Training students to perform accurate and efficient land surveys through hands-on laboratory experience takes time, space, and expensive equipment. To alleviate demands on these resources, we designed and implemented an immersive virtual reality training simulator that closely replicates both the equipment and social experience of land surveying. Our pilot study of 85 undergraduate engineering students shows high levels of student enthusiasm for the approach, which, by virtue of the recent affordability of virtual reality equipment, is now feasible for a multitude of use cases throughout the engineering curriculum.

Enforced by current results of research in the field of the Internet of Things, working with virtual models has taken a significant step forward. To use such technologies in interactive collaborative and blended learning scenarios, virtual, remote and hybrid online labs has a long tradition in the engineering education process. In virtual or hybrid labs, parts of the experiments take place not on real, but on virtual instruments. In the paper, we present virtual design tools, used in a hybrid online lab that supports a course in designing combinational and sequential logic for control systems. We describe a new integrated hardware-oriented design tool called BEAST (Block-diagram Editing And Simulation Tool) supporting a circuit-oriented design process and works as virtual control unit in a hybrid online lab. We also discuss in which learning scenarios virtual control units have proven themselves.

Although female specialists in the STEM area are urgently needed in the work force, the percentage of women in STEM study programs in higher education is still rather low. One reason for this are gender-related stereotypes that still persist in many modern cultures, which associate STEM as being a "male" domain. To actively draw young women towards STEM and Computer Science, we design a workshop for girls in the age group of 10th grade in secondary education. This workshop introduces the girls to machine learning in the application context of fashion and shopping. We define both cognitive and affective learning objectives and corresponding observable outcomes that indicate whether the learning objectives were reached or not. Based on these learning objectives, we develop a didactic concept for our workshop, as well as a web application as a front end for the machine learning application. Finally, we execute a pilot run of our workshop, which we evaluate with respect to participant satisfaction and the achievement of the learning objectives.

Sustainable economic growth can only be achieved by increasing productivity and introducing better services and products. The aim of this research is to identify strategic directions to improve the implementation of environmental innovations in international cooperation between Europe and Ukraine. The paper examines the process of innovative industrial activities in the European Union, Ukraine, and, in particular, at the regional level. A set of new measures to promote environmental innovations has been offered. A taxonomic economic-mathematical model for estimating the integrated indicator of the implementation of environmental innovations in the regional context was developed.

Mobile technology has the ability to change the way education incorporates computers in the teaching process. Mobile devices have distinct features compared to computers, such as portability, touchscreen and a variety of sensors that makes them more suited for young children. Computational thinking is an essential skill in teaching children how to code but it is also a universal problem-solving technique. In this paper we present mobile applications as educational resources that teach young children under 8 years old how to code and advance their computational thinking abilities. We also study whether these applications have proven their educational effectiveness in the classroom based on related scientific research. Finally, we propose characteristics that should be incorporated in mobile applications in order to improve their educational value.

The spatial competence for learning three-dimensional objects in the geometry course makes Augmented Reality a perfect ally, due to its popularity among children allowing them to experience more realistic learning. Also, the use of augmented reality allows to improve the interactive and spatial skills with three-dimensional objects. A mobile interactive augmented reality system with 3D models was developed for the teaching of geometry, allowing the teacher to obtain real-time results of the student's spatial and mathematical competence in a real-world environment. In the mobile system, a playful environment capable of visualizing geometric figures (Cube, Rectangular Prism, Triangular Prism, Pyramid, Cone, Cylinder and Sphere), and formulas to calculate its volume are proposed. After learning the formulas, the student must continue with the game and obtain the highest score without visualizing the formulas in such a way that in a competitive environment they can experience more realistic and beneficial learning to improve their spatial competence. The students evaluated are in the primary level (sixth grade) of two classrooms in the city of Arequipa, Peru, enrolled in a one-week course (4 h a week) entitled "Mathematical Logic", and divided into a experimental group (they used Voluminis) and a control group (traditional methodology). A performance test (post-test) and a satisfaction questionnaire were used. In addition, a pre-test to both groups to determine the same level of knowledge about spatial geometry. The results revealed a positive impact on performance, greater academic motivation of students and above all increased competition among students in the Voluminis game. Thanks to the results in real time the professor observed the learning difficulties of the students and obtained the immediate qualifications of the space competition. In the last decade, the Internet of Things (IoT) technology has attracted lots of attention. This paper evaluates the impact of three different IoT technologies represented in three types of wearables;Smart Glasses, Tracking Devices, and Crowd and Staff Wristbands. The deployment of these devices took place in a number of cultural and sports events in six European counties, as part of the European Commission funded project;MONICA. The analysis focused on the usability of the wearables and their impact on safety and security.

Online collaborative learning has been used since the 1980s, and although the evolution of the Internet and mobile computing has caused its mass adoption, e-learning remains a relevant field of study. Taking advantage of e-learning has driven the development of numerous tools, frameworks, and best practices to overcome the challenges faced by learners associated with the lack of interest and motivation to use online collaborative tools. In this paper, we present the development of a gamified educational network (GEN) focused at fostering and promoting collaborative learning by empowering learners to participate in the online activities by incorporating game elements including a points-based system, ranking, and a modular division. The results of a preliminary usability evaluation indicate that while the usability and user satisfaction of the GEN are both very good, further improvements to its collaborative functionality can be made.

Artificial Intelligence is a branch of Computer Science with complex subjects. A trend in the teaching and learning of Artificial Intelligence is to use software where students modify the source code. However, teachers do not use the freedoms of free software in their classrooms. Based on a previous review, it is difficult to see methodological indications to use or create new programs with these characteristics for other teaching-learning processes. The goal of this work is to develop a model of integration of educational free software to the teaching-learning process of Artificial Intelligence. The authors use several research methods: historical-logical, analysis and synthesis, functional-structural-systemic and modeling. The model has three fundamental components. The conceptual component represents the principles and their theoretical foundations. The structural component represents the main elements that intervene in the integration. The instrumental component constitutes the materialization of the model and contains three stages: preparation, execution and evaluation. The authors used the focus group technique, a pre-experiment and Iadov's satisfaction technique to validate the model. These methods made it possible to verify the relevance of the model, its good acceptance by the teachers and the acceptable satisfaction of the students after the first application of the model.

While agriculture is one of the oldest sector in the human history, the technology used in modern agriculture is quite old. At the same time, modern society starts looking at food not just as edibles, a necessary thing in order to survive but as enhanced nutriments that can have many health benefits. Moreover, some components of agriculture products can be extracted and used as supplements or to enrich cosmetics. In order to maximize the desired effects, it is important to study the environmental conditions that affect the production of such components, and the best period to collect the products. This paper describes GreenDaP: an infrastructure designed and deployed to study the evolution of ripening and climatic conditions in Aosta Valley.
