One of the most notable trends in Higher Education in recent decades is the implementation of various technologies focused on improving and innovating teaching and learning processes. Among these, technologies that offer immersive experiences stand out, such as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR), which together with others have consolidated the concept of Extended Reality (XR). These technologies offer more meaningful experiences and enable the possibility of increasing student motivation for topics in different fields of knowledge. The National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) has been making sustained efforts in recent years to incorporate and promote cutting-edge educational innovations. That is why, since 2021, UNAH has created the Extended Reality Innovation Center (CIRE-UNAH), a pioneering center in this field in Higher Education Institutions in the Central American region. The main goal of CIRE-UNAH is to enhance institutional capacities by bringing together teachers, researchers, and students who utilize XR technology to develop innovative products and services. Additionally, it aims to improve the digital and didactic skills of university professors to enhance the quality of teaching practices and student learning outcomes. This work highlights the theoretical principles that have led to the creation of CIRE-UNAH, the outcomes achieved so far, and the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats identified during the process.

Augmented Reality (AR) has been gaining increased attention in science education, as research has demonstrated its ability to provide students with an engaging and interactive way to learn. Students are able to visualize and experience phenomena that would otherwise remain hidden, practice in simulated hazardous conditions, and develop their spatial skills. While the potential benefits of this technology are clear, more research is needed to understand how students actually interact with and experience AR. Due to its novelty, using AR is challenging for some users. This sometimes leads to a high cognitive load during the learning task, which can ultimately impact performance. To investigate how students interact with an AR application, the present study examined students' in-app performance, knowledge acquisition and perceived cognitive load through a Bayesian hypothesis testing approach. Moreover, process mining was used to qualitatively assess students' behaviour patterns. The contribution of this work is twofold: 1) the observed interactions during an AR intervention provide insights into the relationship between students' cognitive load, in-app performance and knowledge acquisition, and 2) the process analysis helps to derive general recommendations for practitioners who are designing or using a similar AR application in their practice.

This study reveals the neural mechanisms underlying speech perception, particularly highlighting the hemispheric asymmetries and predictive coding mechanisms during the processing of spoken word stimuli compared to white noise. By employing electroencephalography (EEG), we conducted a two-dimensional (2D) ERP-image analysis to elucidate cortical responses on a single-trial basis, and utilized a multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) model with the renormalized partial directed coherence (rPDC) method, to construct effective brain network connections. Discriminative features of the EEG responses to word and white noise were identified in the primary auditory regions with a hemispheric bias and the higher cognitive regions with an early regulation. These findings corroborate the established left-hemisphere dominance in language processing and endorse the idea that the brain's engagement with auditory processing is an active process, involving the prediction of the upcoming input via an inhibitory copy along the top-down pathway, where the brain generates expectations based on internal linguistic knowledge to guide and constrain the interpretation of incoming sensory data.

Previous research demonstrates that the interruption of immersive experiences may lead to a bias in the results of questionnaires. Thus, the traditional way of presenting questionnaires, paper-based or web-based, may not be compatible with evaluating VR experiences. Recent research has shown the positive impact of embedding questionnaires contextually into the virtual environment. However, a comprehensive overview of the available VR questionnaire solutions is currently missing. Furthermore, no clear taxonomy exists for these different solutions in the literature. To address this, we present a literature review of VR questionnaire user interfaces (UI) following PRISMA guidelines. Our search returned 1.109 initial results, which were screened for eligibility, resulting in a corpus of 25 papers. This paper contributes to HCI and games research with a literature review of embedded questionnaires in VR, discussing the advantages and disadvantages and introducing a taxonomy of in-VR questionnaire UIs.

In this work, we address the computational challenges in personal audio systems implemented within a room environment, which typically operate under a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) framework. Traditional control algorithms require long control filters to prevent performance degradation, substantially increasing the computational load due to matrix inversion and overall system complexity. We introduce a novel approach utilizing second-order Kronecker product decomposition, where the loudspeaker control filter is expressed as the Kronecker product of two shorter sub-filters. This method effectively reduces the matrix dimensions required for a single filter, significantly lowering computational complexity compared to traditional time-domain techniques. An iterative filter design is then employed to closely approximate the globally optimal solution. Simulation results demonstrate that our method achieves performance comparable to that of the conventional algorithm while significantly reducing computational demands.

