Industry labours under chronic IT skills shortages, despite burgeoning graduate unemployment. This presents a paradox, frequently diagnosed as a simple matter of skills mismatch. Its stubborn persistence, though, notwithstanding decades of sustained interrogation, suggests that a more complex web of factors may be at play. An exploratory literature review of relevant theoretical approaches is undertaken with the aim of expanding the range of factors to be considered in subsequent inquiries into the skills gap. The review proceeds from the specific to the general, interrogating Job Matching Theory, Human Capital and Signalling Theory, Institutional and Resource Dependence Theory, Social and Cultural Capital Theory and Structural Hole Theory. Salient concepts from each are introduced, and their implications extrapolated onto the area of concern. A central theme of trust in the face of uncertainty emerges strongly from the review. Interventions are suggested in the light of these findings.

This paper proposes the design, simulation and implementation of a 3 x 1 linear log-periodic antenna array (LPDA), operating at 5G frequencies (26.40 GHz and 28.25 GHz) and also in the Ku-band for satellite communications (12-18 GHz). In order to improve its characteristics, the array is modelled, consisting of identical antennas, oriented in the x-axis and in the y-axis. The prototype antenna is derived from the base scheme of a log-periodic antenna. By tripling this antenna twice on the x-axis and once on the y-axis, the bandwidth is improved. The array is simulated using ANSYS HFSS software. Consequently, an analysis of the directivity, radiation pattern and gain of the simulated antenna for 5 GHz was carried out, achieving that it operates at frequencies of 26.40 GHz and 28.25 GHz, with a bandwidth of 1 GHz with -22.31 dB loss and 650 with -42.00 dB MHz respectively. In addition, the demonstration of a multiband antenna is carried out through a comparative analysis of the reflection coefficient (S11) of the simulated antenna with respect to the antenna implemented in a frequency range of satellite communications (15 GHz to 20 GHz), through the vector network analyser equipment "KEYSIGHT E5071C ENA Series Network Analyzer" Escuela Superior Politecnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH) and Matlab software.

We present an optimization problem for automatic irrigation systems. The solution approach, based on the generalized set covering problem, considers a specific urbanization with factors such as risk assessments and associated costs, which contribute to scalability and long-term sustainability. A mathematical model is proposed to minimize the number of sensors and sprinklers, where the aim is to maximize the irrigation efficiency of a public square. The preliminary results allow us to analyze different morphologies of public spaces. The methodology used considers two phases: the first phase optimizes the number of sensors and their placement, maintaining a high percentage of coverage;Then, the second phase optimizes the number of sprinklers and their placement, achieving full coverage. It is concluded that the module has the ability to be extensible and scalable, with minimum computational time. The model can be integrated into a web app with a TRL4 maturity level.

The classification and detection of COVID-19 from chest X-ray images using deep learning models is challenging due to the limited amount of training data and the potential for overfitting. Data augmentation remains one of the most effective solutions to address these issues. However, traditional augmentation techniques often generate images that lack the visual characteristics that are most informative for the model. In this paper, we propose a data augmentation approach based on explainable deep learning for COVID-19 diagnosis using chest X-ray images. Our method leverages explainable deep learning techniques to identify the most significant regions in chest X-ray (CXR) images, ensuring that the model focuses on critical areas for disease detection. We extract saliency maps, which act as an importance filter derived from explainability methods. These saliency maps are then used to guide the data augmentation process, ensuring that the generated images emphasize the features most relevant for accurate diagnosis. This method enhances the learning process of complex models by providing a more informative training dataset. It can result in a significant increase in accuracy (approximately 3-20%), a reduction in false-positive images, and a minimization of loss functions and overfitting issues.

In the ongoing digitalization process, low-code development platforms could be seen as promising solutions to help enterprises create their business applications in a short time. This is due to the use of different approaches such as visual modeling, model-driven development, rapid application development, and automatic code generation. On the market, there are plenty of vendors of low-code development platforms that propose a variety of products with similar parameters. In this regard, a mathematical model for evaluation and selection is proposed. This model considers three main groups of low-code development platforms assessment criteria. A characteristic feature of the model is that each group can be considered with a different degree of importance when forming the final decision. The applicability of the formulated decision-making model is demonstrated in a real example in the evaluation of five platforms according to 23 criteria distributed into 3 groups. The obtained results convincingly show the applicability of the proposed decision-making model in the assessment and evaluation of low-code development platforms.

