Geophysical inversion is an ill-posed problem, resolved partially mostly in 2D or with specific constrains. We analyze the convergence of iterative 3D gravity inversion based in the idea of the CLEAR algorithm in both cases of sequential and parallel processing, focusing in the time and number of iterations depending in number of discretization nodes and number of processors involved. Variations of calculation runtime and number of iterations depending on the size of the model indicate the usefulness of parallel processing for large models of 3D geophysical inversion with simple algorithms. The work is done for the FP7 project HP-SEE.

Bottlenecks, as the key ingredients for improving the performances of the production networks, have been profoundly studied. However, the major definitions of bottlenecks are derived in terms of the throughput and based on the theory of constraints (TOC). Moreover, before the specific measures can be applied on them, it is not straightforward to localise dynamic bottlenecks due to their complex dynamic characteristics. Distinguishing from the traditional view at the bottlenecks, this article therefore develops a systematic and comprehensive definition of dynamic bottlenecks of the production networks based on both the TOC and the bottleneck-oriented logistic analysis. Afterwards, the defined dynamic bottlenecks are modelled by means of discrete simulation using practical data, aiming at visualising them in the production network. By applying the logistic operating curves, the practical application of the proposed research and its procedures is discussed as well.

MEMS research has until recently focused mainly on the engineering process, resulting in interesting products and a growing market. To fully realize the promise of MEMS, the next step is to add embedded intelligence. With embedded intelligence, the scalability of manufacturing will enable distributed MEMS systems consisting of thousands or millions of units which can work together to achieve a common goal. However, before such systems can become a reallity, we must come to grips with the challenge of scalability which will require paradigm-shifts both in hardware and software. Furthermore, the need for coordinated actuation, programming, communication and mobility management raises new challenges in both control and programming. The objective of this article is to report the progresses made by taking the example of two research projects and by giving the remaining challenges and the perspectives of distributed intelligent MEMS.

Amplify-and-forward method with fixed gain relays is one of the most attractive cooperative scheme due to its low complexity. In this paper, we propose a new relaying scheme, called the on-off relaying, where the relay is utilized only if the quality of the direct link between the source and the destination is lower then the relayed link. For this scheme, we present asymptotic performance analysis for the outage probability and average error probability for high SNRs. Monte Carlo simulations are used to verify these results.

The recent advent of high throughput methods has generated large amounts of protein-protein interaction network (PPIN) data. When studying the workings of a biological cell, it is useful to be able to detect known and predict still undiscovered protein complexes within the cell's PPINs. Such predictions may be used as an inexpensive tool to direct biological experiments. Because of its importance in the studies of protein interaction network, there are different models and algorithms in identifying functional modules in PPINs. In this paper, we present two representative methods, focusing on the comparison of their clustering properties in PPIN and their contribution towards function prediction. The work is done with PPIN data from the bakers' yeast (Saccaromyces cerevisiae) and since the network is noisy and still incomplete, we use pre-processing and purifying. As a conclusion new progress and future research directions are discussed.

Wind energy prediction has an important part to play in a smart energy grid for load balancing and capacity planning. In this paper we explore, if wind measurements based on the existing infrastructure of windmills in neighbored wind parks can be learned with a softcomputing approach for wind energy prediction in the ten-minute to six-hour range. For this sake we employ Support Vector Regression (SVR) for time series forecasting, and run experimental analyses on real-world wind data from the NREL western wind resource dataset. In the experimental part of the paper we concentrate on loss function parameterization of SVR. We try to answer how far ahead a reliable wind forecast is possible, and how much information from the past is necessary. We demonstrate the capabilities of SVR-based wind energy forecast on the micro-scale level of one wind grid point, and on the larger scale of a whole wind park.

In complex systems, multiple aspects interact and influence each other. A vast number of entities are present in the system. Traditional modeling and simulation techniques fail to capture interactions between loosely coupled aspects of a complex distributed system. The objective of this work is to extend a Ho ionic methodology by using a formal specification language based on two formalisms: Generalized Stochastic Petri Net (GSPN) and Z language. Such a specification style facilitates the modeling of organizations and the interactions between them with both reactive and functional aspects. We illustrate the suitability of our generic approach by applying it to a Distributed Industrial Maintenance Company.

Using variational and perturbative methods we investigate the dynamics of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate whose effective nonlinearity is harmonically modulated. We derive analytic formulae for the period of Faraday waves in low- and high-density, longitudinally-homogeneous condensates. Using the Poincare-Lindstedt analysis, we also analytically calculate frequency shifts of collective oscillation modes of spherically and axially-symmetric condensates due to the harmonic driving of the interaction.

Managing large medical image collections is an increasingly demanding important issue in many hospitals and other medical settings. A huge amount of this information is daily generated, which requires robust and agile systems. In this paper we present a distributed multi-agent system capable of managing very large medical image datasets. In this approach, agents extract low-level information from images and store them in a data structure implemented in a relational database. The data structure can also store semantic information related to images and particular regions. A distinctive aspect of our work is that a single image can be divided so that the resultant sub-images can be stored and managed separately by different agents to improve performance in data accessing and processing. The system also offers the possibility of applying some region-based operations and filters on images, facilitating image classification. These operations can be performed directly on data structures in the database.
