The study of video game genres has been largely inspired by theories from other media, notably literature and film. In doing so, it has also taken up the aporias of these other theories, the question of genres never having found truly satisfactory answers. I will focus here on the case of survival horror in order to explore three types of generic theory (formalist, emotional and semio-pragmatic) and to expose their strengths, their weaknesses, in particular by pointing out the relative artificiality of certain approaches. Then, on the basis of the comments made, I will set out the criteria that should be considered as part of a generic classification close to the actual use of gamers, who remain the main people interested in the use of genres. However, the exact methodology for taking such criteria into account has yet to be defined.

Handwriting Mathematical Expression Recognition has several applications, including the potential to make Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) more accessible to underserved regions. However, young children's handwriting pose several challenges, even for instructors, calling for advanced approaches to understand their writings. This paper explores the potential of pre-trained Vision-Language Models (VLM) for recognizing numbers or mathematical expressions handwritten by children by comparing GPT-4V, LLaVA 1.5, and CogVLM on a dataset of 251 images. Results indicate that while pre-trained models offer promise, their performance without fine-tuning or zero-shot learning remains inadequate. Results reveal the challenges of utilizing pre-trained VLMs for recognizing children's handwriting, particularly in educational settings. Issues such as poor handwriting and partial erasures pose difficulties for existing models, with GPT-4V's safety system limitations hindering its efficacy. In general, CogVLM presented the best performance. GPT-4V exhibited superior performance in recognizing equations, but still struggles with handwritten content, highlighting the need for model refinement and data policies. This study contributes insights into the potential of existing pre-trained models in educational contexts and demonstrates the importance of, for example, fine-tuning to domain-specific datasets. Continued research is necessary to enhance VLM capabilities for educational support, particularly in children's handwriting recognition.

This paper shows that video games data may offer great opportunity to study human behavior. It demonstrates it by utilizing data from KovaaK's aim trainer to test the Hot Hand hypothesis. The findings indicate that even phenomena traditionally associated with sports can be better studied using video games. Specifically, the paper concludes that there is no evidence of the hot hand effect among KovaaK's players. Moreover, it argues that the data obtained from KovaaK's is of exceptionally high quality, surpassing previously utilized non-experimental data in the Hot Hand literature.

Our study aims to explore a personalized hybrid recommendation system for English word learning. This paper begins with an analysis of the research status and existing problems in the field of personalized English word recommendation, followed by the design of a personalized hybrid recommendation system for English words. The system considers factors such as the user's word mastery level, the forgetting curve, and examination frequency of words. It utilizes three intelligent technologies: word vectors, cosine similarity, and long short-term memory networks, providing an innovative solution for the problem of English word recommendation. The system's efficacy is validated through an offline simulation experiment, comparing its performance with four baseline algorithms. The results reveal that the system outperforms the baseline algorithms in multiple indicators, demonstrating its superior recommendation capabilities. These findings have significant application value for English word learning and contribute valuable insights to personalized English word recommendation.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in automatically generating reading comprehension questions with controllable difficulty levels for educational purposes. A recent study proposed a method for generating reading comprehension questions with levels of difficulty suitable to a learner's ability level involving the use of large language models and item response theory. However, the conventional method targets only the extractive question format, where the answer can be found directly in the reading passage, and does not support the multiple-choice question format that is widely used in educational settings. To address this issue, this study develops a method for automatically generating multiple-choice questions with controllable difficulty levels by extending the conventional method. We evaluate the performance of difficulty controllability of the generated questions based on the correct answer rate of responses and the nominal response model, a polytomous item response theory model. The results confirm that the proposed method can generate multiple-choice questions that accurately reflect the intended difficulty level.

The popularity of online courses has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic. In the case of nursing courses, traditional face-to-face instruction has been found to be most effective. Nurses are often taught face-to-face to obtain hands-on experience and direct interaction with instructors and peers. Furthermore, in-person instruction provides a supportive environment for students to ask questions, receive immediate feedback, and establish meaningful connections. This study aims to examine whether online instructors' immediacy and presence during COVID-19 affect nursing students' learning motivation, cognitive learning, and affective learning. Data were collected from 206 nursing students who studied online between September 2020 and February 2022. Descriptive statistics revealed that students viewed their instructors as moderately immediate and highly present in the classroom. This resulted in fair levels of affective learning, average cognitive learning, and moderate learning motivation. In addition, the results of the regression analysis also indicate that online instructors' immediacy and presence are closely associated with students' learning motivation and affective learning. However, correlational analysis shows that there exists a nuanced relationship between online instructors' immediacy and presence negatively affecting students' affective learning. Overall, the study revealed that online instruction needs to be further developed and integrated with social and emotional aspects. Addressing the social and emotional aspects of online instruction can provide students with the support and guidance they need to succeed in an online learning environment.

This article introduces the Lean Principles methodology for optimizing a "rework" area in an automotive parts supplier company using digital tools. The main objective is to reduce work-in-process inventory and eliminate waste in production processes. Hence, the improvement process analysis is divided into two phases. The first phase includes a process analysis and waste elimination. The second phase includes developing and implementing a software system for reworked material tracking. The software system allows precise control of materials in rework and collects valuable data in real time. Results indicate that the implementation of the proposed improvements and the software has positively impacted the efficiency and productivity of the "rework" area. Work-in-process inventory has been reduced by 20%, and the number of defective parts has been reduced by 15%. The improvements proposed provide the basis for creating a smart industry, as they help to improve efficiency, productivity, and quality using emerging digital technologies.

Mathematics teachers use open-ended (OE) problems to inspire creativity, facilitate learning by self-explanation, and encourage transfer learning. While these types of problems are pedagogically valuable, student answers often exhibit a combination of language and mathematical expressions, and the variation in these responses can make it difficult and time-consuming to assess. There have been growing efforts to research automatic short-answer grading (ASAG) methods to support teachers with this crucial task with promising results at the K12 level. However, whether these findings transfer to other student groups or across content, specifically at the college level, remains an open question. We implement a machine learning model for ASAG developed on K12 content and student responses and evaluate the transferability of previous findings to those at the college level. Our results show that the transferability can vary significantly, buttressing the assertion that this line of investigation warrants future research.
