The pharmaceutical industry is on the brink of entering into the digital age, yet still suffers from fundamental misconceptions and outdated IT systems that inhibit its progress. Four key criteria are identified that have enabled labs to reach the post-modern stage, which are insights generation through advanced analytics, automatic communication through machine to machine interfaces, removal of boundaries for an open lab, and novel means of ensuring trust through automatic submissions. Further progress in these four areas will enable the pharmaceutical laboratory to enter the digital age. Unfortunately, historical roadblocks in the form of an application-centric mindset have so far stifled progress. However, initiatives that supported other industries on their path into the digital age are introduced and evidences for the benefits of the digital age are provided. These span from advanced analytics, data-centric architecture, metadata supported communication, knowledge assisted submissions, to digital maturity models. It is concluded that executives and lab staff within Pharma needs a transition to a data-centric world view to reap all the benefits of the digital age for faster, better, and cheaper drug development. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Credit card is a critical element in digital banking. As modern technology is evolving day by day, credit card fraud is increasing significantly. Many financial companies lose billions of dollars annually because of credit card fraud. Criminals constantly try to discover various rules to require illegal actions. As a result, fraud detection methods are crucial for non-banking and banking financial institutions for minimizing the losses. This paper mainly discusses the performance of random forest (RF), AdaBoost, CatBoost classifiers for classification of credit card fraudulent activities. In this paper, the most important features are also selected by applying these classifiers. Results show that among the classifiers considered, RF and CatBoost have the best performance obtaining 99.92% accuracy in detecting credit card frauds. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The amount of employability among men and women had raised a lot in comparison with olden days. With this increase in employability, the amount of care taken by the parents toward their infants had also decreased. But, in childhood stage, children need proper rest and sleep for proper health and body growth. Thus, most of parents send their infants to their grandparent’s house, and some may taught of living their babies at baby care houses. But all the people cannot keep nanny, and also, it is always difficult for the parents to keep trust on some strangers to look after their baby. But, in any of the cases, parents may not continuously monitor the situations and conditions of their babies. Therefore, an IoT-based baby monitoring system has been introduced which can be made available at affordable cost and works efficient in real time. The system is developed using Node MCU microcontroller, a speaker and a sound sensor module. The sound sensor module detects the babies cry and executed according to the action provided. The BLYNK application server is used to send the notifications to the registered parent’s mobile number as alert message regarding their kids status. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Rule extraction is a process of extracting rules which helps in building domain knowledge. Rules plays an important role in reconciling financial transactions. This paper presents a brief study of intelligent methods for rule extraction. The paper touches upon heuristic, regression, fuzzy-based, evolutionary, and dynamic adaptive techniques for rule extraction. This paper also presents the state-of-the-art techniques used in dealing with numerical and linguistic data for rule extraction. The spread of IoT and wearable devices is bringing out gesture interfaces as a solution for a more natural and immediate human-machine interaction. The "Seamless" project is an industrial research and development experience, aimed to build a virtual environment where data collected by IoT sensors can be navigated through a gesture interface and virtual reality tools. This paper presents the portion of the project concerning gesture analysis, focused on the problem of automatically understanding a set of hand gestures, in order to give commands through a wearable control device. The tackled issue is to build a real time gesture recognition system based on inertial data that can easily adapt to different users and to an extensible set of gestures. This gesture data variability is addressed by means of a supervised Machine Learning approach that allows adapting the system response to different gestures and to various ways of performing them by different people. A context-aware adapter allows interfacing the gesture recognition system to various applications. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A worldwide production process is of utmost importance, since it increasingly encourages the industry to automate its processes to improve quality and productivity, reduce costs, increase operational safety, etc. In this frame, productivity is one of the most important factors to be competitive, which is related to working methods, efficient processes, continuous improvement, and the use or implementation of automation in production processes. In Ecuador, the polymer industries dedicated to the manufacture of paint lack automated processes, which causes delays in the delivery of production batches and a lack of standardization in cycle times. In particular, we focus on the Wesco S.A company dedicated to the manufacture and marketing of paints where the water borne paint is one of the most elaborate products in its portfolio. Despite being a product with an established standard formulation, it lacks automated controls in one of its main processes as the dispersion and mix process. It is currently managed through the activity and clearly operational experience of its operators, which causes delays in the delivery of production batches and waste of time, since each manufactured batch has an estimated time of 1 h and 30 min for the dispersion and mix process. In this paper, we propose implementing an automated design for controlling both dispersion and mix process, based on automated tools and industrial control through PLCs, in order to standardize cycle times, improve manufacturing efficiency, and thus productivity.

The paper reports progress on an NSF-funded project whose goal is to research and develop multimodal affective animated pedagogical agents (APA) for different types of learners. Although the preponderance of research on APA tends to focus on the cognitive aspects of online learning, this project explores the less-studied role of affective features. More specifically, the objectives of the work are to: (1) research and develop novel algorithms for emotion recognition and for life-like emotion representation in embodied agents, which will be integrated in a new system for creating APA to be embedded in digital lessons;and (2) develop an empirically grounded research base that will guide the design of affective APA that are effective for different types of learners. This involves conducting a series of experiments to determine the effects of the agent's emotional style and emotional intelligence on a diverse population of students. The paper outlines the work conducted so far, e.g., development of a new system (and underlying algorithms) for producing affective APA. It also reports the findings from two preliminary studies.

The design of a better device for the measurement of thermal conductivity is described, which consists of systems such as: cooling system, heating system, cooling system, SCADA system, which for the measurement we will mix the advantages of stationary and transients, speeding up the measurement of this parameter achieved with stepped heating, this device specializes in the measurement of solid insulating materials, widely used in construction as cost reduction or alternative to the use of home heaters, samples can achieve weighing up to 12 kg, the ASTM C177-13 standard and those related to it were taken as a fundamental basis for the design of the device and the specimens to be measured, concluding that this design can perform measurements quickly, efficiently controlling the losses of the radiation and convection heat fluxes.

At present, virtual-reality industry is still in the early exploration period. Safety problems exists in various VR devices provided by mainstream manufactures due to the serious safety designing drawbacks. Therefore, some new safety laws are needed to reduce safety accidents. This research based on the safety behavioral science, systematically studied the safety issues in human machine interface, auditory alarm, and vision fields by behavior simulation and other methods, providing safety designing criterions for VR helmet game in family environment, as well as prototype support and reference for products upgrade to relevant manufactures.

Path planning is an important type of problem that occurs in various transportation related areas and has led to a several algorithms to solve it. In the current paper, we present a fast solution for path planning by optimizing the A* algorithm in grid-based maps with obstacles arranged to create rooms or as walls. We also optimize the behavior in narrow passages. Besides A* we use the Memory Efficient A* algorithm (MEA*) and improve it by changing the driving and searching behavior in narrow passages to find a faster way to the target location. The four considered variants of algorithms (original A* and MEA* algorithms and both with detection and special handling in narrow passages) are evaluated in computational experiments based on the number of steps (distance) required to reach the goal. These comparisons were performed on different types and sizes of maps. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
