The COVID-19 pandemic created the need to educate the public on both its transmission and protection measures. science has confirmed that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is primarily airborne and transmitted mainly through respiratory particles. More specifically, larger particles are called droplets and settle out of the air within seconds after following a short trajectory. Smaller particles are called aerosols and can remain suspended in the air from minutes to hours travelling long distances depending on air currents. An immersive Augmented Reality (AR) application was developed for Magic Leap 1 AR glasses with the aim to visualize as a first person experience the airborne COVID-19 transmission route, in addition to the distinct behaviors of droplets vs. aerosols. Forty-eight educators empirically evaluated the AR application in terms of learning outcomes. The study also investigated the role of the AR particle's color, i.e., red or blue spherical shapes, on knowledge. A significant learning gain on virus transmission was identified using the pre and post-test method, which also revealed that the color of particles did not significantly affect participants' test scores. This suggests that both colors, red and blue, are equally effective in representing virtually observed particles for significant learning gains. Learning outcomes were not correlated with gender, age or self-reported awareness of COVID-19 transmission. The participants also commented on the pleasant nature of the activity and highlighted its experiential nature, since it made an invisible phenomenon much easier to understand, in terms of its transmission and protection measures.

Modern Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems aim to accurately convert spoken language into written text. However, they often face challenges when confronted with emotional speech, as traditional systems struggle to interpret the subtleties of emotional inflection. To overcome this challenge, a multi-task learning approach has been proposed that simultaneously addresses ASR and Speech Emotion Recognition (SER). With limited emotional speech resources, this approach has demonstrated improved recognition accuracy for the streaming ASR system when handling emotional utterances. Experiments conducted on both the MELD and SIMS datasets have shown a significant decrease in Word Error Rate (WER) and Character Error Rate(CER) when using the joint learning method compared to the optimized baseline. Specifically, the WER decreased by 1.27 on the MELD dataset and the CER by 0.58 on the SIMS dataset.

Speech enhancement and separation in noisy reverberant environments are very challenging tasks. In this paper, we propose a speech enhancement and separation network, SESNet, for speech enhancement or speech separation in noisy reverberant environments, which is a multi-scale encoder-decoder architecture including a global-local feature extractor (GLFE). We also explored four kinds of Former blocks to be equipped in GLFE. We evaluate the performance of speech enhancement and speech separation on the VoiceBank+DEMAND and the WHAMR! datasets. The experimental results show that the SESNet has excellent performance for single- and multi-channel speech enhancement, and single-channel multi-speaker speech separation, keeping with a small model size.

The works applying meta-heuristic approaches for Arabic text is limited due to the complex of Arabic parsing and derivation rules, its rich morphology and complex grammatical rules. In this research we propose a new architecture for Arabic documents that applies the Grey Wolf Optimization used as a supervised learning approach by simulating the behavior of Gray Wolves in searching, encircling, and chasing their prey. The proposed method is divided into four phases: The term weighting phase, based on TF-IDF, and the term relevance frequency in documents and classes. The feature selection phase uses the Gray Wolf Algorithm to reduce features and identify relevant features for building the model. The next phase uses the Firey Algorithm to classify documents into several classes using some objective function. In the last phase, the researchers compare the performances of these approaches. The researchers experimented on two collections of reference documents and presented a comparative study on different systems of terms weighting. The experimental results allow us to deduce that our proposed approach based on Grey Wolf with Firefly Algorithm allows us to obtain better results than the other statistical algorithms.

The integration of education for sustainable development (ESD) into K-12 curriculum has become crucial in the global pursuit of a sustainable future. Education for climate change, one of the main ESD topics, needs to connect to student's real life and authentic learning. The objective of this study was to suggest the creation and advancement of climate change educational material utilizing eXtended reality (XR). The material was intended to utilize digital twin data related to carbon emissions and portray the level of carbon neutrality across the map of South Korea. The ESD content was crafted following the fundamental stages of the ADDIE instructional design model. Furthermore, this study provided a model for the development process of XR-based ESD content and explored its educational effectiveness.

