Despite the many benefits of lifestyles and automation, through the Internet of Things, there are risks involved as most of the devices interconnect because of insecurity, compromised devices, and weak encryption. The protectors of cyber security are Intrusion Detection Systems, which are similar to detecting insurgencies by carefully assessing the systems and network activities for signs of malicious activities, unauthorized entry, or potential penetration. This work investigates the possible ways of preventing IoT networks using IDS designed for IoT. This work discusses limitations to a greater extent, suggesting their lack of adaptability and limited resources, and it does so by carrying out the categorization by different varieties and subtypes of the IDS like collaborative, deep learning, feature selection, etc., and then having a research evaluation to decide the pros and cons. After that, the current trends of the IoT environment, promising directions for enhancing security, and specific guidelines for assessing the performance of IDS are discussed. Conclusively, this study further contributes to the continuous establishment of IoT IDS to ensure a safer and longerlasting connected devices future.

Cities are considered one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gas emissions and consume vast amounts of energy. They, therefore, play a significant role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the SDG indicators are reported on a country level, and city-level assessments in Switzerland are voluntary, non-standardized, and only updated in larger time intervals. The current paper focuses on applying SDG 11 as a metric for visualizing urban efforts toward achieving a broader set of SDGs. This involves a thorough assessment of each goal within SDG 11 to determine its measurability. With the Smart City Sustainability Tracker (SCST), we propose a platform based on KNIME, which can help monitor the progress in cases where sufficient data is available for doing a regression analysis. In cases where too little information is available, we propose to at least provide some process models, which can help to standardize at least the processes of collecting measurable KPIs to turn manual project work conducted in heterogeneous environments into reference processes, which can help to implement the necessary data collection more quickly. The standardization and visualization of city-level reporting could support decision-makers in developing more adequate measures to follow the trajectories of successful implementations or to detect and correct failures quickly to ensure reaching the shared goals in time. Finally, we conclude with a short validation of the potential reuse and adaptability of the SCST from the application of the city of Zurich, to cities in totally different circumstances such as for the situation of SDG11 in Pretoria, South Africa.

Accurate electric load forecasting is one important issue in many applications for power grid systems. However, traditional forecasting models have limitations in capturing nonlinear dynamic properties across different time scales. Hence, the uncertainty and complexity of power grid systems makes accurate prediction of power loads a challenging task. To overcome the bottleneck, we propose a deep learning model called Multi-Scale Fourier Net (MSFNet), which can effectively capture dynamic properties of different scales of power load time series by employing multi-scale analysis through Fourier Transform. Unlike conventional methods, the MSFNet uses FFT to identify primary periodic features as time scales for multi-scale analysis, while also utilizing Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) and the channel attention mechanism to capture long-term dependencies. The PJM electricity market dataset in the United States is adopted to evaluate the performance of the MSFNet. Experimental results indicate that MSFNet outperforms benchmark time series forecasting models in various evaluation metrics, with particularly notable performance in the mean squared error (MSE) and root mean squared error (RMSE) metrics.

The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm has become widespread, and only expected to increase in magnitude. The need for security and privacy measures adapted to this kind of environments has become apparent. This paper presents a comprehensive identity and trust architecture for managing the lifecycle of IoT devices, developed within the H2020 project ERATOSTHENES. The architecture focuses on secure device identity management, trust evaluations, and seamless interactions within multi-domain IoT environments. As part of the innovation, the solution includes the integration of self-sovereign identity principles and technologies such as Decentralized Identifiers, Verifiable Credentials and distributed ledger technologies. The proposed architecture leverages advanced cryptographic techniques and Physical Unclonable Functions to enhance security and privacy. The identity solution is complemented with a trust framework that continuously evaluates the domain's participants, establishing a zero-trust approach. This is enhanced with cyberthreat monitoring, sharing and mitigating tools to provide security across different planes. Thus, the framework addresses critical security and privacy requirements withing the lifecycle of devices, ensuring robust and scalable IoT device management from their initial bootstrapping to their decommissioning.

Some might argue that text-input-related HCI research in English is verging towards saturation. On the other hand, a lot more work remains to be done in Indian languages (and in fact, in several other languages around the world). Through this paper, we release in the public domain IDCText, a web based tool that makes it easier for researchers to conduct text entry studies for Indian (and other) languages. This application is compatible with all contemporary web browsers and supports studies using any keyboard that can enter text in a web browser text field. The tool has many features that have been used in text input studies (including some special features that Indian language HCI researchers might need), and automatically calculates several metrics that text input studies report. To test our tool, and also to demonstrate its capabilities, we conducted an empirical within-subjects counterbalanced systematic longitudinal study (N= 10) to compare the performance of two experimental Marathi keyboards, namely Swarachakra and Swaravarna. We present the metrics that emerged from IDCText. We also reflect on the current capabilities of the tool and the future possibilities for improvement. The tool is hosted on a website and is accompanied by a video tutorial that shows how a HCI researcher can set up and conduct a new text input study. Through this paper, we also release IDCText code in the public domain in the open source, so that other researchers can continue to build on it.

