Advanced traffic information systems can assist drivers in reducing their travel times by making better use of available road capacity. In assessing their practical applicability, however, it is important to assess the overhead that various advanced traffic information systems bring. This paper evaluates the communication overhead for a decentralized, delegate multi-agent systems based advanced traffic information system, and for a centralized system. We document the relationship between the communication overhead and travel time reduction for both systems. This analysis can help weighing both factors when designing a practical traffic information system in a real-world scenario.

Medical applications of rapid manufacturing are being used to develop and manufacture medical devices and instrumentation. One important point of this process is the design that can be helped via 3D modeling. Using digitalized patient data, this process of modeling can improve the customization process. This paper provides a new methodology for the customization process of a tracheal stent.

Automatic Image annotation is the process of assigning meaningful words to an image taking into account its content. This process is of great interest as it allows indexing, retrieving, and understanding of large collections of image data. This paper presents an original image annotation system used in the medical domain. The annotation model used was inspired from the principles defined for Cross Media Relevance Model. The ontology used by the annotation process was created in an original manner starting from the information content provided by the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).

The intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) have been used daily to support education in various domains. For this reason, fast and easy construction of ITSs are fundamental requirements. In this sense, a software Product Line has been used accordingly for building intelligent Tutoring System families. However, the construction of such family systems is still a hard and complex task which involves the representation and manipulation of different knowledge sources with distinct artifacts. To alleviate these issues, this paper proposes an ontology-based model for driving the building of software product lines in an ITS Context. It also provides a case study describing the construction of an ITS in the programming domain. In addition, an evaluation is presented aiming to show the feasibility of the proposed model. The main conclusion is that this model reduces the effort and the complexity in the construction of such systems.

This article describes the main components of the multiagent model and the tool we are designing in order to analyze the structure and the dynamics of an historical social network from the Middle Age. This social network has been built through the discovery of many notarized documents and first studied according to a mathematical approach. Using a customizable multiagent system to simulate the network's evolution and Markov chain calculus to adjust behavioral parameters, we propose a method to assess behaviors' importance and effects on the global network's evolution. From a historical point of view, this multiagent model also aims at explaining this network's dynamics during some specific periods such as the Hundred Year's War where numerous notarized documents disappeared.

Risk assessment is an important topic for financial institution nowadays, especially in the context of loan applications. Some of these institutions have already implemented their own credit scoring mechanisms to evaluate their clients' risk and decide based in this indicator. In fact, the information gathered by financial institutions constitutes a valuable source of data for the creation of information assets from which credit scoring mechanisms can be developed. The purpose of this paper is to, from information assets, create a decision mechanism that is able to evaluate a client's risk. Furthermore, upon this decision mechanism, a suggestive algorithm is presented to better explain and give insights on how the decision mechanism values attributes.

Biofeedback has been identified to improve postural control and stability. A biofeedback system communicates with the humans' Central Nervous System through many available modalities, such as vibrotactile. The vibrotactile nature of feedback is presented in a simple and realistic manner, making the presentation of signals safe and easy to decipher. This work presents a wobble board training routine for rehabilitation combined with real-time biofeedback. The biofeedback was stimulated using a fuzzy inference system. The fuzzy system had two inputs and one output. Measurements to test this rehabilitation approach was taken in Eyes Open and Eyes Close states, with and without biofeedback while subjects stood on the wobble board. An independent T-test was conducted on the readings obtained to test for statistical significance. The goal of this work was to determine the feasibility of implementing a negative close-loop biofeedback system to assist in proprioceptor training utilizing wobble boards.

This paper presents the work done during the first year of the EPIS project. This project deals with the process of conducting multiple and parallel multi agents-based simulations (MABS) on a cluster or a grid in order to generate sufficient data for scientific use (e.g. in the case of a sensibility analysis of a simulation). We provide a new, general and user-friendly approach to marry MABS and High-Performance computing (HPC). We, thus, propose a workflow and an associated HPC infrastructure. These two permit to easily deploy a lot of simulations on a cluster without any prior parallelizing work. The method wants to be as generic as possible: no particular MABS targeted, no overhead and HPC compliance work has to be done only once. Moreover the user is guided by a web interface that handles the workflow.

In this work, it is described a gait multiobjective optimization system that allows to obtain fast but stable robot quadruped crawl gaits. We combine bio-inspired Central Patterns Generators (CPGs) and Genetic Algorithms (GA). A motion architecture based on CPGs oscillators is used to model the locomotion of the robot dog and a GA is used to search parameterizations of the CPGs parameters which minimize the body vibration, maximize the velocity and maximize the wide stability margin. In this problem, there are several conflicting objectives that leads to a multiobjective formulation that is solved using the Weighted Tchebycheff scalarization method. Several experimental results show the effectiveness of this proposed approach.

Many problems can be formulated as optimisation problems. Among the many classes of algorithms for solving such problems, one interesting, biologically inspired group is that of evolutionary optimisation techniques. In this tutorial paper we provide an overview of such techniques, in particular of Genetic Algorithms and Genetic Programming and its related subtasks of selection, crossover, mutation, and coding. We then also explore Ant Colony Optimisation and Particle Swarm Optimisation techniques.
