Objective of the present study was to analyze the effectiveness of countermeasures at bicycle crossroads during the driver-cyclist interaction by the use of a driving simulator. Three countermeasures were examined: baseline condition (absence of treatment), colored paved markings and raised island. Forty-two participants drove a suburban scenario with several bicycle crossroads having difference configurations and presence/absence of cyclist. 378 speed profiles were plotted from 150 m before each crossroads to obtain the explanatory variables of the driver behavior. A set of ANOVAs was used to analyze the driver behavior. Results showed that countermeasures affected in statistically significant way the distance at which the driver ends the braking maneuver, highlighting the better effectiveness of the colored pavement. A general improvement of the driver speed behavior was also observed for this countermeasure. The outcome of the questionnaire confirmed that it was considered as the most effective in terms of driving aid.

The establishment of a construction safety culture index is of specific significance as it offers an objective measurement of the status of safety culture on construction projects. Considering the dynamics and complexities in the construction industry, the safety culture on a project may differ from other projects. This paper formulates a safety culture index to quantify the level of safety culture on construction projects in developing countries using the fuzzy synthetic approach (fuzzy set theory). The safety culture index consists of six safety culture categories;these include management commitment, accountability, worker involvement, supervisory leadership, communication, safety education and training. Professionals in developing countries can use the safety culture index to objectively determine the status of safety culture in a more practical way. In addition, application of the safety culture index would be useful to efficiently and factually compare the relative safety culture levels of different projects for benchmarking purposes.

The character-input BCI has been studying as a communication aid for neuromuscular illness patients such as ALS. We focused on input-error in the character-input BCI. It is necessary that the subject has to concentrate high attention to input correct characters in the character-input BCI. On the other hand, it causes an input-error of far character when the subject is distractedness. Hence, we considered that the number of input error of far character may increase when the dementia patient uses the character-input BCI. Therefore, we conducted a character gazing experiment using the character-input BCI to the elderly. Then, we quantified the result of the character estimation of gazed character by calculating the SEDV (Spelling-Error Distance Value). As a result, in the Modarate1 group, the SEDV was 0.41 characters farther than the Questionably significant group. Hence, there is possibility that the character-input BCI may be able to screening dementia.

The main purpose of the article is to study the human factor in the technical systems and objects development, to develop a method of socio-economic design that ensures the safety of systems and objects and reduces the probability of accidents on them. The essence of the article lies in the fact that, according to the authors, the conditions for the safe operation of technical systems and objects should be created in the early stages of designing. At the same time, the safety function should be considered as the main function of the system/object being created, which determines their economic and structural characteristics. This position is proved in the article by analyzing the factors influencing the technical systems and objects creation. The proposed method of socio-economic design of technical systems and objects implies that determining their cost characteristics on the conceive step of their lifecycle is the most efficient if it is based on probabilistic approach. On the next steps of design process, such as concept design and detailed design, a designed construction's price should be estimated basing on its informational (parametric) complexity indexes.

The authors study the issues of integrating modern information computer technologies into marketing processes of the company and into the system of product promotion. Theoretical analysis and generalization of the notion "strategy of promotion" are performed, and peculiarities of development of this notion in information society in the conditions of usage of information and compute technologies are determined. Mobility of the category "marketing mix" is confirmed - especially, in view of quick development of modern technologies and society. Evolution of the components of marketing complex and peculiarities of its component structure in the service sphere and Internet communications are studied. The set of marketing technologies and innovational marketing solutions, based on overtaking development of information and computer technologies, for the elements of marketing mix as to services is determined. The complex character of application of marketing technologies within TTL advertising and simultaneous work of innovational marketing technologies for several components of marketing mix - in particular, product promotion - are substantiated. Description of a range of innovational marketing technologies in the retail sphere is provided, and peculiar information and computer solutions are studied.