Methods for node attribute prediction tasks utilize graph embedding approaches for graph data processing. However, many of these embedding strategies are developed leveraging specifically graphs' structural information. However, the graph offers diverse information of various types, and in case of scarce input information, careful incorporation of available data types can help achieve the expected performance. Incorporating available network information types, such as node attributes, inherent properties, and structures, into the graph embedding strategy for node attribute prediction requires understanding their effectiveness. To this end, our study thoroughly analyzes the relationship between network information types and their impact on attribute prediction performance within graphs. We evaluate the performance of the attribute prediction method with diverse information types and explore the benefits of different data combinations. Our results prove the contribution of feature information alongside network topology for node attribute prediction.

Code-generation Models are Large Language Models (LLMs) that are fine-tuned to generate code from natural-language prompts. Prior work shows that such models can democratize programming by translating clear English-language prompts into code for simple programming tasks. In this paper, we explore whether this democratization can extend to novice programmers who lack proficiency in English but are able to craft clear prompts in another language. Specifically, we consider prompts in Hinglish, a mixture of Hindi and English that many students in India are comfortable with. We make two contributions. First, we propose a semi-automated technique to translate English prompts into Hinglish, and we use this technique to create HinglishEval: a Hinglish translation of the widely-used code-generation benchmark HumanEval. Second, we compare the performance of several popular open- and closed-source code-generation models on Hinglish and English prompts. Our findings suggest that although code-generation models are generally more effective at generating accurate code from English prompts, their efficacy with Hinglish prompts is promising.

Given the important role and significance of smart wheelchairs in helping elderly peoplemove and improving their navigation ability in complex environments with dynamic obstacles, this paper studies a comprehensive method based on laser vision mapping and navigation to improve the environment perception and navigation ability of smart wheelchairs. We use V-LOAM for environmental mapping and mix visual and liDAR data for high-precision map construction. For global path planning, we improve the A* algorithm, introduce heuristic function optimization and path smoothing, and improve the planning efficiency and path quality. For local obstacle avoidance, the dynamic window algorithm (DWA) is used to respond to environmental changes in real time to ensure safety. The results of the experiment demonstrate that this approach excels in constructing maps, planning global paths, and avoiding local obstacles. Furthermore, it enhances the navigation capabilities of intelligent wheelchairs within dynamic environments. In the future, we will further optimize and expand the application scenario to verify its wide applicability and robustness.

Training algorithms through Federated Learning has emerged as a promising strategy to safeguard data privacy in distributed environments. This training can be performed on several devices, ranging from high-capacity servers to devices with limited capabilities. However, handling numerous data sources can overload these devices, especially low-power ones, increasing response time. A particular scenario is Virtual Reality, as it requires connection to multiple data sources where latency is critical. Virtual Reality devices have traditionally required a continuous connection to computer equipment, limiting their versatility and the advantages of wireless devices. Recent technological advancements in these devices have increased their computational capabilities, enabling them to perform certain tasks independently. This work addresses the challenge of training a neural network on Virtual Reality devices through a federated system, to develop an enriched collaborative model stored and aggregated in the Cloud. The objective is to evaluate the computational costs and discern the possibilities and limitations of Virtual Reality in Artificial Intelligence.

The teaching of the Thematic Fields related to the Supply Chain, based on the New Curriculum (CS) in the Vocational High School (Sector of Management and Economy - specialization "Warehouse and Supply Systems" should have as a fundamental methodological principle the effort to increase the active participation of students. The learning outcomes and the skills that, based on the new supply chain management systems, students will be asked to develop will be the starting point for the teaching practice and how it is designed and implemented. The appropriate use of educational activities (indicatively: case studies, small-scale investigations, simulations, role-playing, real data analysis, and decision-making) by teachers can not only enhance students' efforts to acquire knowledge on the effective organization, coordination, and management of the flow of products and information in the supply chain and to develop skills but also help them to learn autonomously, to cooperate, to communicate. In the context of the new Supply Chain Curriculum, the role of the teacher will change. They will not only be asked to implement, but to plan, experiment, organize, and put information to the test. He/she will also be called upon to create a supportive learning environment, encouraging the active involvement of pupils in individual and group activities and encouraging each pupil to chart his/her learning path. This environment should facilitate a learner-centered approach to knowledge, students' self-activity, their participation in groups, and the linking of knowledge with everyday knowledge and experience. It should also promote respect, self-esteem, cooperative learning, combining the freedom of speech with the ethics of dialogue, and thus transforming the relationships between pupils and between pupils and teacher into a field of mutual respect, trust, and care, in which each pupil can develop cognitively, emotionally, and morally.
