In this paper, a Pareto-based multi-objective optimization algorithm using Comprehensive Learning Particle Swarm Optimization (CLPSO) is proposed for expansion planning of electrical distribution networks. The two conflicting objectives are: installation and operational cost, and fault/failure cost. A novel cost-biased particle encoding/decoding scheme, along with heuristics-based conductor size selection, for CLPSO is proposed to obtain optimum network topology. Simultaneous optimization of network topology, reserve-branch installation and conductor sizes are the key features of the proposed algorithm. A set of non-dominated solutions, capable of providing the utility with enough design choices, can be obtained by this planning algorithm. Results on a practical power system are presented along with statistical hypothesis tests to validate the proposed algorithm.

This paper addresses the problem of facial feature detection and tracking in real-time using a single active camera. The variable parameters of the camera (i.e. pan, tilt and zoom) are changed adaptively to track the face of the agent in successive frames and detect the facial features which may be used for facial expression analysis for surveillance or mesh generation for animation purposes, at a later stage. Our tracking procedure assumes planar motion of the face. It also detects invalid feature points i.e. those feature points which do not correspond to actual facial features, but are outliers. They are subsequently abandoned by our procedure in order to extract 'high level' information from the face for facial mesh generation or emotion recognition which might be helpful for Video Surveillance purposes. The only limitation on the performance of the procedure is imposed by the maximum pan/tilt range of the camera.

The strategy for the classification and detection of SQL injection attacks uses a combination based on detection by anomalies and misuses. The past decade has seen a tremendous growth in the amount of experimental and computational biomedical data, specifically in the areas of genomics and proteomics. In this context, the immense volume of data resulting from DNA microarray experiment presents a major data analysis challenge. Current methods for genome-wide analysis of expression data typically rely on biologically relevant gene sets instead of individual genes. This has translated into a need for sophisticated tools to mine, integrate and prioritize massive amounts of information. In this work we report the development of a multiagent architecture that gives support to the construction of gene sets coming from multiple heterogeneous data sources. The proposed architecture is the base of a publicly available web portal in which final users are able to extract lists of genes from Multiple heterogeneous data sources.

We define our empathy learning problem as determining the extent by which a system can perceive user affect and intention as well as ambient context, construct models of these perceptions and of its interaction behavior with the user, and incrementally improve on its own its models in order to effectively provide empathic responses that change the ambient context. In concept, system self-improvement can be viewed as changing its internal assumptions, programs or hardware. In a practical sense, we view this as rooting from a data-centric approach, i.e., the system learns its assumptions from recorded interaction data, and extending to growth-centric, i.e., such knowledge should be dynamically and continuously refined through subsequent interaction experiences as the system learns from new data. To demonstrate this, we return to the fundamental concept of affect modeling to show the data-centric nature of the problem and suggest how to move towards engaging the growth-centric. Lastly, given that an empathic system that is ambient intelligent has yet to be explored, and that most ambient intelligent systems are not affective let alone empathic, we submit for consideration our initial ideas on an empathic ambient intelligence in human-system interaction.

This paper proposes the materialization of a complete argumentation system ready to be built in conventional agent software platforms. In particular, an example for the Jadex agent platform is shown. The platform uses the BDI (Belief, Desire, Intention) model of agency. The main goal of this work is to foster usability of argumentation frameworks. The approach followed here to achieve it is the proposal of a formal representation for the dialogs that can occur, a specification of how to build the application domain model (i.e. the universe of discourse) and the necessary guidelines to manage these elements when building BDI agents.

The main goal of our research was to investigate the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS), one of several measures applied to the evaluation of patient's functional agility and his/her condition after brain damage therapy. In the first stream of the research, our attention was focused on the question of the importance of particular parameters, used by medical staff for the description of the patients situation after the stroke. Our current research was based on the application of own, in-house developed data mining systems to the same dataset describing the GOS. Results of our experiments shows that from 42 descriptive attributes, just 5 from them were never accessed in the decision rules induction process. On the other hand parameters having the larger frequency quotient (importance of the parameter in diagnostic process) should be diagnosed very carefully.
