The 5th International Conference on Intelligent environments (IE'09), held at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Castelldefels, Barcelona, Spain, provides a multidisciplinary forum for researchers and engineers from across the world to present their latest research and to discuss future directions in the area of intelligent environments. This volume forms the combined proceedings of five workshops held at the IE'09. Included are the proceedings of the: Workshop on Digital Object Memories (DOMe'09); Workshop on RFID Technology - Concepts, Practices and Solutions (RFID'09); Workshop on Artificial intelligence Techniques for ambientintelligence (AITAmI09); Workshop on Ethical Design of ambientintelligence (EDAmI'09); and, Workshop on smart Offices and Other Workplaces (SOOW'09).

The term B2(B2B) is used by the authors to characterize the seamless integration of business services, offered by logistic and financial service providers, into existing, already IT-supported, manufacturing B2B networks. The European project FLUID-WIN has developed methods, procedures and a platform to support such business-to-network relationships, The paper shortly presents the FLUID-WIN platform itself and the significant potentials for the service providers as well as for all companies involved in the B2B network. The evaluation of the FLUID-WIN outcomes by the end users is an essential step to guarantee the quality and usability. For that purpose both the software and also the business processes influenced by the FLUID-WIN platform are evaluated. Anyway, especially the workflow oriented B2(B2B)-approach and its cross-enterprise dimension induces some specifics. The description of the challenges and experiences of the evaluation shell give an impression of that ambitious task.

Reputation mechanisms are considered as trust-building processes which are highly relevant in e-commerce marketplaces. The different forms of reputation building mechanisms have different level of significance and necessity for trust building. The paper presents results from pilot research, where the significance and necessity of particular trust building mechanisms esp. reputation building services for electronic marketplace was analyzed. Together, the possibilities of service model are discussed.

Lately, the use of ontologies for semantic description in pervasive systems has been researched and applied in numerous projects. The characteristic of this type of representation for data, services, interfaces, etc. allows the interaction between entities in a pervasive environment and then the development of advanced services. However, pervasive systems include a high number of mobile devices that have to access to several ontology-based information repositories with different representations, interfaces, etc. This fact limits the interaction capacity of mobile devices which have not been designed taking this interaction into account. In this paper we define an access extension for ontology-based pervasive systems that can be automatically generated. Based on the general structure of such systems and on the characteristics of the applications specifically developed to interact with them, we have derived several patterns in order to ease the information lookup and to allow a basic interaction with the system. In this way, we define a set of access patterns based in common structures and interactions. These patterns work in a similar way that design patterns do in software engineering. They are designed independently of the specific ontology implementation and representation. Finally, we present a tool that automatically generates a specific implementation of the defined patterns and we describe a prototype that uses this extension by means of Web Services.

Designing an architecture that supports pervasive computing usually addresses two issues: the context within interact the system components and the services which are available in the environment. This paper proposes a semantic approach to design an architecture for pervasive systems focusing on these two issues. The ambient is viewed as a set of context elements named CoxEl. Physically a CoxEl is a (mobile) device presents in the environment. The core of a CoxEl is an ontology that represents the context, the services, the resources and the neighbourhood of every CoxEl. This ontology is also used for semantic interaction between the CoxEls. This paper illustrates the different semantic interactions that may occurs among the CoxEls. It also describes the roles that play the CoxEls within the ambient.

This paper presents proposed solution for analyses of performed actions within a virtual intelligent and interactive environment. Investigated environment provides important functionalities that are based on principles of ambientintelligence paradigm, i.e. context awareness, personalized and adaptive environment, or access through mobile devices. All activities and changes are monitored and stored into a database to provide one source of data for analytical purposes. The other separate (possibly distributed) databases are various knowledge and content repositories with integrated support services for access by different actors in the environment;and an user database with information about users. Data from these repositories are used for visualization of the whole evolution processes or its selected parts through time-line. The visualization contains information about performed events, relevant objects and actors, interactions between users or between users and environment, all described by semantic metadata. Users will have possibility to create potentially interesting working or critical patterns that will be evaluated through historical data. Results of this evaluation can be seen as new practices, ready for further re-use.

ambientintelligence is a new rapidly growing research area that tries to improve environment in which we live. This paper proposes ambient intelligent architecture that uses a concept of agent-based cognitive personal assistant for providing relevant information from different sources to the user. Fuzzy cognitive maps are discussed as a feasible structure for knowledge representation for agents.

To design socially embedded systems, this paper proposes to learn from human behavior in participatory simulation, where scenario-guided agents and human-controlled avatars coexist in a shared virtual space and jointly perform simulations. To create agent models incrementally, we use machine learning technologies. We characterize agents by using a various combinations of behavior rules instantiated by the user operating his/her avatar. We apply hypothetical reasoning, which offers consistent selection of hypotheses and allows us to start with incompatible behavior rules, for incrementally improving the agent models. Using data obtained during the participatory simulation and the hypotheses including known behavior rules, we can generate an explanation for human behavior.

This paper describes a User Centered Design driven development of a system for modern digital home based on the ISO/IEC 24752 standard: Universal Remote Console - URC. The primary target group - elderly users - has problems accepting certain devices and their respective user interfaces. We show that certain user interfaces are acceptable despite the fact that they convey a complex set of functionalities in a modern digital home.
