on most boats built to date. Through an analysis of the current state of the art of modern sailing yachts is possible to determine a series of cases in which the user, depending on his physical limits, may encounter problems while boarding or using external and internal spaces. The research aims to define the most suitable solutions, in order to create a reference standard in the field of nautical design for accessibility. The research leads to the drafting of a technical instrument useful to promote accessibility and inclusion on board.

This paper provides a summary of results from a research project commissioned by the Federal Aviation Administration NextGen Human Factors Division to explore the factors associated with air traffic controller acceptance of a Performance Based Navigation (PBN) procedure, "Established on Required Navigation Performance" (EoR). Interviews were arranged at two terminal air traffic control facilities that were "early adopters" of EoR approaches. A total of 38 interviews were conducted with facility personnel, including 24 Certified Professional Controllers. Questions focused on how air traffic controllers integrated the new procedures into their controlling style and practice, and the organizational and operational factors that either supported or hindered controller utilization of the new procedures. A framework of the results is presented, providing insights into how to support air traffic controllers in moving towards trajectory-based operations. The results could be used to increase the probability that the potential benefits of PBN procedures can be realized.

Despite good quality roads and modern transport infrastructure, Arabian Gulf countries suffer from high road mortality rate compared to developed countries. Road traffic injury is the leading cause of death among children and other vulnerable road users in United Arab Emirates. Safe urban mobility is very critical to Dubai's continued economic growth and future development. However, diverse socio-economic and safety culture background of Dubai's immigrant population makes traffic safety improvement quite challenging. An online survey was developed to study tram driver opinions and perceptions related to road user behavior, tram safety challenges and suggestions for improvement. The survey findings suggest developing a positive traffic safety culture in the city to reduce serious injuries and crashes involving trams. The road safety campaign should target new drivers/tourists not familiar with tram traffic rules. Driver training program to be enhanced for reducing tram road traffic incidents.

During the last years we are witnessing a very successful osmosis between innovative and cost-effective credit card - sized computers and education. These computers, equipped with low cost sensors or actuators, can be the "heart" of various DIY robotic artefacts. This environment allows for a mixture of thinking and making activities that can be very meaningful in terms of pedagogy and science. Indeed, similar practices, usually referred as STEM or STEAM activities, are applied in many educational institutions, from primary schools up to universities, with most of the effort to focus on secondary school students. The overall process, although promising at the beginning, is not always straightforward to keep up with. More specifically, as students get more experience, they develop a hunger for more complicated scenarios that usually demand features like remote interaction with simple Artificial Intelligence - A.I. capabilities or sophisticated control of their robotic artefacts. At this moment, trainers should be able to propose simple and stable techniques to their students for implementing such features in their constructions. This paper proposes flexible methods for this to be done by exploiting the very popular MIT App Inventor and Snap! visual programming environments, in conjunction with a modified tiny web server module, written in Python, that runs on a Raspberry Pi credit card - sized computer. Furthermore, this paper reports on simple techniques being used to make robust enough robots by low cost everyday/ recyclable materials like cardboard, wood, plastic bottles or broken toys.

The quality of education in the Nigerian university sector is gradually deteriorating, which becomes highly imperative to identify factors responsible for the this decline which has sometimes been associated with the lingering effect of poor working conditions of academia and students in Nigerian Universities. This study examines the effect of the external environment, on staff and student productivity in Nigerian Universities. A total of three hundred and forty-seven respondents were received from the three hundred and ninety-eight questionnaires that were systematically distributed. Questionnaires were used to collect primary data from the universities which was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Hypotheses were tested using percentages and chisquare statistical method. This study reveals evidence of a significant relationship between productivity and the external environment at 0.000 < 0.05. The study findings show that lack of funding, inadequate training on use of school facilities, poor motivation, amongst others have either hampered or are capable of hindering productivity in Nigerian Universities. It is therefore imperative for key stakeholders managing the higher institutions to exert conscious efforts towards improving the quality of education by creating enabling and conducive work environments which will translate into greater productivity.

The pedestrian overpasses in Metro Manila, Philippines are often taken by commuters especially during rush hours to go to places. However, concerns about design, safety, and security of these overpasses are being raised. These problems become more prevalent at night because of the poor lighting conditions experienced in these overpasses. For these reasons, it was necessary to address the concerns of the pedestrians, to come up with an appropriate lighting standard, and to make design recommendations. Adequate lighting in pedestrian facilities are important for they give a sense of safety and security to the people traversing them. Moreover, good visibility prevents accidents in these areas especially at night. The Philippines, particularly Metro Manila, is not the safest place to experience commuting for various crimes related to theft and robbery are not uncommon. Moreover, pedestrian facilities such as pedestrian overpasses are deemed to have poor lighting at night - making these places unsafe to the eyes of the commuters. To address these issues, surveys regarding their perception and lighting preferences were gathered both online and on-site. The overpasses that were put into focus for the evaluation and data gathering for the on-site survey were three (3) of those in Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City. These overpasses are frequented by commuters for they are surrounded by different establishments and institutions such as hospitals, churches, malls, and universities. From the data gathered, the results showed that these overpasses did not have proper lighting causing the commuters to lack visibility, security, and confidence. Within the parameters set by the researchers, a bulb with a luminous flux of 1,300 lx (measured 11 in. away from the light source) gave the best results in terms of security, visibility, and confidence. Moreover, even a relatively little increase in lighting intensity was acknowledged and felt by the commuters since these overpasses did not