This paper proposes a novel neural denoising vocoder that can generate clean speech waveforms from noisy mel-spectrograms. The proposed neural denoising vocoder consists of two components, i.e., a spectrum predictor and a enhancement module. The spectrum predictor first predicts the noisy amplitude and phase spectra from the input noisy mel-spectrogram, and subsequently the enhancement module recovers the clean amplitude and phase spectrum from noisy ones. Finally, clean speech waveforms are reconstructed through inverse short-time Fourier transform (iSTFT). All operations are performed at the frame-level spectral domain, with the APNet vocoder and MP-SENet speech enhancement model used as the backbones for the two components, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed neural denoising vocoder achieves state-of-the-art performance compared to existing neural vocoders on the VoiceBank+DEMAND dataset. Additionally, despite the lack of phase information and partial amplitude information in the input mel-spectrogram, the proposed neural denoising vocoder still achieves comparable performance with the several advanced speech enhancement methods.

Over the past two decades, deep learning has shown to be the solution to numerous machine learning issues. It does have two major drawbacks, though: the need for large amounts of labelled data and the expense of training. By applying previously acquired information from a source data or task to a target data or task during training, a technique known as Deep Transfer Learning (DTL) in deep learning aims to lessen this dependency and associated expenses. Identifying and deciphering emotions from facial expressions is the technique of facial emotion recognition. Including as computer science, psychology, and neuroscience. The fields of marketing, security, healthcare, and human-computer interaction will all be impacted by the capacity to precisely identify emotions from facial expressions. With a focus on facial expression theories, facial emotion recognition types, datasets, algorithms, assessment metrics, and applications, this paper provides a comprehensive summary of the state of the art in face emotion detection today. The study also discusses moral issues surrounding the identification of facial emotions. This survey's objective is to offer a thorough overview of the state of face expression recognition technology as it stands today. The work focuses on employing convolution neural networks (CNNs) to extract features and categorise using the transfer learning technique on pre-trained models. The majority of research perform better on controlled datasets but falter on datasets containing image changes. Adeep learning model based on Xception and Convolution Neural Network (CNN) [1], has been developed in recent work to improve emotion recognition. This system can concurrently conduct face recognition and emotion categorization, focusing on key components such as the face. Respiratory sound classification is an important way to detect respiratory-related diseases. However, the scarcity of respiratory sou-nd data is a challenge, and these sounds are also influenced by patient demographic characteristics and recording location. We effectively address the above challenges through a Cross-Model Knowledge Distillation (CMKD) and metadata fusion approach. We use CrossModel Knowledge Distillation techniques to merge the Transformer model's strengths in global modeling with the CNN model's capabilities in local feature extraction and inductive bias. This approach can help the model quickly achieve excellent classification results with limited training data. Considering that we also need to incorporate the patient's clinical information to assist diagnosis during consultation, We first generate embedding for patient metadata using one-hot encoding, and then fuse them with audio embeddings obtained through cross-model knowledge distillation. This comprehensive approach enables accurate and thorough analysis of respiratory sounds. Our method was validated on the public SPRSound dataset and demonstrated a significant improvement in the experiments, with a 3.84%, 4.84%, and 4.34% increase in specificity, sensitivity, and average score, respectively, compared to the current optimal approach.

As automation in text generation emerges on the business level, research interest increases concerning the use of language in organizations and its impact on formalized procedures. Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) as a descriptive theory for text structuring is established to make explicit structural patterns and dependencies that can well be used for organizing and understanding business processes. Developed for discourse analysis and applied in a variety of domains, there is a good deal of conceptual overlap between RST and business process modeling, in particular when plain language forms the ground for modeling. Accordingly, RST may offer some theoretical backing that historically has been missing from business process modeling, and Business Process Management (BPM) could benefit from an analytical view underlying language communication behavior of involved actors. As demonstrated on existing findings, language-based knowledge articulation and representation related to RST could be further integrated into business process modeling and organizational design. This paper reports promising overlaps between RST and subject-oriented process modeling once human language comes into play. The results lay ground for modeling constructs facilitating human-oriented design of business processes.

Under the framework of Language Transfer and Prosodic Learning Interference Hypothesis, this study explores the influence of mother tongue on Chinese EFL learners' L2 English prosodic disambiguation on the basis of Chinese EFL learners' disambiguation in their L1 Chinese. The four parameters, duration, pause (if present), pitch (converted to semitone), and amplitude integral, are extracted. The results indicate (1) duration is the cue that functions efficiently. English natives produce C2 in NP longer than in VP, and this difference is significant. (2) In their mother language, Chinese EFL learners can disambiguate VP/NP ambiguity effectively. To be specific, participants produce both C1 and C2 in VP with longer duration, larger pitch range and greater amplitude integral, and this difference reach the significance level. (3) In their L2 English, Chinese EFL learners, like native English speakers, can effectively utilize duration to achieve the differentiating goal, but their specific performance is different from English natives' in that English natives show significant difference in duration ratio and C2's duration, while L2 learners show the difference in C1, which is partly influenced by their L1 Chinese and can be explained by Prosodic Learning Interference Hypothesis.
