Due to the development of both computational power of mobile devices and display technology mixed reality solutions have become possible. As the entertainment industry has taken the technology eagerly in use, it has also opened several possibilities to develop solutions to enhance and support work processes in industrial and maritime use. In this paper user-testing of a few of these prototypes of mixed reality solutions is presented.

Algorithmic assurances assist human users in trusting advanced autonomous systems appropriately. This work explores one approach to creating assurances in which systems self-assess their decision-making capabilities, resulting in a 'self-confidence' measure. We present a framework for self-confidence assessment and reporting using meta-analysis factors, and then develop a new factor pertaining to 'solver quality' in the context of solving Markov decision processes (MDPs), which are widely used in autonomous systems. A novel method for computing solver quality self-confidence is derived, drawing inspiration from empirical hardness models. Numerical examples show our approach has desirable properties for enabling an MDP-based agent to self-assess its performance for a given task under different conditions. Experimental results for a simulated autonomous vehicle navigation problem show significantly improved delegated task performance outcomes in conditions where self-confidence reports are provided to users.

The work is devoted to an experimental investigation of visual perception of symmetry. Symmetry participates in the mechanism of the evolutionary adaptability of a living organism, providing the form that is optimal for existence. Not only all living beings, but also objects created by their creativity, one way or another, correspond to the laws of symmetry. Functional expediency was transformed into such aesthetic categories as structural proportionality, harmony. The main developments of psychophysical research are carried out in areas in which qualitative characteristics of the perception of symmetry are used, such as emotional reaction, aesthetic experience, imaginative association, and even taste sensations. The goal of this work is an experimental study of the metric properties of perception and reconstruction of elementary symmetries as a manifestation of symmetry models of human intelligence. The experimental research was implemented on a computer in the format of the reconstruction of a partially given symmetry composition. The subject had to finish the composition in accordance with the transformation of the given symmetry. Independent or regulated factors are symmetry elements, symmetry objects and symmetry transformations. The dependent or resulting factors are functions of the regulated factors and reflect the accuracy of the reconstruction of a given symmetry composition. The visual perception of mirror symmetry in a vertical configuration for a "point" object is characterized by statistically significant stable correctness of the average value on the population and the horizontal-vertical anisotropy of errors for individuals;axis symmetry direction is a matter of principle. This work represents the first and necessary stage of research related to the perception of arbitrary forms.

Fit and comfort issues in ergonomic designs contain both physical fit and users' comfort perception, which are important for products with increasing requirements based on user experience, such as hearing aids. In this study, 3D ear was modelled as a reference to determine the size and shape of in-the-ear hearing aids. Four models and twelves sizes of hearing aids were customized designed based on the anthropometric reference model. The prototypes were 3D printed with Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Polylactic Acid (PLA), and Nylon materials. The study revealed the differences of user experience with the changes of product parameters, including size, shape and material, which suggested scaling range and proportion for research in customized design of hearing aids. The study contributed to a better understanding of the relationship between anthropometry and hearing aid design for further research on generalizing comprehension of users' perception.

Given the plethora of Reinforcement Learning algorithms available in the literature, it can prove challenging to decide on the most appropriate one to use in order to solve a given Reinforcement Learning task. This work presents a benchmark study on the performance of several Reinforcement Learning algorithms for discrete learning environments. The study includes several deep as well as non-deep learning algorithms, with special focus on the Deep Q-Network algorithm and its variants. Neural Fitted Q-Iteration, the predecessor of Deep Q-Network as well as Vanilla Policy Gradient and a planner were also included in this assessment in order to provide a wider range of comparison between different approaches and paradigms. Three learning environments were used in order to carry out the tests, including a 2D maze and two OpenAI Gym environments, namely a custom-built Foraging/Tagging environment and the CartPole environment.

In the current paper, a set of 20 synthesised sociotechnical principles [1] is used to examine how the multidisciplinary teams' performance affects the project design delivery. The paper aims to address the following research objectives: (1) whether an approach based on the 20 sociotechnical principles [1] is one that can lead to successful project design;and (2) identify and analyse risk factors from a Sociotechnical System (STS) perspective. To this end, the above objectives were achieved by analysing the team performance of students participating in a collaborative design case project at Heriot-Watt University. The case study findings confirmed the importance of the sociotechnical principles [1] and risk factors associated with a collaborative design project. Overall, the findings demonstrate the relevance of the sociotechnical principles for addressing project design problems.

Nowadays requirements and challenges for production systems have led to an increasing importance of flexible assembly processes. Arising technologies in the context of Industry 4.0 provide previously unknown possibilities for human-oriented automation. To exploit those possibilities effectively, the research project A4BLUE aims to develop and evaluate sustainable and adaptive workplaces that are human-centered and best automated for dynamic environments. As part of the research project, a methodology is developed to determine the optimal automation configuration in relation to context and situation. The present work provides an overview of the methodological approach, implemented as a software prototype within the A4BLUE Adaptive Framework. The methodology takes into account the aspects of worker satisfaction as well as economic factors by adding a systematic, process-related logic to validated approaches. In the present paper, the cost-based module of the methodology is outlined based on process characteristics and manufacturing targets of assembly systems.

With the development of digital technology, the virtual space is expanding, and enhancing the perception of the place becomes an important way to improve the user experience in physical space. As a space carrier of multi-culturalism, the university campus aims to be an inclusive and dynamic environment, which helps the integration of science, technology, history, society, politics and economy, and makes university to play a more innovative role. This paper conducts a questionnaire survey on the university campuses in Shanghai and a case study on the campus of East China University of Science and Technology. Through the observation of human behaviors, the relationship among inner drive, perception and external behavior is analyzed from the perspective of environmental perception. In addition to the basic five senses, activity perception and time perception also play an important role in this process. Consequently, this paper put forwards a perception reshaping strategy for campus public space, that is hierarchically sharing space at time level by multi-perception elements to achieve long-term enculturation. The strategy uses the single-day timeline as the basic perception dimension. By deepening the contextual association of the site features of the campus public space in different time periods, the perception difference is strengthened. By creating inclusive and adaptable physical space and various multi-perception elements, the campus public space will be richer and can meet the diverse needs of people.

This paper introduces the mobile robot CRAS (Climbing Robot for Autonomous inSpection) for autonomous NDT inspection of weld beads from industrial super-duplex steel vessels. The surfaces to be inspected are under high temperature (80 degrees C-135 degrees C) and the inspection is based on ultrasound. CRAS presents magnetic wheels as adhesion method and a perception system able to identify and follow weld beads. This paper approaches some current challenges for such inspection mainly due high temperatures and adopted solutions as well as future steps of CRAS development.

The recent trend in developing embedded systems tends towards the many-core processors. The essence of the many-core can be experienced only when the communication and the allocation of the packets to different cores are considered and optimised. The increase in the number of cores within a semiconductor chip increases the complexity of the communication between the cores. The cores need to communicate to share the data in their cache instead of accessing the data from main memory. The major hindrance in the development of an effective communication system for inter-core communication is the phenomenon of congestion. The proposed work is to detect the congestion before a router causes further bottleneck for communication, rather than managing the congestion. The delay incurred by a router for processing a flit can be found by counting the number of clock cycles elapsed during the flits lifecycle on that router. A threshold on the delay may imply the upcoming congestion on the router. This delay can be useful for finding the idleness and activeness of routers. Identifying the router congestion in a many-core processor can later be useful for effective routing by managing the congestion. These results can be extended further for analysing the effects of congestion on various applications and also for developing routing techniques that can improve the multicore performance. The work uses Booksim2 simulator to analyse the system characteristics.
