This book constitutes the proceedings of the second International Workshop on Advanced Computational Intelligence (IWACI2009), with a sequel of IWACI 2008 successfully held in Macao, China. IWACI2009 provided a high-level international forum for scientists, engineers, and educators to present state-of-the-art research in computational intelligence and related fields.

An optimized multilevel sigmoidal (OptiMUSIG) activation function for segmentation of multilevel images is presented. The OptiMUSIG activation function is generated from the optimized class boundaries of input images. Results of application of the function with fixed and variable thresholding mechanisms are demonstrated on two real life images. The proposed OptiMUSIG activation function is found to outperform the conventional MUSIG activation function using both fixed and variable thresholds.

Recently, there has been a great interest in the development of protocols and data management techniques for vehicular networks (VANETs). In a VANET, the vehicles form a wireless ad hoc network where different types of useful data can be exchanged by using the dynamic links that a vehicle can establish with its neighboring vehicles. While this offers opportunities to develop useful applications, many research challenges arise from the point of view of data management. In this paper, we propose the use of cars equipped with sensors in a VANET for environment monitoring. Our approach is based on mobile agents, which jump from car to car as necessary to reach the area of interest and keep themselves in that area. Thus, relying on an expensive fixed infrastructure of sensors is avoided. Instead, any area can be monitored with low cost as long as there are enough vehicles traversing it. We present experiments that compare different traveling strategies for the agents.

We present a framework that allows two self-motivated distributed agents to perform, in an efficient way, negotiations aiming at achieving mutually satisfactory agreements. when privacy of information is an issue, and no central authority could be used. In particular, each agent has her own constraints to satisfy, as well as her own utility function. Such issues are kept private, and cannot be disclosed to the counterpart. Negotiation is hence carried out by exchanging proposals and by performing sophisticated forms of reasoning on the remote agent's offers, by trying to infer some characteristics of the counterpart, in order to achieve efficient process convergence.

The paper presents an interactive training and evaluation system designed for the evidence-based medicine (EBM) training of Romanian undergraduate students. Fourteen tutorials and a series of supplementary materials were developed and integrated into a virtual self-directed training environment in order to provide the opportunity to learn about and to assess evidence-based medicine knowledge and skills. The interactive web-based approach was efficient and effective in the EBM education of undergraduate students, suggesting that it could be the appropriate method of teaching the evidence-based medicine.

Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) has been received increasing attention due to its simplicity and reasonable convergence speed surpassing genetic algorithm in some circumstances. In order to improve convergence speed or to augment the exploration area within the solution space to find a better optimum point, many modifications have been proposed. One of such modifications is to fuse PSO with other search strategies such as Simulated Annealing (SA) in order to make a new hybrid algorithm -so called SAPSO. To the best of the authors' knowledge, in the earlier studies in terms of SAPSO, the researchers either assigned an inertia factor or a global temperature to particles decreasing in the each iteration globally. In this study the authors proposed a local temperature, to be assigned to the each particle, and execute SAPSO with locally allocated temperature. The proposed model is called SUPER-SAPSO because it often surpasses the previous SAPSO model and standard PSO appropriately. Simulation results on different benchmark functions demonstrate superiority of the proposed model in terms of convergence speed as well as optimisation accuracy.

New interfaces for CAD applications are coming up due to new available devices endowed with alternate technology. The use of this kind of interfaces is not extended at all because of the lack of robustness and reliability in recognition and interpretation of user inputs. In this work we develop a first approach of an interpreter of user sketches suitable for working online in CAD environments. An agent based architecture for the recogniser is presented. The recognition process uses invariant descriptors as the fast Fourier transform of the radius and arc length versus cumulative turning angle signatures, the HU moments and other invariant shape factors. The final classification is carried out by statistical learning using non-linear discriminant analysis. The method proposed in this article is not dependent on the number of strokes, neither on the sketching sequence order powered by the user. Finally, a validation of the recogniser is done.

The problem that we will address here is the Super-Peer Selection Problem (SPSP). Two hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) approaches are proposed for solving this NP-hard problem. The new encoding schemes are implemented with appropriate objective functions. Both approaches keep the feasibility of individuals by using specific representation and modified genetic operators. The numerical experiments were carried out on the standard data set known from the literature. The results of this test show that in 6 out of 12 cases HGAs outreached best known solutions so far, and that our methods are competitive with other heuristics.

Virtual Organizations are a suitable mechanism for enabling coordination of heterogeneous agents in open environments. Taking into account many concepts of the Human Organization Theory, a model for Virtual Organizations has been developed. This model describes the structural, functional, normative and environmental aspects of the system. It is based on four main concepts: organizational unit, service, norm and environment.. All these concepts have been applied in a case-study example for the management of a travel agency system.
