Digital twins (DTs) facilitate today's product management and digitalized production. Throughout the design, engineering, manufacturing and operation of products, DTdata needs to be exchanged. The lack of interoperability, especially in the context of cross-company data exchange, is a major challenge that hinders the effective use of DT data, starting in the early lifecycle phases. To tackle this challenge, this paper presents an Asset Administration Shell (AAS) solution that enables the creation, provision, integration, and use of cross-company digital twin data throughout the entire product lifecycle, with a particular focus on the design and engineering phase. The exchange mechanism ensures interoperability of digital twin data, starting from the generation, design and engineering phase, and thus building the data basis for all subsequent lifecycle phases, such as manufacturing or operation. The AAS implementation lays ground for overarching all product lifecycle stages and thus meets semantic, technical and organizational interoperability challenges. This paper details the overarching research problem and the design science-based methodology, before providing insight into the results of the initial design cycle.

This paper mainly introduces the basic situation of Lan-Bridge's participation in the CCMT 2024 machine translation evaluation project. In this evaluation, we participate in the bilingual translation projects for three minority languages: Mongolian to Chinese, Tibetan to Chinese, and Uygur to Chinese. We adopt the Transformer model based on the self-attention network as our foundation and train three machine translation models for these three language pairs. The paper primarily discusses the specific methods and experimental details employed by the model, providing an in-depth analysis and discussion of the model performance in the bilingual translation tasks for the three minority languages.

Self and co-regulation of learning (SCRL) are strategies that students can adopt to become more active and committed to their learning. Encouraging students to adopt these strategies is a challenge for teachers that can be met by using narratives as a teaching resource. To support teachers in this process, we present a method for evaluating, classifying, and reflecting on excerpts from immersive narratives for SCRL, so they objectively base their decision-making. The method was developed as an artifact of Design science Research (DSR). In the Design stage of DSR, a 4-stage scheme was developed, and 38 criteria were described to identify and classify narratives that guide or encourage students to adopt SCRL strategies. In the DSR demonstration stage, we tested the method in an asynchronous e-learning curricular unit in Portuguese higher education, which uses a narrative-oriented immersive learning approach for SCRL, called e-SimProgramming. The results show that the graphic visualization of the classification made it possible to perceive the occurrence of the SCRL categories in the narratives, enabling the teacher to be inspired and reflect on the categories to be enhanced for necessary changes in the narrative in line with their pedagogical objectives.

The continuing digital transformation makes metadata management an essential technology for identifying and extracting value from data. Previous research has already reviewed the current state of the art for data catalogs and metadata management models, described challenges and examined critical success factors, goals and benefits. However, the reference to industrial SMEs has yet to be included. In this paper, a structured literature review is conducted. We assess the current state of research and propose possible future directions for the development of data catalogs in industrial SMEs. 29 documents from 2011 to 2024 were analyzed regarding metadata models in terms of industrial aspects, FAIR principles, reference to SMEs, and impact on business process management. In industrial SMEs, minimal studies were found addressing this topic. Therefore, there is a significant need for research on the requirements and challenges of implementing metadata management models in SMEs. Future research could focus on exploring the specific needs of SMEs in this area and investigate their impact on their process management and decision-making.

This paper presents the submission of Huawei Translation Services Center (HW-TSC) to machine translation tasks of the 20th China Conference on Machine Translation (CCMT 2024). We participate in the bilingual machine translation task and multi-domain machine translation task. For these two translation tasks, we use training strategies such as regularized dropout, bidirectional training, data diversification, forward translation, back translation, alternated training, curriculum learning, and transductive ensemble learning to train neural machine translation (NMT) models based on the deep Transformer-big architecture. Furthermore, to explore whether large language model (LLM) can effectively improve the translation quality of NMT models, we use supervised fine-tuning (SFT) to train llama2-13b as an Automatic post-editing (APE) model to improve the translation results of the NMT model on the multi-domain machine translation task. By using these plyometric strategies, our submission achieves a competitive result in the final evaluation.

Skills in the field of computer science (CS) are increasingly in demand. Often traditional teaching approaches are not sufficient to teach complex computational concepts. Interactive and digital learning experiences have been shown as valuable tools to support learners in understanding. However, the missing social interaction affects the quality of the learning experience. Adding collaborative and competitive elements can make the virtual learning environment even more social, engaging, and motivating for learners. In this paper, we explore the potential of collaborative and competitive elements in an interactive virtual laboratory environment with a focus on computer science education. In an AB study with 35 CS students, we investigated the effectiveness of collaborative and competitive elements in a virtual laboratory using interactive visualizations of sorting algorithms.

The accelerating integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies in higher education prompts an essential inquiry into their impact on academic outcomes. This study leverages a linear regression analysis to examine the relationship between the use of NLP technologies, specifically ChatGPT, and two key educational outcomes: academic performance and student engagement. Data collected from a sample of 30 students at Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University offers a statistical foundation to explore these dynamics. The research findings reveal a significant positive correlation between the use of NLP tools and enhanced academic performance, as well as increased levels of student engagement. These outcomes suggest that NLP technologies, when judiciously integrated into the educational process, have the potential to significantly bolster learning and engagement. The study's implications resonate beyond the immediate university context, providing insights that may inform pedagogical strategies and the broader discourse on AI in education.

Emotion semantic inconsistency is a ubiquitous challenge in multi-modal sentiment analysis (MSA). MSA involves analyzing sentiment expressed across various modalities like text, audio, and videos. Each modality may convey distinct aspects of sentiment, due to the subtle and nuanced expression of human beings, leading to inconsistency, which may hinder the prediction of artificial agents. In this work, we introduce a modality-conflicting test set and assess the performance of both traditional multi-modal sentiment analysis models and multi-modal large language models (MLLMs). Our findings reveal significant performance degradation across traditional models when confronted with semantically conflicting data and point out the drawbacks of MLLMs when handling multi-modal emotion analysis. Our research presents a new challenge and offers valuable insights for the future development of sentiment analysis systems.

Cognitive computing (CC) applied to business process management (BPM) utilizes intelligent capabilities to structure and organize the management of business processes. BPM in organizations remains a crucial pillar for increasing operational efficiency and accelerating routine-based processes. By adopting CC, organizations can leverage intelligent methods and proactive decision-making, ushering in a new era of cognitive BPM. This raises the question of how the challenges and benefits of cognitive BPM compare to traditional BPM. Despite growing interest in the practical deployment of cognitive technologies, there has been limited research conducted in this area. To address this research gap, a systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to examine the current state of research on the use of cognitive technologies for improving BPM. Based on an initial classification matrix, we divide the topic of cognitive BPM into five dimensions and 16 characteristics. This solid theoretical foundation enables us to provide practitioners and researchers with a comprehensive overview and present the current state of the literature.

Avatars are central to the social experience of a virtual world, yet little is known about what avatars university students naturally choose/design for use in their education - and the subsequent impact on their learning experiences. This paper describes work conducted across three years (2020-2022), where 266 students in total were free to use avatars in on-line lectures/seminars within a semester-long module about virtual reality. A mixture of qualitative and quantitative analysis based on considerable observation, survey and interview data is used to propose a comprehensive framework for avatar design in Higher Education. The framework outlines four emergent themes (design, identity, interaction and anonymity) that characterize the student learning experience as an avatar. Future work should consider a broader range of students/avatars with greater interactivity possibilities, as well as the role of immersion.
