This paper describes a framework for prototyping and evaluation of techniques by which, machine learning can be brought into the realm of mobile augmented reality and location aware applications in general. Two realistic scenarios will be presented and considerations for the inclusion of particular recommendation techniques will be discussed. The results of our exploratory evaluation have pointed out that the framework could be used in evaluating similar adaptable augmented reality systems and location aware mobile applications using it as a building block for future exploration.

This paper presents a geographically distributed mobile teamwork management system that combines the simplicity of Web services architecture and protocols, with the GPS-based location information retrieval, and a geographical mapping application. Sometimes, the soil foundation is inadequate for constructions purpose (soft-soils). In these cases there is need to improve its mechanical and physical properties. For this purpose, there are several geotechnical techniques where Jet Grouting (JG) is highlighted. In many geotechnical structures, advance design incorporates the ultimate limit state (ULS) and the serviceability limit state (SLS) design criteria, for which uniaxial compressive strength and deformability properties of the improved soils are needed. In this paper, three Data Mining models, i.e. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Functional Networks (FN), were used to estimate the tangent elastic Young modulus at 50% of the maximum stress applied (E-tg50%) of JG laboratory formulations over time. A sensitivity analysis procedure was also applied in order to understand the influence of each parameter in E-tg50% estimation. It is shown that the data driven model is able to learn the complex relationship between E-tg50% and its contributing factors. The obtained results, namely the relative importance of each parameter, were compared with the predictive models of elastic Young modulus at very small strain (E-0) as well as the uniaxial compressive strength (Q(u)). The obtained results can help to understand the behavior of soil-cement mixtures over time and reduce the costs with laboratory formulations.

Molecular replicators were introduced as a possible theory to explain the origin of life. Since their proposal they have been extensively studied from a bio- chemical perspective. This work proposes a taxonomy for the main properties of replicators that are important for building computational tools to solve complex problems as well as introduces a computer algorithm that models these entities. The simulation of this algorithm allows the observation and analysis of the behavior of replicators in light of the properties introduced. A number of experiments are performed to show that the proposed taxonomy of properties can be observed by simulating the algorithm introduced.

In this paper, we present an approach to automatically allocate a set of exploration tasks between a fleet of mobile robots. Our approach combines a Road Map technique and Markovian Decision Processes (MDPs). We are interested in the problem of exploring an area where several robots need to visit a set of points of interest. This problem induces a long term horizon motion planning with a combinatorial explosion. The Road Map allows us to represent spatial knowledge as a graph of paths. It can be modified during the exploration mission requiring the robots to use on-line computation. By decomposing the Road Map into regions, an MDP allows the leader robot to evaluate the interest of each robot in every single region. Using those values, the leader can assign the exploration tasks to the robots.

The performance of collaborative filtering recommender systems can suffer when data is sparse, for example in distributed situations. In addition popular algorithms such as memory-based collaborative filtering are rather ad-hoc, making principled improvements difficult. In this paper we focus on a simple recommender based on naive Bayesian techniques, and explore two different methods of modelling probabilities. We find that a Gaussian model for rating behaviour works well, and with the addition of a Gaussian-Gamma prior it maintains good performance even when data is sparse.

Games have been an important activity among people for many years, but it has never been as interesting to explore as it is today. The main aim of our work is to investigate the influence of mobile phone games on collaboration and social interaction of physically co-located players, instead of focusing on the consequences of playing digital games that are antisocial in nature. Considering the performances of the contemporary converged mobile phones, we have developed and augmented reality (AR) TeamTwixT game for mobile phones. We have evaluated the system performances, user interface performances by adopting the Fitts' law and the usability of mobile phones for collaborative AR. The results have shown that, despite the small screen and limited input capabilities mobile phones and 3D AR technology can be used to naturally enhance collaboration of co-located players and increase their confidence in respect to other gaming conditions.
