The practice of grading candidates according to their performance is widespread and of utmost importance, where the key is to assess each candidate's performance with reliable information. This paper aims to investigate peer grading in scenarios with ground truths, where there is an unknown ground truth represented by a real number for each candidate's performance. The final grade assigned to each candidate is determined by the assessments, which are assumed as unbiased estimators of the candidate's ground truth, made by both the experts and the candidates. We are interested in peer grading mechanisms that not only provide unbiased grades but are also resistant to strategic behaviors such as unilateral strategy deviation and collusion, which poses a challenging task in peer mechanism design. Generally, we make two contributions to the study of peer grading. First, we establish the impossibility of designing non-trivial grading mechanisms when the number of candidates is less than three. Second, we propose a practical and non-trivial grading mechanism, called the mean externality mechanism, for settings with at least three candidates, which is proved to be unbiased, strategy-proof and collusion-proof.

Autonomous driving is one of the great problems of artificial intelligence that has not yet been solved. Therefore, one of the methods applied to seek the solution to this problem is the development of algorithms on vehicle platforms at a scale of 1:10. Because of this, the Mexican Robotics Tournament (TMR) vigorously promotes the development of these technologies through challenges or tests that simulate real scenarios at a scale of 1:10. This includes vehicles, signs, vehicular crossings, etc. The article will present a hybrid methodological proposal based on classical digital image processing and the use of a Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) artificial intelligence algorithm for lane detection in a vehicle at 1/10 scale. The proposal obtained an efficiency of more than 95% of lane detection, the algorithm was evaluated on the track of the Mexican Robotics Tournament 2024 (TMR), held at the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (UANL), by the Mexican Federation of Robotics (FMR), in which a first place was obtained in the Auto ModelCar category of the current year.

Deciphering the underlying genetic structure of cancer holds significance for diagnosis endeavors. The computational diagnosis of diseases stands out as a pivotal challenge within contemporary bioinformatics research. In fact, gene expression is dysregulated in tumors, identify co-expressed genes and coherent patterns will assist in pinpointing dysregulated gene function, thereby facilitating disease diagnosis. High-dimensional clustering has proven to be a fruitful pursuit for identifying dysregulated gene function. This non-convex optimization problem has been demonstrated to be NP-hard. The gene expression datasets are featured by the high-dimensionality (yielding millions of measurements), and hence this combinatorial problem becomes time-consuming and highly intensive. Empirically, conventional algorithms don't scale well with this kind of datasets. To that end, we have proposed a more accurate algorithm that runs two times faster (in average) than many other alternatives.

The incorporation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and robotics into smart building environments has introduced new opportunities for human activity recognition (HAR). The paper introduces an innovative approach that combines IoT sensors and robotic data to create a complete dataset for Human Activity Recognition (HAR) in smart building settings. The system utilises a synchronised data collection technique to gather information from fixed IoT sensors, wearables, and smart devices, as well as from mobile robots. The dataset obtained includes a wide variety of sensor modalities, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, microphones, motion sensors, smart plugs, and cameras (thermal, RGB-D). A proposed strategy is presented to tackle the difficulties of multimodal data fusion and classification by fusing all sensor data into a single machine learning model. This study lays the groundwork for future works into Human Activity Recognition (HAR) systems, which involve the integration of multi-sensor settings, sophisticated data fusion algorithms, context-sensitive identification, and tailored support for individuals working or residing in smart environments. The setup of the sensors and use cases of this study were conducted in a smart home environment. Nevertheless, the integrated system can be tailored to suit the requirements of any smart building.

In this study, the objective was to understand the receptivity to wearable devices in Portugal and Brazil, analyzing factors such as demographic characteristics, technological experiences and personal opinions. To achieve this, we adapted the Unified Technology Acceptance and Use Model 2 (UTAUT2) model and collected responses from university students and frequent internet users using a Likert scale questionnaire. Data analysis revealed a majority of Portuguese participants and a stronger trend of acceptance among the youngest, most educated and those with the greatest affinity with technology, especially men. The proportion of users and non-users of wearables was balanced, with greater acceptance among individuals aged 35 to 59, women and those with a positive attitude towards technology. Surprisingly, social influence did not prove to be as decisive in the acceptance of wearables as initially assumed. The results indicate a growing preference for the adoption of these devices, but also point to challenges related to the perceived value and, consequently, the cost of the products, which suggests a promising terrain for future research and technological advances.

