There is a variety of conversational chatbots that aid in education and they aid students in the process of learning. Similarly, many online tools exist to aid teaching. However, there is a scarcity of tools that help in experimental design and hence to bridge the gap, this paper introduces a conversational agent (chatbot) to augment the design of virtual lab experiments. The chatbot was implemented to answer queries and to help the teachers while using SDViCE tool. The data analysis and results of the research carried on the instructors reveals that chatbots will be useful for designing of virtual lab experiments. The research question we are trying to answer is - Whether the engineering instructors find the chatbot helpful while designing virtual laboratory experiment in the online SDVIcE tool?

Android malware is a growing threat to the Android operating system. Various anti-virus tools are developed to detect Android malware. Most of these tools use Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. ML-based methods are robust and can detect future threats. However, we cannot directly deploy these resource-intensive tools on smartphones as smartphones have a limited amount of resources. In this paper, we propose two multi-stage classification models for the classification of Android malware. The first model is a combination of logistic regression and linear Support Vector Machine (SVM). We use a combination of logistic regression, K-means clustering, and linear SVM for the second model. We divide each model into two stages. The first stage involves the training of the classification model. The second stage consists of a decision function that classifies a given app as benign or malware. The proposed classification models can detect both Android malware and colluding app-pairs. Android application-collusion is a special kind of threat. The proposed classification models are low compute-intensive and straightforward to implement.

With the availability of affordable high-quality recording hardware and video management platforms lecture recording becomes a popular service for students at a steadily increasing number of universities. Since each university has its own infrastructure and general conditions, the introduction is still an individual process requiring a lot of technical know-how and a clear definition of the workflow process. At our university, we currently have about 740 recorded lectures, providing students access via our Learning Management System (LMS) Moodle and via an open source video portal. With a main focus on barrier-free access to learning material in general and hearing-impaired students in specific, we wanted to provide subtitles for all recordings. In addition, subtitles are also very helpful for students who do not have German (our main university language) as their mother tongue. Subtitles should be at least in German, preferably also in other languages in order to support foreign students (such as Erasmus) at our university as well. In this paper we will share our experiences how to efficiently create subtitles in a semi-automatic way. Furthermore, we will share the lessons learned with the introduction of the Open Cast platform and which technical workflow we particularly defined. This workflow is optimized for a moderate growth of recorded lectures - hence feasible for small and medium sized universities - and ensures a maximum of quality. It can be easily adapted to other universities.

Neurofeedback is a therapy of attention and concentration disorders adapted to the individual needs of the patient. Although problems with attention and memory can occur in both children and parents - with or without similar underlying causes - individual training protocols should be used for each person. The estimated duration of neurofeedback therapy is usually no less than 7 h of training. The present study reports on a 35-year-old mother and her 7-year-old child, presenting with the same cognitive problems. Despite individual training protocols, neurofeedback training yielded similar results across parent and child within the non-dominant hemisphere.

Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) is frequently reported when coding hospital encounters, being commonly monitored through acute care outcomes. Variability in clinical coding within hospital administrative databases, however, may indicate data quality issues and thereby negatively affect quality assessment of care delivered to AMI patients, apart from impacting health care management, decision making and research as a whole. In this study, we applied statistical process control and probabilistic temporal data quality control approaches to assess inter-hospital and temporal variability in coding AMI episodes within a nationwide Portuguese hospitalization database. The application of the present methods identified affected data distributions that can be potentially linked to data quality issues. A total of 12 out of 36 institutions substantially differed in coding AMI when compared to their peers, mostly presenting lower than expected hospitalizations of AMI. Results also indicate the existence of abnormal temporal patterns demanding additional investigation, as well as dissimilarities of temporal data batches in the periods comprising the recent transition to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) and changes in the Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) software. Hence, the main contribution of this paper is the use of reproducible, feasible and easy-to-interpret methods that can be employed to monitor the variability in clinical coding and that could be integrated into data quality assessment frameworks.

