This paper presents an alternative approach to measure impact, combining indexes that are already stablish to elicit objectives (Objective Key Results, known as OKRs) achievement, user satisfaction (Net Promoter Score;or NPS) and return of investment (social return of investment;SROI). Calculation plots the design in a 9-matrix grid, each one representing a level of impact and pointing ways of improvement. Besides presenting details of what we are calling Conceicao Moura Impact Index (CMII), we also share the results of the first pilot;an experiment conducted in a five-year-old project called iCANamy, and more specifically its program for teachers.

In this paper, a human–computer interface system using eye motion is implemented. In traditional methods, human–computer interfaces use keyboard, mouse as input devices. A hand-free interface between computer and human is represented in this paper. The system is developed using template matching and is a real time, fast and affordable technique for tracking facial features and eye gestures. The traditional computer screen pointing devices can be replaced by this technology, for the use of disabled people. The paper presents computer mouse cursor movement with human eyes. Wherever the eyesight focuses, accordingly the mouse is controlled. The proposed vision-based virtual interface controls the system by various eye movements such as eye blinking, winking of eye. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Executive functions are complex, high-level mental abilities associated with the frontal lobe brain function. These skills have been described as the inhibitory control ability, working memory, cognitive flexibility, planning, monitoring, among others. One of the most important skills of executive functioning is the ability to control behavior and cognition. Its adequate stimulation level is key to this process, highlighting the importance of generating motivational elements for the work and development of these mental skills, as proposed in the context of technological development. In this context, this article proposes a review of the main technological innovations that are currently available for stimulation.

This study aimed to understand the influence of various information acquisition strategies on foot proprioceptive and obstacle avoidance patterns among individuals with pigmentary retinal degeneration. Ten adult males (age: 39.2 +/- 7.9 years) with pigmentary retinal degeneration were recruited. Participants obtained obstacle information (height of obstacle: 4 cm, 12 cm, 20 cm) using four information acquisition strategies, namely: visual: straight view in front of the block (condition A), verbal: information about the height of the block (condition B), tactile: identifying the block by hand with no time limit (condition C), and a combination of verbal and tactile stimuli (condition D). They were further evaluated by the following tasks: task 1, participants reproduced the height of the obstacles by lifting their foot in a static standing posture after they recognized the height of the obstacles;task 2, After the participants acquired obstacle information in conditions A to D, they performed an obstacle step-over from a free position from where it was possible to finish the task with one step. In task 1, under conditions A and B, they showed higher toe rise and higher coefficient of variance in toe rise compared to that under conditions C and D. For task 2, the highest points of the leading and trailing feet while stepping over the obstacle were significantly higher in condition A. Our results showed that the tactile method was useful to improve the perception of the participants caused by the lack of visual information about the obstacle.

New technologies used for construction and upgrading formulate new research tasks. That is why the consideration of new solutions, methods and acquisition of new information in this respect is an important aspect which contributes to the progress of knowledge in this area. This paper applies to one of the issues, namely the assessment method of machinery technical safety. It presents the essential aspects related to legislation, risk assessment and analysis and selection of the risk reduction model. Solving of the problem is important because the difficulty occurring in the process results in ambiguous assessments and may generate additional hazards in the system, causing a reduction in the safety level. On the stage of assessment and reduction of the risks which occur in the mechatronic system, one can refer to the formal and legal area, which describes the harmonisation mechanism, but the relevant types and methods used for conducting a hazard analysis, as well as risk assessment tools, can be selected in any way, depending on the system safety engineer’s expertise. The authors recommend that a uniform assessment method of the machinery technical safety should be adopted, which will help to model cohesive virtual models developed for the needs of virtual technical commissioning. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Software developers commonly use open source libraries, known as "software dependencies", to build their applications to faster development of larger software applications. One way to track software dependencies is to use tools designed for just that purpose. Dependence vulnerability analyzers evaluate software dependency versions and compare them against lists of known vulnerabilities. This research will evaluate these tools by comparing the ease of installation and configuration, simplicity of keeping them up to date, readability of their reports, and ability to have them run automatically against a codebase. Finally, we will also compare the scan results of them.

Wireless sensor networks have become an emerging technology that is reshaping the industry 4.0. An exponential evolution with an enormous application in diverse areas such as aerospace engineering, healthcare, and smart farming. WSNs have also grown into a very hot area of interest. Therefore, several types of research have been conducted around the world interesting in energy efficiency, wireless communication, network lifetime, and scalability. Energy consumption is one of the most challenging areas in WSNs, with wireless propagation losses, limited power sources, and random sensor’s implementation, researchers during the last decade interested in developing new approaches serving for power consumption’s reduction and control. Clustering is one of several paradigms that are explored to manage power use and expand the network’s lifetime. In this paper, a multi-hop and dynamic k-medoids based algorithm for energy saving is proposed. The algorithm is using the elbow method for an optimized K parameter selection. The k-medoids clustering approach aims to reduce distances between cluster heads and relative cluster members at each round, for better communication’s management and an eventual optimization in the power dissipation during wireless transmission. The results of the proposed algorithm are compared to the results from Leach, Heed, and k-medoids. Extensive simulation runs shown an improvement of 30% compared to normal K-medoids in terms of first dead node and an improvement of 108% in terms of network lifetime. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Environmental sustainability is a key element of modern society. It has received global attention in recent years, both at scientific and administrative levels. Despite the scrupulous studies addressing this theme, many issues remain largely unresolved. A (big) data and AI approach is a promising alternative for tackling societal or environmental problems that are hard to grasp. We apply this approach to assess urban biodiversity. More specifically, the concept of intelligent beehives is introduced. This concept encapsulates and leverages biotic elements, such as harnessing bees as biomonitoring agents, with technologies like IoT instrumentation and AI. Together they comprise the data-driven services that shape the backbone of a real-time environmental dashboard. In this vision paper, our solution architecture and prototypization for such service-enabled beehives are sketched and discussed. We focus on the role of the IoT beehive network and open data for predictive modelling of biodiversity and argue how MLOps practices support a transformative process for creating awareness and maintaining or even increasing urban biodiversity. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper provides a comparative study between problems caused by cybersickness with users in virtual environments, and the studies on the influence of the optical aspects of the image via its levels of contrasts in the quality of the user experience in virtual environments. This article was organized in two parts, the first consists of surveying the results obtained in each research and the second has the objective of crossing these data and verifying the level of relationship between research on cybersickness and studies on the influence of optical aspects quality of the user experience. The results indicate relevant connection with the results of studies on cybersickness. With that, we conclude that in future research researchers can produce much more relevant results in the solution of persistent problems from the negative experience with virtual devices.