Model transformation is a critical aspect of modern software engineering, enabling the effective development, maintenance, and evolution of software systems while improving their quality, correctness, and interoperability. However, one issue arises when a model under transformation references artifacts such as source code files or binary executables: Model transformations typically do not consider the referenced artifacts, resulting in the possibility of them becoming incompatible with the final model after transformation. As a result, the referenced artifacts often require manual adaptations which can be complex, time-consuming, and error-prone. To address this issue, we present an approach that integrates artifact translation mechanisms into the model transformation process. In addition to the translation between different concrete artifacts during model transformation, our approach also enables the use of abstract artifacts in models in order to translate them into concrete artifacts during model refinement, which is a special type of model transformation. To validate the practical feasibility of our approach, we present a prototype and two case studies in the domain of quantum software engineering.

Poor handwriting is a common issue in the general school population, particularly among children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) [1]. A comprehensive handwriting assessment could combine traditional paper-and-pencil methods with computer-based analyses that objectively evaluate factors such as writing speed, pressure, and letter height. However, the literature provides mixed evidence on the relationship between these process-based factors and handwriting legibility [2, 3]. This study explores the relationship between selected process-based factors and traditional product-based measures of handwriting quality in children with DCD and typically developing (TD) children. We evaluated 96 typically developing children (mean age: 113.64 months, SD: 7.68) and 22 children with DCD (mean age: 110.28 months, SD: 9.12) from the 3rd and 4th grades, matched by age. Traditional product-based handwriting assessments, including the BHK (which evaluates legibility and speed) and the VMI (which assesses visual-motor integration), were conducted. These were compared with computer-based measures of the handwriting process, including writing velocity (V), axial pen pressure (APP), and letter height (LH). The tasks involved three handwriting exercises (repeating letters under normal, fast, and accurate conditions) and two drawing exercises (repeating wheels and eggs). In nearly all tasks, we observed a moderate positive correlation between BHK legibility scores and two process-based variables: V and LH. No significant correlation was found between legibility and APP. Our preliminary results suggest that higher writing velocity and larger letter dimensions may serve as key indicators for identifying poor handwriting. These findings underscore the importance of further investigation into letter dimension analysis in both children with DCD and typically developing populations.

In the field of education, virtual reality and augmented reality are significant for realizing online education and creating a multisensorial learning environment. Virtual online education requires effective support for reconstructing 3D representations of real-world objects. In recent years, the Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) is renowned for its high-quality 3D reconstruction capabilities across various fields. However, NeRF still suffers from artifacts named floaters when extended to large-scale scenes such as campuses or museums, which reduces its general applicability in the online education sector. In this paper, we analyze the possible causes of floater generation and reuse the NeRF pipeline to compute scene priors for guiding the geometric reconstruction of large-scale scenes. Experimental results show that our method can effectively remove floating artifacts and provide better background details. Our method achieves competitive performance on metrics compared to baseline models without additional computational overhead.

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, effective project management is vital for achieving business goals and maintaining competitiveness. Organizations are increasingly adopting project management methodologies and investing in the necessary skills and tools. This study aims to enhance resource management in industrialization projects by optimizing resource allocation and utilization while minimizing costs. Strategies developed in this study seek to ensure project objectives are met more efficiently, thereby enhancing overall project profitability. A significant issue identified was the lack of a comprehensive tool to provide an overview of product-related activities. To address this, two proposals were implemented: an activity calendar and a dashboard highlighting key information. These tools brought substantial benefits to the company under study, including reduced task time and complexity, resulting in annual savings of over (sic)12,600. By addressing these gaps, the project achieved significant improvements in cost management, resource allocation, and task visibility, positioning the company for long-term success in a competitive market.

The boom in the Indian e-commerce market has changed how people typically shop since the COVID-19 pandemic. Ensuring accessibility is a must for e-commerce platforms to create inclusive experiences and equitable access to digital spaces. However, many companies overlook a portion of their customer base, namely the visually impaired. A significant number of web platforms in India lack alternative text for non-text content (e.g., images, audio, and video), keyboard accessibility, and screen reader compatibility which affects the smooth navigation of various e-commerce platforms. The WCAG 2.2 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) has a set of guidelines and success criteria to ensure that websites and digital content are accessible and usable. However, it needs more emphasis on improving the overall experience for visually impaired users who rely on screen readers to shop for products and services on e-commerce platforms. Based on a comprehensive literature review, user studies, and UX audits, we identify specific shortcomings in the guidelines and how AI can be incorporated further into e-commerce systems to enhance accessibility. Our findings suggest a more holistic approach to accessibility that includes user testing, real-world user scenarios, and integration of emerging technologies like AI, including chatbots and image identification.
