The development of intelligent Environments is a complex challenge. This complexity arises, in part, from the amount of different devices that need to be seamlessly integrated in a common and homogeneous environment, despite the fact of each device having its own characteristics. This heterogeneity of devices is particularly risky when one passes from the specification to the implementation phase, where all unexpected things start to happen. Multi-agent systems are the paradigm par excellence for implementing intelligent Environments. However, traditionally, agents are only used at the implementation phase. In this paper we propose a new 3 step approach in which agents are used during all the development process, playing undoubtedly a much more preponderant role and making the path from the specification to the implementation a much easier and controllable one, always having in mind the challenges of the development of intelligent Environments.

New products often evolve from past and existing products. This evolution largely defines the enterprise competitiveness in terms of the speed, quality and cost. Those design features that have proven successful or "fit" will survive and therefore be inherited by the new products, forming what is usually called a product "platform" and in turn providing a basis for mass customization (MC). This approach to new product development is generally termed as "Platform Product Development". Whether or not an enterprise is able to capitalize on the concept of product platforms is vital to its business survival and growth. Whilst the approach has been widely appreciated and practiced with success in several industrial sectors, its industrial practice has remained as an art, heavily dependent on the experience and skills of individual designers and managers. Researchers and management consultants have been working on platform leveraging strategies at the strategic level, and guidelines for better structuring the approach to facilitate its adoption and implementation. This research project recognizes an equal need for scientific decision supports at the tactical level for design practitioners and managers to address fundamental questions such as (A) how a platform should be established for a family of products in a given industrial and market context, and (B) how a product development team chooses and then customizes the most appropriate product platform to meet the customer requirements from a specific market segment with particular manufacturing resources and supply bases. This paper is to describe a scientific and effective decision - Genetic Algorithm to assist product development practitioners and managers with major decision activities in the process of platform product development under several focus areas.

Animated virtual crowds have been used last years for analyzing human factors in scenarios where masses of people gather. A typical example is building evacuation in case of tire. Scalability still remains as an open issue for these multiagent systems applications. In this paper, we use a scalable architecture to simulate a large-scale version of a virtual crowd in a building evacuation. From the social point of view, the results provided by the large-scale version of the crowd add new and crucial information about the agents behavior, emphasizing the need for a small amount of trained leaders in order to save lives. From the system point of view, the results show that the trend of avatars towards crowding in some areas highly increases the computation time for the agents hosted in some client computers. Therefore, this trend should be taken into account when designing large-scale evacuation Simulations.

This paper presents an improved version of a multiagent architecture aimed at providing solutions for monitoring the interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean. The ocean surface and the atmosphere exchange carbon dioxide. This process is can be modeled by a multiagent system with advanced learning and adaption capabilities. The proposed multiagent architecture incorporates CBR-agents. The CBR-agents proposed in this paper integrate novel strategies that both monitor the parameters that affect the interaction, and facilitate the creation of models. The system was tested and this paper presents the results obtained.

In this paper, a legal approach to Ambient Assisted Living is considered. A general framework for context-aware applications is presented and a general view of legal principles to be considered in this framework. The analysis of a specific application of AAL, developed in a previous work, allows understanding these principles in a real development and the applicability for designing AAL applications.

GRAI Methodology is one of the three main methodologies for enterprise modeling (with PERA and CIMOSA). To support this methodology different tools are being developed. GRAIXPERT is a hybrid expert system for detecting inconsistencies in enterprises. GRAISUC is a module for choosing and implementing supply chain management tool in enterprises. GRAIQUAL is a module for improving quality system of enterprises. These modules are based on the use of different reasoning (Case-based reasoning (CBR), decomposition, transformation) but also on the enterprise knowledge management. The enterprise knowledge could be explicit or tacit. Each case of enterprise studied allows to improve the knowledge of the tool. Then, Multi-agent systems are used for acquiring this knowledge and managing improvement. This paper presents how Multi-agent system could be associated to CBR and Decomposition reasoning in order to be more efficient during the enterprise modelling.

The following paper introduces a very interesting and quite common problem of dealing with high demand variance. The company, in which the problem was identified, is of automotive industry and it produces elements of vehicles interior furnishing. The flows of materials and information in the company are presented and discussed and kanbans used to manage the flows are introduced. The solution of the problem is presented, as well as its model based on multi-agent model. The model is to be used in simulation testing efficiency of solution suggested in dynamic environment.

A case of middleware for agents that work in mobility scenario is explained in this paper. Using this middleware the agents achieve an intelligent management of the communication infrastructure. The principles of operation of the middleware are inspired in the ubiquitous computing paradigm. Specifically, a design of a middleware is described in this work, permitting a proper integration of mobile agents in the corporative information system. In this context, the concept of proper integration means that all the information that is related with the mobile agents operations is available at the moment, and in the required amount by all the processes of the information system of the organization.

Scheduling is one of the core steps to efficiently exploit the capabilities of heterogeneous distributed computing systems and is an NP-complete problem. Therefore using meta-heuristic algorithms is a suitable approach in order to cope with its difficulty. In this paper we apply an efficient meta-heuristic method, the differential evolution, to the independent tasks scheduling problem and compare its efficiency with other popular methods for minimizing makespan and flowtime in heterogeneous distributed computing systems.

In this paper we present an extensive and practical analysis of Multi-agent learning strategies using our open simulator SinCity 2.0. Sin City has been developed in Net Logo and it can be considered as an extension of the simple predator-prey pursuit problem. In our case, the predators are substituted by police cars, the prey by a thief and the chase is performed in an urban grid environment. Sin City allows to model, in a graphical friendly environment, different strategies for both the police and the thief, also implying coordination and communication among the agent set. We build this model, introducing traffic and more agent's behaviors to have a more realistic and complex scenario. We also present the results of multiple experiments performed, comparing some classical learning strategies and their performance.