In the last years, the ergonomic studies of wheelchairs emphasized only the mechanical functionalities, like materials, durability, and biomechanical aspects of wheelchair propulsion. However, despite the importance of these characteristics for the independence of people, few studies have highlighted the aspects related to their user experience (UX). An Assistive Technology is not objects of desire, like a mobile phone. A wheelchair can stigmatize the user and therefore influence their UX. This paper aims to evaluate the UX and perception of stigmatization, related to two wheelchairs, with different design solutions, by crossing this data with their self-esteem. AttralkDiff2, Perceived Stigmatization Questionnaire and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale were applied to 26 wheelchair users during the visualization of two videos with the wheelchairs in a virtual 3D environment. Results indicate that a wheelchair with an innovative design, presents a better UX and less association with stigma when compared to a traditional wheelchair.

The current hegemony of the mechanistic thinking, deeply rooted in the machine image, and the analysis procedure that involves breaking down complex things into simple ones in order to find their existing meaning, together with a great coincidence, have all led to talk about the human being exclusively, as a mere component or casual factor in risk situations. We make the human being responsible for a load that business managers and politicians would share equally. This is all due to an inadequate global security response. The individual is intentionally separated from the environment. Why? In order to make him causal factor and main subject in risk situations, especially in those with political implications. Our work involves understanding human participation in unwanted events from the ethic idea of responsibility and reliability in all organizations, instead of from the individual error thinking.

Drylands are complex, dynamic social-ecological systems under threat from potential climate change and land-use changes. Mixed qualitative methods, including participatory observation and informal and semi-structured interviews, have been used to capture narratives of livelihoods and environment in Kajiado District, Kenya, with particular reference to a severe drought event in 2009. Analyses have shown cultural changes to be important processes in responding to system shocks and stresses. A Beliefs-Desires-Intentions agent architecture has been employed in an agent-based model to explore the emerging narratives after the drought, offering a means of focussing on these key processes and their implications for the system. A series of iterative periods of fieldwork have allowed model strategy, parameters and assumptions to be tested and refined with the original research participants.

In rural destinations like Douro region, tourism activities may be important to territories' development because they use some of their natural resources and endogenous products, develop another related local economy business, and contributes to population fixation. Technologies can support the promotion and distribution of these destinations, namely digital marketing tools. The present study aims to analyze the influence that some of these tools perceived usefulness, from the tourist point of view, have on a rural destination image. To accomplish this, it was used a sample of 555 tourists visiting Douro destination and data collected were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results demonstrated that tourist's trust in tourism digital marketing tools and their attitude toward these tools have an indirect effect on destination image. Moreover, the perceived usefulness of some digital marketing tools utilized to search, plan or purchase Douro destination, as website, booking and mobile devices, has also a positive effect on this destination image. On another hand, the perceived usefulness of a conventional channel, as travel agencies, has a negative effect on this rural destination image. This research provided some interesting insights for practitioners working in tourism destination marketing.

The paradigm of agile enterprise, which is aimed at the use of market opportunities, is increasingly used in practice. Therefore, it becomes important to provide businesses with the tools to help them identify opportunities appearing in the business environment. At least two general approaches to the identification of market opportunities can be distinguished. The first assumes that the market opportunities arise in the business environment and therefore need to be identified in it. For this purpose, methods of strategic analysis can be used which enable to recognize the changes appearing in the environment as well as methods of marketing research aimed at identification of needs and expectations of the customers. Assessment of ongoing changes in the environment from the view point of the objectives/goals and business resources that are available (own and external resources) leads to the identification of opportunities which are the favorable situations for achieving the enterprise's expectations. The second general approach assumes that the opportunities are created by the company, and therefore it depends on the entrepreneurial activities including the marketing of the product and probing whether the product is accepted. In this paper we focus only on methods of strategic analysis and marketing research as ways of identifying opportunities. We hypothesized that there are differences between the approaches to identifying opportunities and supporting them methods used by businesses small, medium and large sized. In order to verify this hypothesis, studies were carried out on a group of 150 firms. The results provide recommendations for enterprises, especially small and medium sized, how they can increase their ability to identify market opportunities and thereby improve their agility. This paper bases on data collected to prepare doctoral dissertation by Jowita Trzcielinska.