Manufacturing systems often face conflicting demands between production, maintenance, and transport services, as the activities of each can disrupt the operations of the others. To address these conflicts and ensure a harmonized workflow, this paper introduces an advanced multi-agent system with three distinct SCEP (Supervisor, Customers, Environment and Producers) models for production, maintenance, and transport. The objective is to facilitate distributed joint scheduling of these three critical areas, with considerations about the health state of the machines. This approach allows the integrated scheduling of production, transport, and predictive maintenance activities based on real-time health assessments of the machines. By doing so, the system aims at resolving operational conflicts among the services, ensuring that all stakeholders of these three domains collaborate effectively towards a common goal.

Advances in medical imaging have enabled detailed digitisation and representation of human anatomy, but challenges remain when modelling complex structures. Statistical models have been developed to capture variations in shape, pose, and intensity features of anatomical structures. However, these models often embed a single feature. This paper investigates how a novel dynamic multi-feature-class Gaussian process modelling framework (DMFC-GPM) designed to learn shape, pose, and intensity features in continuous domains, facilitates the modelling of complex anatomical structures. The work evaluates the framework's ability to capture multi-feature variations within complex anatomy. Computed tomography image data was processed to build and validate a statistical shape, pose and intensity neutral-arched foot model (12 bones). Framework evaluation was done by validation of the model using specificity, and generality. Fitting the model globally to all objects resulted in specificity and generality reported as average root mean square (RMS) of 0.61 +/- 0.11mm and 1.02 +/- 0.21 mm, and average Hausdorff distance (Hd) of 3.47 +/- 0.98mm and 7.56 +/- 1.33 mm, respectively. Further validation of the model marginalised to the talus bone resulted in specificity and generality of 0.81 +/- 0.25mm and 1.20 +/- 0.48mm average RMS and 3.24 +/- 1.10mm and 6.50 +/- 2.34mm average Hd, respectively. The talus model variations were consistent with literature. Thus, the novel DMFC-GPM framework can model complex anatomies such as the foot arch.

Sequential recommendation is a technique used to predict a user's next purchased items by modeling their historical behaviors. However, traditional sequential recommender methods typically capture only sequential patterns and without taking other temporal information into account. As a result, their performance may be limited. In this paper, a time-aware sequential recommendation model based on attention mechanism (named TASR) is proposed. To enhance the modeling of user preferences and improve recommendation performance, our model captures temporal features of the sequence and combines them with item representations. Specifically, our approach utilizes an aspect-aware convolution to extract user and item representations from the embedding matrix. These representations are then merged with the temporal features during the temporal dynamic modeling process. Finally, multi-layer attention is used to derive users' short-term preferences and the ratings of items are predicted using our TASR model. Extensive experiments on three datasets demonstrate the superiority of TASR against several state-of-art baselines.

Recent advancements in new technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are revolutionizing healthcare. The healthcare sector has historically lagged in the adoption of digital technologies. However, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the pace of their adoption. AI-powered conversational agents like chatbots and virtual assistants, which are computer programs capable of mimicking human conversations, are increasingly being adopted to improve the quality of healthcare services. Conversational agents can increase access to healthcare and improve communications between patients and healthcare professionals. In this paper, we present the result of a systematic literature review that investigated the potential of conversational agents for transforming the healthcare sector. A total of 9,654 papers published between 2019 and 2023 were retrieved from three databases using author-defined search phrases and inclusion/exclusion criteria. Following the screening process, 35 peer-reviewed papers were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. We identified two main categories and eight sub-subcategories as areas where conversational agents could transform healthcare. The two main categories were 'augmentation of patient care and engagement', and 'optimization of clinical workflow and decision support'. The sub-categories include the dissemination of personalized information, chronic disease management and lifestyle integration, automated symptom triage, as well as telemedicine and remote consultation. The results showed that conversational agents have the potential to transform the healthcare sector and enhance the quality of healthcare service delivery.

Language-conditioned robotic imitation learning plays a vital role at the convergence of robotics, natural language processing, and computer vision. It facilitates the creation of robots that can comprehend their surroundings and carry out intricate tasks in response to human language instructions. However, existing methods exhibit poor generalization to unseen environments, limiting their practical application. To tackle this problem, we introduce an innovative framework that utilizes pre-trained vision-language models (VLMs) for robotic manipulation tasks. Our approach employs a hierarchical decomposition strategy, dividing robot control learning into two levels: high-level visionlanguage comprehension and task planning, and low-level action execution. The VLMs are slightly fine-tuned using imitation learning on language-conditioned manipulation datasets. We evaluate our method on the CALVIN benchmark for zero-shot long-horizon language-conditioned tasks, the average completed task length improves more than 2.5 times compared to a strong baseline method HULC. This demonstrates significant improvements in generalization capability. Our research presents a simple and effective solution, successfully integrating pre-trained VLMs into robotic control systems, offering valuable insights for future research and practical applications.
