One of the biggest problems in heterogeneous computing is how tasks should be mapped in these kinds of environments. Because this problem of mapping tasks has been shown to be NP-complete, it requires heuristic techniques. Therefore, we present new schedulers based on the apportionment methods used in elections. In order to obtain the performances of these schedulers we compare them with other known and used heuristics in many different parameters. The presented heuristics can be used when the tasks are big and when they can be divided in smaller sub-tasks. The comparison in this paper shows that these apportionment methods can cope well with the other methods when the number of tasks in the system is no bigger than a certain level. The new apportionment scheduler, based on Hamilton's method, copes well with the existing ones and it outperforms the other schedulers when some conditions are met.

A method for screening of company workplaces with high ergonomic risk is developed. For clustering of company workplaces a fuzzy modification of bat algorithm is proposed. Using data gathered by a checklist from workplaces, information for ergonomic related health risks is extracted. Three clusters of workplaces with low, moderate and high ergonomic risk are determined. Using these clusters, workplaces with moderate and high ergonomic risk levels are screened and relevant solutions are proposed. By a case study this method is illustrated and validated. Important advantages of the method are reduction of computational effort and fast screening of workplaces with major ergonomic problems within a company.

The research presented in this paper aims towards defining a novel governance oriented, layer of nodes for interaction between governmental data and data consumers, which aims to satisfy the need for a flexible and participative infrastructure for governing a modern society based on the rule-of-law and existing democratic conventions. We describe herein the Secure SQL Server - a system composed of a data format for describing complex rules of access to data stored in relational databases and a middleware server that mediates read/write interaction between clients and the database management system based on mentioned rules. Rather than designing a brand new protocol for this citizen-to-government interaction, we make use of existing well-supported standards, namely SQL, XML, XAdES and HTTP to model a system that fully complies with legal requirements of modern governments and which allows both read and write access to governmental data based on complex rules applied at run-time.

In this paper, we present a collaborative multi-agent based system for mining association rules from distributed databases. The proposed model is based on cooperative agents and is compliant to the Foundation for intelligent Physical Agents standard. This model combines different types of technologies, namely the association rules as a data mining technique and the multi-agent systems to build a model that can operate on distributed databases rather than working on a centralized database only. The autonomous and the social abilities of the model agents provided the ability to operate cooperatively with each other and with other different external agents, thus offering a generic platform and a basic infrastructure that can deal with other data mining techniques. The platform has been compared with the traditional association rules algorithms and has proved to be more efficient and more scalable.

In this paper, a strict authentication watermarking scheme based on multi-modal biometric images and near sets was designed and introduced. The proposed scheme has a number of stages including feature enrolment for extracting the human facial features. Three human facial features which are nose length, nose width and distance between eyes balls are extracted. The near sets approach is adapted to choose the best feature among the considered features. The watermark is generated from hashing the extracted facial features that then encrypted using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) technique and embedding the encrypted value into the human fingerprint image in order to confirm the integrity of respective biometric data. The experimental result shows that the proposed scheme guarantees the security assurance.

We consider an extension of the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) to multi-level (or multi-mode) activities. Each activity must be allocated exactly one unit of each required resource and the resource unit may be used at any of its specified levels. The processing time of an activity is given by the maximum of the durations that would result from a specific allocation of resources. The objective is to find the optimal solution that minimizes the overall project cost which includes a penalty for tardiness beyond the specified delivery date as well as a bonus for early delivery. We give some of the most important solution details and we report on the preliminary results obtained. The implementation was designed using the C# language.

There is an increasing need for usable tools to support knowledge elicitation, formalization and management. As an answer to this need, this paper describes fully integrated semantic web framework experiences, where users can represent and manage their data in a visual way, without the need of semantic web experts as intermediaries. These frameworks typically incorporate an ontology editor, a resource editor, reasoning capabilities and intuitive interaction and visualization facilities. The use of effective visualization techniques to graphically represent ontologies is investigated and the Easy Onto prototype is presented. In addition, different semantic web frameworks have been implemented as a result of research projects in different domains. In particular this paper presents the IRCS framework, an intelligentsoftware to semantically index, search, and navigate the documentation used in water management plants, and the AWI environment, a collaborative environment aiming to collect and share knowledge of user communities, within the context of a digital factory.

Monitoring and tracking of elderly people using vision algorithms is an strategy gaining relevance to detect anomalous and potentially dangerous situations and react immediately. In general vision algorithms for monitoring and tracking are very costly and take a lot of time to respond, which is highly inconvenient since many applications can require action to be taken in real time. A multi-agent system (MAS) can establish a social model to automate the tasks carried out by the human experts during the process of analyzing images obtained by cameras. This study presents a detector agent integrated in a MAS that can process stereoscopic images to detect and classify situations and states of elderly people in geriatric residences by combining a series of novel techniques. We will talk in details about the combination of techniques used to perform the detection process, subdivided into human detection, human tracking,and human behavior understanding, and where there is a case-based reasoning (CBR) model that allows the system to add reasoning capabilities.
