This paper proposes a novel interactive scheme to incorporate user preferences into evolutionary multiobjective optimization. The approach combines an evolutionary algorithm with an instance based supervised online learning scheme for user preference modeling. The user is queried to compare pairs of prototype solutions in terms of comparability and quality. The user decisions form a preference model which induces a ranking on the population. The model acts as a critic in the selection among non-dominated solutions on behalf of the expert. The user preference is extrapolated from a minimal number of pairwise comparisons to minimize the burden of interactive expert decisions. The preference model includes the concept of comparability to allow simultaneous convergence to multiple disconnected regions of the Pareto front. The preference model comprehends the specific preference scenarios of scalar optimization, goal oriented scenarios, ranking of criteria and global approximation of the Pareto front. It thus represents a general scheme for interactive optimization that does not depend on prior assumptions on either the problem or user preference structure.

This paper presents an expanded role for context in agent communities. We propose a multi-tiered approach in which the contextual information is segregated and encapsulated in three different contextual levels, namely Local. Focal. and Zonal. Each level contains specific kinds of contextual information, thereby pruning the search space and making the process of reasoning about context more manageable. These levels can be thought of as super-contexts within which each of the subordinate contexts become potentially valid. Such a multi-tiered approach helps organize. manage. select, and maintain the large amount of contextual information required by future multi-agent systems.

A new model is proposed. in the context of Axelrod's model for the study of cultural dissemination, to include and external vector field (VF) which describes the effects of mass media on social systems. The VF acts over the whole system and it is characterized by two parameters: a non-null overlap with each agent in the society and a confidence value of its information. Beyond a threshold value of the confidence there is induced monocultural globalization of the system lined up with the VF Below this value, the Multicultural states are unstable and certain homogenization of the system is obtained in opposite line up according to that we have called negative publicity, effect. Three regimes of behavior for the spread process of the VF information as a function of time are reported.

This paper presents CROS, a contingency response multi-agent system for oil spills situations. ne system makes use of a Case-Based Reasoning system which generates predictions to determine the probability of finding oil slicks in certain areas of the ocean. CBR uses past information to generate new solutions to the current problem. The system employs a distributed multi-agent architecture so that the main components of the system can be accessed remotely. Therefore, all functionalities can communicate in a distributed way, even from mobile devices. The core of the system is a group of deliberative agents acting as controllers and administrators for all functionalities. The system has been used to predict real oil spill situations. Results have demonstrated that the system can accurately predict the presence of oil slicks in determined zones. It has been demonstrated that using a distributed architecture can enhance the overall performance of the system.

Balancing the load of the computational nodes is one important problem in the management of distributed computing, specifically collaborative and environments. Some models were developed to deal with this problem. Most of them have in common a lack of ability to learn from previous experience in order to make predictions about future collaborations in the environment. Therefore improving the way in which equilibrium/balance is done, and to optimize efforts, resources, and time spent. This paper presents CoB-ForeSeer (Cooperation Behavior Foreseer), a new learning strategy proposal to solve the particular problem presented above. This strategy is based on neural network technology. specifically on Radial Based Function Network (RBFN). The paper also presents the way in which this learning strategy is properly configured and its corresponding evaluation. Results show that CoB-ForeSeer can successfully learn (because it reaches an acceptable average error) previous cooperation in the grid, and use this knowledge to improve new scenarios where collaboration is needed.

This book is the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Fuzzy Information and Engineering (ICFIE 2009) held in the famous mountain city Chongqing in Southwestern China, from September 26-29, 2009. Only high-quality papers are included. The ICFIE 2009, built on the success of previous conferences, the ICFIE 2007 (Guangzhou, China), is a major symposium for scientists, engineers and practitioners in the world to present their updated results, ideas, developments and applications in all areas of fuzzy information and engineering. It aims to strengthen relations between industry research laboratories and universities, and to create a primary symposium for world scientists in fuzzy fields as follows: Fuzzy Information; Fuzzy Sets and Systems; softcomputing; Fuzzy Engineering; Fuzzy Operation Research and Management; Artificial Intelligence; Fuzzy Mathematics and Systems in Applications, etc.

For the last decades, as the computer technology has been developing, the importance of human-computer systems interaction problems was growing. This is not only because the computer systems performance characteristics have been im-proved but also due to the growing number of computer users and of their expectations about general computer systems capabilities as universal tools for human work and life facilitation. The early technological problems of man-computer information exchange which led to a progress in computer programming languages and input/output devices construction have been step by step dominated by the more general ones of human interaction with-and-through computer systems, shortly denoted as H-CSI problems. The interest of scientists and of any sort specialists to the H-CSI problems is very high as it follows from an increasing number of scientific conferences and publications devoted to these topics. The present book contains selected papers concerning various aspects of H-CSI. They have been grouped into five Parts: I. General H-CSI problems (7 papers), II. Disabled persons helping and medical H-CSI applications (9 papers), III. Psychological and linguistic H-CSI aspects (9 papers), IV. Robots and training systems (8 papers), V. Various H-CSI applications (11 papers).

Electronic tongues are bioinspired systems that employ an array of sensors for analysis, recognition or identification of chemical species in liquids. This work presents the use of a Wavelet Neural Network (WNN) with multiple outputs to model a multianalyte quantification from a highly complex sensor signal. In this case, WNN accomplishes data reduction, feature extraction and modeling. WNN is implemented with a feedforward multilayer perceptron architecture, whose activation functions in its hidden layer neurons are wavelet functions, in our case, the first derivative of a Gaussian function. The neural network is trained using a back-propagation algorithm, adjusting the connection weights along with the wavelet parameters. The principle is applied to the simultaneous quantification of heavy metals present in a solution. Lead, Cadmium and Copper were therefore accurately determined in the 0.01-0.1 ppm range in presence of Thallium and Indium with no need elimination of dissolved oxygen, as it is normally required in the standard chemical laboratory.

Modeling man-machine interaction based on human conversation can provide flexible and effective user interfaces. Conversational interfaces would provide the opportunity for the user to interact with the computer just as they would do to a real person. In this paper, we introduce a formal model of dialogue that may contribute to the building of better man-machine interfaces.

Production systems need information in real time to deal with diagnosis of problems and decision taking. For that, accuracy, processing agility, and mainly agility in managing information, is necessary. Those characteristics are found in the approach of the Multi Agents System. Processes Staggering is a complex task, which depends on many variables and demands real time in a satisfactory solution where the search space is extremely complex and, thus, Genetic Algorithms techniques can help to solve these situations. This article presents a case study where a hybrid modeling for the implementation of a process staggering system in a production system.
