Data is a powerful tool to make informed decisions. They can be used to design products, to segment the market, and to design policies. However, trusting so much in data can have its drawbacks. Sometimes a set of indicators can conceal the reality behind them, leading to biased decisions that could be very harmful to underrepresented individuals, for example. It is challenging to ensure unbiased decision-making processes because people have their own beliefs and characteristics and be unaware of them. However, visual tools can assist decision-making processes and raise awareness regarding potential data issues. This work describes a proposal to fight biases related to aggregated data by detecting issues during visual analysis and highlighting them, trying to avoid drawing inaccurate conclusions.

The work was dedicated to the topic of "bike-sharing systems", or short-term bicycle rentals, available in modern and smart cities. The aim of the article is to present how travel databases can facilitate management and development of bike-sharing solutions. The article is based on a case study of a bike-sharing system in Budapest. The article also includes a statistical analysis based on data collected in 2017 and 2018. Research results on travelling in specific years enable, among others, to predict seasonal changes, as well as determine the attractiveness of individual docking stations. The article contains selected research results in this area.

X-rays are the most commonly used medical images and are involved in all areas of healthcare because they are relatively inexpensive compared to other modalities and can provide sensitive results. The interpretation by the radiologist, however, can be challenging because it depends on his experience and a clear mind. There is also a lack of specialized physicians, mainly in the least developed areas, which increases the need for alternatives to X-ray analysis. Recent research shows that the development of Deep Learning based methods for chest X-rays analysis has the potential to replace the radiologists analysis in the future. However, most of the published DL algorithms were developed to classify a single disease. We propose an ensemble of Deep Neural Networks that can classify several classes. In this work, the network was used to classify five chest diseases: Atelectasis, Cardiomegaly, Consolidation, Edema, and Pleural Effusion. An AUC of 0.96 was achieved with the training data and 0.74 with the test data.

The complex flight procedures and various operating devices form a sophisticated operational context in flight, and the aircraft may encounter multitudinous risky factors. A large number of surveys show that human error is the most important factor in aviation accidents. The flight crew needs pay more attention to operational risks in critical flight-phases, and it is a serious concern for aviation safety to conduct human reliability analysis (HRA). However, the issues of lacking data, and the complexity of human behavior have greatly reduced the applicability of well-established HRA methods in flight context. The main purpose of the study is to determine human error probability (HEP) for specific flight tasks and predict safety level of operation in flight. This paper adopts a simplified Cognitive reliability and error analysis method (CREAM) to quantify human reliability for critical flight-phases. The example of HRA of the Boeing 737-800 operation process is utilized to demonstrate the proposed model. The results provide contributions to aviation safety and realizes the effective assessment of human reliability for specific flight tasks.

Due to the technological evolution on wearable devices, biosignals, such as inter-cardiac beat interval (RR) time series, are being captured in a non-controlled environment. These RR signals, derived from photoplethysmography (PPG), enable health status assessment in a more continuous, non-invasive, non-obstructive way, and fully integrated into the individual's daily activity. However, PPG is vulnerable to motion artefacts, which can affect the accuracy of the estimated neurophysiological markers. This paper introduces a method for motion artefact characterization in terms of location and relative variation parameters obtained in different common daily activities. The approach takes into consideration interindividual variability. Data was analyzed throughout related-samples Friedman's test, followed by pairwise comparison with Wilcoxon signed-rank tests with a Bonferroni correction. Results showed that movement, involving only arms, presents more variability in terms of the two analyzed parameters.

Good bra design has an important impact on the healthy development of women's chest, especially on the breast health of adolescent girls. This paper selected Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China for field interviews and questionnaires to collect girls' needs and expectations for bra design. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to select the demand factors that have a greater impact on bra design: chest protection, corrective posture, size standards and pain relief, and the weight ratio of different factors was defined. It is found that protecting the chest and correcting posture are the most important requirements of bra design for adolescent girls. Establishing the size standard of underwear for adolescent girls and alleviating the pain during development are important complements to the optimization strategy, which can provide basic data support for further optimization research of underwear design for adolescent girls.

This paper aimed to assess the risks related to upper limbs repetitive movements in work tasks in a poultry slaughterhouse. The study was carried out in a poultry abattoir in which 180,000 chickens were slaughtered daily, with 2,000 workers distributed in three shifts. To evaluate the risks related to upper limbs repetitive movements, 10% of the workers were evaluated using the OCRA checklist. The workers performed 79.8 +/- 21.7 technical actions per minute (10 points on the OCRA checklist). The overall mean OCRA checklist score was 18.9 +/- 4.2 (medium risk). The right upper limb score (18.5 +/- 4.5 - medium risk) was not significantly different (p = 0.128) from the left upper limb (17.8 +/- 4.5 - medium risk). Among the 35 tasks analyzed, two were classified as high risk (6%) and 33 presented medium risk (94%).

This paper aims to contribute to the discussion in design teaching and its consequent research context, considering participatory practices and methodologies. We propose a methodologic map, which will assist the process of synthesis expressive code and also boost the relationship between graphic expression and semantics in design practice. At the end, an attempt is made to evaluate if the association of semantic elements with graphic elements promote the convergence between the project goals and the synthesis of expressive codes, while facilitating the interpretation and creation of new graphic products.

To better understand the effects of distracted driving on crash causation, forward roadway glance durations need to be carefully examined. Secondary tasks that impose high cognitive load lead to spillover effects that are moderated by the duration of the forward roadway glance within an alternation sequence involving both, in-vehicle and on-road glances. Spillover effects diminish the hazard anticipation ability of drivers. When alternating glances in a time series, the probability of detecting a spillover is invisible and the hidden state depends on the amount of time that has elapsed since the secondary task was initiated in the current state which is in contrast with the hidden Markov theory, where there is a constant probability of changing state given spillover detection in the state up to that time. No research estimates the probability of spillover detection in a time series with an explicit glance duration. In the current effort, we apply a semi-hidden Markov model where secondary task severity is used as an observation to infer hidden state and relax the assumption of constant state duration. Based on the reliable accuracy of the task itself, and the proposed model, different sequences of secondary task during various time window were tested for spillover detection. With a threshold of 50%, different forward roadway glance durations are required in each sequence associated with different types of secondary tasks.

Computer-Supported Collaborative Work is a multidisciplinary research field and is the core of our society, forged with difficulties and benefits, however, one of its main problems is that the collaboration success is difficult to achieve and probably impossible to guarantee or even predict. Given that collaboration is a coordinated, synchronized activity and it is the result of a continuous attempt to construct and maintain a shared conception of a problem, it can be inferred that for collaboration to occur, there must be a shared understanding of the problem that it is being resolved. For this reason, the shared understanding of the task is an important determinant of the performance of groups. This is why this paper presents an initial proposal of a process for the shared understanding construction in a problem-solving activity, specifically, it shows the validation of the feasibility and usefulness of the process in this construction. For validation, an experiment was carried out with students from two Latin American universities that verified the shared understanding construction through the proposed process, confirming the experiment hypotheses about its feasibility and utility and, in this way, was discovered aspects to improve from the ambit of the high cognitive load that generates and the need to monitor and assist to this shared understanding.
