Virtual Reality (VR) is increasingly used for collaborative learning in education. To navigate these virtual learning environments, people use avatars. Understanding how people perceive avatars, and treat them humanly, is crucial for designing inclusive virtual learning environments. This study examines the ways in which students attribute and detract mental states to avatars based on their characteristics, through the process of mind perception. To do so, six focus groups were conducted, during which students designed avatars that varied on two dimensions of mind perception: (1) agency or (2) experience. This was followed by group discussions on the characteristics of these avatars associated with agency and experience. Avatars were attributed low experience and agency, when designed as nonhuman entities (e.g., robots or animals), depicted with incomplete bodies, unrealistic appearances, negative appearances, and suggested side character roles. Conversely, avatars attributed with high experience and agency typically showcased human-like figures with unique personal styles, realistic representations, positive appearances, and convey a strong sense of individual identity and storyline centrality. This implies that VR developers, teachers and educationalists should take these characteristics into account to design inclusive collaborative learning environments.

Acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) has gained prominence due to increasing commercial demand and diverse application scenarios. Apart from professional fields like audio processing, AEC finds more use in daily scenarios like video conferencing. However, attaining superior speech quality frequently involves intricate deep learning models and significant computational resources, thereby impeding its widespread adoption. In order to reduce model size and enhance inference speed while maintaining speech quality, in this paper, we propose a new network architecture that combines pruning and quantization with densely connected neural network called PQ-DCNN. The proposed PQ-DCNN model utilizes encoder unstructured pruning (EUP) modules and decoder structured pruning (DSP) modules to reduce model size and accelerate model inference. Static quantization (SQ) module targets convolution layers, optimizing model resources by converting less critical weights and activation values from high to low precision. Results demonstrate a 66.78% reduction in model size and a 26.46% decrease in inference time, achieving an efficient AEC model design.

Agency, or the capacity for acting and exerting control, has been identified as a primary affordance of virtual reality (VR) for learning but has not yet been well-studied. In this study, we explore data derived from a larger study on collaborative learning in a VR environment to investigate how varied interactivity impacts sense of agency and subsequently whether agency is associated other affective dimensions of learning and learning outcomes. Factor analysis revealed two distinct constructs in assessing agency, over the VR and over their learning experience. Although the study conditions encouraged varied forms of interactivity, treatment conditions did not predict either agency construct. Results showed that both agency constructs were correlated with positive experiences in the VR. Moreover, we found that learning agency is linearly, negatively associated with learning outcomes. We find VR agency has a non-linear association. We discuss the implications of these findings in better understanding the complex relationships between VR design, learners' experiences of them, and how they affect learning. While more control over the environment may distract learners from retaining content, sense of agency may be important for engaging affective dimensions of learning.

Studies have shown the promising performance of transformer-based models in machine reading comprehension task. However, the performance of these models has not been explored extensively and deeply with Classical Arabic texts. To fill this gap, we first created two datasets: one for the Qur'anic text and the other for the Hadith Sharif, which are considered the main sources of Islam. We chose these two sources because they are more challenging. Their text requires a deep understanding of the content, and their terminology can have an interpretation that is different from that of other books. We then made them available to the research community. Second, we explored the performance of all the pre-trained transformer-based models available for the Arabic language when used as an answering model for the Hadith Sharif questions. Third, we studied the impact of further training the models on a Classical Arabic dataset, such as the Qur'an dataset and/or Modern Standard Arabic datasets. Finally, we selected the best-performing models and applied the ensemble method to their results. The model that achieved the best result was the ensemble of the CAMeL-BERT and CL-AraBERT, with a 0.187 EM, 0.711 F1 score, and 0.631 pRR.

In this study, the values of duration and formant of vowels inCantonese under the effect of focus are investigated. The key words are embedded in carrying sentences, and the durations of the vowel and nasal coda of the first syllable of the key word are investigated. The subjects are ten native speakers of Guangzhou Cantonese. Results show that duration of long vowels is longer than that of their short counterparts under all conditions examined. The effect of focus on the values of vowel formants is also analyzed. Our results show that vowel quality is so affected that the F1 frequency is increased significantly. There is a strong effect of focus on the realization of both duration and vowel quality in Cantonese.

Joint modeling or multi-task learning by applying speech and text encoders can improve the performance of end-to-end speech translation (E2E ST) with the help of large-scale speech recognition and text translation data in previous work. However, most existing methods require architectural changes of ST training, and the modality gap between speech and text makes it hard to encode both of them with a shared encoder. In this paper, we regard the joint modeling for speech translation and text translation as multilingual NMT modeling, using a single encoder for both speech and text processing. We empirically show that the modality gap can be effectively addressed by modeling modality-aware relative position encoding in the self-attention layer. Experiments on three benchmarks covering 23 languages show that joint modeling over internal/external speech recognition and text translation data, the performance of our single encoder method can lead to significant improvements on multiple ST tasks in both directions (from and to English) compared to the baselines.

Modern Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems aim to accurately convert spoken language into written text. However, they often face challenges when confronted with emotional speech, as traditional systems struggle to interpret the subtleties of emotional inflection. To overcome this challenge, a multi-task learning approach has been proposed that simultaneously addresses ASR and Speech Emotion Recognition (SER). With limited emotional speech resources, this approach has demonstrated improved recognition accuracy for the streaming ASR system when handling emotional utterances. Experiments conducted on both the MELD and SIMS datasets have shown a significant decrease in Word Error Rate (WER) and Character Error Rate(CER) when using the joint learning method compared to the optimized baseline. Specifically, the WER decreased by 1.27 on the MELD dataset and the CER by 0.58 on the SIMS dataset.

Immersive narratives offer rich, growing opportunities in the field of education, but the interdisciplinary process of writing and developing effective storylines is largely undetailed in current literature. For instance, how can a team efficiently create an experience that will immerse meteorology students in a hurricane narrative and allow them to make decisions related to storm safety learning objectives? To help guide practitioners, we contribute a scalable theory-based workflow, incorporating lessons learned through the creation of our three-part Introduction to Meteorology hurricane lab. We identify the critical involvement of four primary roles: a content expert, an instructional designer, a narrative lead, and a development lead;and we outline a recommended framework for the convergence of all four roles and responsibilities. Our result is an evolution of the ADDIE and R2D2 frameworks, incorporating Bloom's taxonomy for higher order learning. In this paper, we focus on the practical needs of our Assess, Design, and Reflect stages as they correspond to narrative development before technical assembly. We also share student feedback and demonstrate success in increasing self-efficacy in relation to learning objectives. Our hope is to inspire and support the creation of immersive narratives within other courses and universities.

The integration of development decisions and their impact on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) outcomes, along with the visualization of these decisions in product development, has emerged as a pivotal step toward advancing environmentally friendly product design. This study proposes a framework that integrates environmental considerations within the paradigm of Subject Orientation (SO) process modeling. The proposed framework is applied to a case study from the German research project AIBetOn3D. The framework demonstrates an approach to integrating ecological considerations into the product life cycle analysis. The ability of the framework to bridge traditional LCA methods with dynamic process modeling presents significant opportunities to advance sustainability practices within product design and development.