Problems such as stenosis and occlusion are observed owing to the aging of the hemodialysis patients. Therefore, patients must check shunt function daily. However, analyzing shunt murmurs is difficult because there are individual differences and judging the shunt function requires experience. This study aims to automatically identify shunt function by analyzing shunt murmurs. In conventional methods, the shunt function is identified via support vector machine or random forest. However, the identification accuracy is low as these studies do not consider error of the second kind. Therefore, we aim to enhance identification accuracy by improving the entire identification system, which has the following three parts: data-creation part, feature-calculation and identification parts. To improve the data-creation part, we consider segmenting a shunt murmur that corresponds to one pulse. To improve the feature-calculation process, we consider data augmentation by using sample-movement and expansion-and-contraction processes. The results confirm that the identification accuracy was improved.

School dropout in higher education is an academic, economic, political and social problem, which has a great impact and is difficult to resolve. In order to mitigate this problem, this paper proposes a predictive model of classification, based on artificial neural networks, which allows the prediction, at the end of the first school year, of the propensity that the computer engineering students of a polytechnic institute in the interior of the country have for dropout. A differentiating aspect of this study is that it considers the classifications obtained in the course units of the first academic year as potential predictors of dropout. A new approach in the process of selecting the factors that foreshadow the dropout allowed isolating 12 explanatory variables, which guaranteed a good predictive capacity of the model (AUC = 78.5%). These variables reveal fundamental aspects for the adoption of management strategies that may be more assertive in the combat to academic dropout.

The enhancement of first-year electrical engineering students' skills in building circuits using the breadboard is essential. To overcome difficulties in dealing with internal breadboard connections, Augmented Reality (AR) technology used to build a 3D application. AR could improve students' ability with respect to efficient design and build the electrical circuits in the breadboard due to the support for viewing the internal breadboard connections and learning step by step how to build circuits. This paper will explore the integration of AR into the Introduction to Electrical Engineering course in order to provide an interactive learning experience, in which abstract thinking is supported, and concept visualization, exploration, and evaluation are facilitated during the various stages of the circuits building steps. Such an AR app will permit the students to visualize virtual representations of the circuit on the breadboard in real-world settings by mixing the 3D circuit element models with a camera view of the students' smartphone and 3D animations for circuit-building procedures.

This paper presents the analysis of a group of triples of functions which imply different combinations of t-/s-norms in the weighted fuzzy Petri nets. The wFPN model was realized in the system PNeS for the subject area of passenger transport logistics. The experiment describes the realization of 15 different triples of functions associated in the range between a minimal triple (LtN, LtN, ZsN) and a classical one (ZtN, GtN, ZsN). It is expected to achieve a numerical rise of the resulting calculations in accordance to the change of the triples in the range from the minimal to the classical one. Additionally, the analysis of achieved decisions with the change of triples is considered for the given subject area.

State-of-the-art solutions to the classification of Non-functional requirements are mostly based on supervised machine learning models, requiring a reasonable amount of time in feature engineering. Deep learning, on the other hand, does not need to define features explicitly. This research aims to design and develop an automatic system to classify Non-functional requirements in multiple classes based on deep learning techniques. Specifically, we investigate the design and application of four neural network models;Artificial Neural Network, Convolutional Neural Network, Long Short-term Memory, and Gated Recurrent Unit to classify Non-functional requirements into five classes: reliability, usability efficiency, maintainability, and portability. However, these models require a large, annotated corpus and prone to overfitting. To address this, we proposed a novel framework for text augmentation. This technique uses a sort and concatenates approach to merge two sentences belonging to the same class to generate a two-time increase in data size yet preserving the domain vocabulary. We have compared our results with the state-of-the-art Easy data augmentation approach. Our findings indicate that the NFRs classification model improved when trained with fine-tuned word embedding and CUSTOM augmentation approach. Interestingly Convolutional Neural Network turned out to be an outstanding learner with a jump in accuracy from 60% to 96% compared to the first approach. This simple text augmentation approach can add value for tasks where domain-specific terminologies play an essential role.