Recent educational research emphasizes adaptivity in learning environments, driven by advancements in educational technology. Integrating adaptive learning with immersive media like augmented reality (AR) offers innovative possibilities, though feasibility varies. This scoping review explores state-of-the-art implementations of adaptive learning in AR. The systematic literature analysis aims to uncover examples ranging from concepts, developments, and evaluations, addressing specific research questions. The results with N = 32 included papers show that various AR and adaptive learning implementations can already be found in the literature, including content, support, and presentation adaptivity based on different data streams. A specific AR-based application includes the combination of location-based information with adaptive learning. Many of the described papers were still concepts or prototypes, so next steps will be to actually implement the systems in learning settings. For a more detailed analysis of the literature, a systematic review of these papers is planned.

Machine translation training with reinforcement learning has shown improvement in the translation quality. In previous works, the BLEU score was used as a reward function for reinforcement learning being the metric the most widely employed for evaluating machine translation models. Nevertheless, BLEU is not the only metric available to evaluate machine translation models. In this work, we use four different measures as reward functions, and we study their impact on the translation quality. We use these rewards to train a transformer model with reinforcement learning to perform translation between Arabic and English. Experimental results with the IWSLT dataset reveal that the GLEU score enhances the Arabic-to-English translation quality and the BLEU score improves the English-to-Arabic one.

This paper proposes ESTVocoder, a novel excitation-spectral-transformed neural vocoder within the framework of source-filter theory. The ESTVocoder transforms the amplitude and phase spectra of the excitation into the corresponding speech amplitude and phase spectra using a neural filter whose backbone is ConvNeXt v2 blocks. Finally, the speech waveform is reconstructed through the inverse short-time Fourier transform (ISTFT). The excitation is constructed based on the F0: for voiced segments, it contains full harmonic information, while for unvoiced segments, it is represented by noise. The excitation provides the filter with prior knowledge of the amplitude and phase patterns, expecting to reduce the modeling difficulty compared to conventional neural vocoders. To ensure the fidelity of the synthesized speech, an adversarial training strategy is applied to ESTVocoder with multi-scale and multi-resolution discriminators. Analysis-synthesis and text-to-speech experiments both confirm that our proposed ESTVocoder outperforms or is comparable to other baseline neural vocoders, e.g., HiFi-GAN, SiFi-GAN, and Vocos, in terms of synthesized speech quality, with a reasonable model complexity and generation speed. Additional analysis experiments also demonstrate that the introduced excitation effectively accelerates the model's convergence process, thanks to the speech spectral prior information contained in the excitation.

Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies are key drivers of digital transformation. This is why adopting I4.0 technologies is critical for companies to remain competitive. However, the adoption process requires careful planning, strategic decision-making, and a deep understanding of organizational needs and challenges. This paper aims to develop a comprehensive model that ensures the successful adoption of I4.0 technologies in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The data on which the model is based was collected using a variety of methods. Existing frameworks were reviewed by conducting a systematic literature review. The research group identified 25 fields of action that are categorized into the dimensions of Technology, Organization, Environment, and Expectations. A quantitative survey of 50 experts provided information on the relevance of these fields of action. Subsequently, meta-requirements and the resulting design principles were derived for the first prototype of the model. To gather insights on the prototype and research, six semi-structured expert interviews were conducted. The insights gained from the interviews will be taken into account in future research. The research provides SMEs with a model that addresses their specific technology adoption needs, facilitates their digital transformation, and enables them to realize the full potential of I4.0 technologies.

As the call for efficient assessment tools in Arabic language education grows, releasing an automatic scoring system to mark students' dissertations has attracted the scholars' attention. Such tools can considerably reduce teachers' time and effort spent on the scoring task due to the growing number of students in different schools and universities. Therefore, research in this field has been started since the second decade of the twenty-first century while various works of Automatic Essay Scoring (AES) have been done. However, most of these works have focused on languages like English and German, while working on other languages such as Arabic is still limited. This scoping review provides a comprehensive overview of automatic Arabic essay scoring following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines while using the most relevant online bibliographic databases, namely scienceDirect, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of science.
