Recursion, a fundamental concept in computer science and engineering, presents both challenges and opportunities for new learners. This paper explores innovative teaching methodologies and empirical insights from a study to enhance freshmen engineering students understanding of recursion. Additionally, we integrated a prototype study to illustrate the practical application of recursion in real-world scenarios, aiming to deepen student engagement and comprehension. A total of 57 students were divided into four groups (traditional learning - group 1, physical activities - group 2, recursion creator - group 3 and tower of Hanoi problem solving - group 4) consisting of 15,15,14, and 13 students, each taught with a different approach. For each of the groups, a pre-study, and a post-study assessment was taken. Results of this activity were observed and analyzed. It showed that using innovative approaches such as physical activities and the recursion creator improved the understanding of recursion, while the isolated problem solving was not as effective and impactful among the students.

This work is concerned about the privacy-preserving problem in reaching average consensus of continuous multi-agent systems. Given a network of integrators, some efficient protocols with integrable function based masking scheme are developed, where all agents communicate and then adjust their states by using the masked data so that their initial states are well protected from any external eavesdropper. Moreover, the study is also extended to cases with nonlinear couplings, which is further applied to the privacy-preserving phase synchronization of coupled Kuramoto oscillators. Our design is simple yet efficient for privacy-preservation, and brings more flexibility than some existing works. Numerical examples are presented for the purpose of demonstration and verification.

Ethical issues in computing have been a concern for longer than the past seven decades. Attempts to address these issues include raising awareness and guiding computing professionals. However, these efforts have not been sufficient to end ethical issues in computing. Teaching computing ethics to students of higher learning institutions is one of the recent trends that attempt to address the problem before professionals reach the job market. While teaching computer ethics is gaining momentum in the West and European countries, there is still no consensus on what and how to teach computing ethics. Furthermore, some countries, like South Africa are still in the infancy stages when it comes to teaching computer ethics. In an attempt to answer this study's research question, the critical analysis of related literature was kept central to the enquiry of this research. The use of active learning and the employ of cognitive psychology principles, to teach ethical theories to computing students, is proposed in this study. The approach is then introduced with an in-principle demonstration of how it works. The research shows that it is helpful to teach computer ethics with the guidance of cognitive psychology principles and that it may also contribute to universities producing ethical computing professionals.

The issue of comfort in school classrooms in Mexico has not been adequately addressed nor effectively managed with the available tools. This inadequacy stems from a lack of proper understanding regarding their implementation. This study conducts an analysis of the application of data mining techniques utilizing climatological variables within a classroom setting to identify patterns and behaviors that predict student comfort. A comparison of various data mining models is performed, and the most effective models are presented. The study employs a dataset encompassing variables such as Temperature, Humidity, Air Quality, Light, and Noise from a classroom environment. Patterns were identified and subsequently labeled into two clusters to develop a student comfort model. Two unsupervised learning models, hierarchical clustering and k-means, were utilized alongside supervised learning models including Neural Networks, Naive Bayes, Decision Trees, and K-Nearest Neighbors.

Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, requiring rapid and accurate detection for effective treatment. Segmentation of sulcal effacements in CT scan images is crucial for identifying acute strokes. In this paper, we propose a segmentation method that combines the Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm to enhance lesion identification efficiency. To achieve this, we developed a two-step approach integrating texturization and classification techniques to segment sulcal effacements in CT scan images. First, CT scan images are normalized and filtered to reduce noise and improve structural clarity, followed by segmentation to identify lesion areas. GLCM is then applied to each region of interest in the CT images to extract textural features such as contrast, correlation, energy, and homogeneity, which describe the properties of brain tissue. These features are used as input for the SVM algorithm, which classifies the effacements by determining the decision boundaries that separate different pixel groups in the feature space. The method is validated on a dataset annotated by experts, with segmentation performance evaluated using accuracy metrics. The results show that integrating GLCM and SVM improves the accuracy of sulcal effacement segmentation by up to 81% compared to traditional methods. The ROC curve of our model indicates good performance, demonstrating more precise detection of ischemic lesions.

Previous active inference accounts of emotion translate fluctuations in free energy to a sense of emotion, sometimes focusing exclusively on valence. However, in affective science, emotions are often represented as multidimensional. In this paper, we adapt a Circumplex Model of emotion to the Active Inference framework by demonstrating a mapping of free energy into valence and arousal, relating valence to utility less expected utility and arousal to the entropy of posterior beliefs. Under this formulation, we simulate artificial agents engaged in a search task and assign emotional states to them. We show that experimental manipulation of priors and object presence results in commonsense variability in these assignments.

Mental well-being is a critical aspect of overall health, particularly for college-going students, who face increasing levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ) has been a standard tool to assess mental health in multiple contexts, including educational settings. However, the self-reported nature of the OHQ leads to challenges like lack of engagement and the occurrence of biases. Conversely, gamification is a concept that has proven to be effective in increasing engagement. Therefore, this study proposes a novel approach by incorporating gamification strategies with OHQ to enhance user engagement and assess the mental well-being of college-going students. A gamified application called "The Mirror" has been developed using a 'research-through-design' approach. The study utilized a mixed-method methodology to compare the traditional OHQ with the gamified application in terms of user engagement and experience. Results from a pilot study indicate that the gamified OHQ increased engagement and provided a more enjoyable and personalized assessment experience compared to the traditional format. The findings suggest that integrating gamification into the OHQ can improve its efficacy as a self-guided questionnaire, making it more effective in assessing mental well-being. Future research with larger sample sizes and real-world testing is recommended to further refine the gamified application and validate its effectiveness.

With the rapid development of sensor technology and the proliferation of multi-source data, anomaly detection of multi-source time series data has become more and more important. In the past, anomaly detection methods often deal with the temporal information and spatial information contained in the data separately, which makes the spatio-temporal information in the data unable to be fully utilized by the model. To this end, this paper proposes a fusion of sensor embedding and temporal representation networks to solve this problem. In addition, we adopt graph neural network to better model multi-source heterogeneous data, and enhance the accuracy of anomaly detection by combining the double loss function of reconstruction loss and prediction loss. This approach not only facilitates the learning of normal behavior patterns from historical data but also enhances the model's predictive capabilities, allowing for more accurate anomaly detection. Experimental results on four multi-source sensor datasets show the superiority of the proposed method compared with the existing models. Further analysis show that the model enhances the interpretability of anomaly detection through the analysis of anomaly associated sensors.

Currently, the global warming problem affects every country worldwide, and Panama, as a signatory of the Paris Agreement, is no exception. In response to this urgent issue, this paper presents an innovative mobile application designed to monitor and control greenhouse gas emissions in Panamanian households, aiming to increase awareness and promote actionable change. The application development process involved a thorough requirements analysis, leading to its architectural design and subsequent development and validation. Based on the evaluation results, providing users with a clear visualization of their emissions encourages both individual and collective actions to reduce their carbon footprint, aligning with Panama's commitment to the Paris Agreement. While addressing local concerns, this effort contributes significantly to the global fight against climate change, showcasing the power of technological solutions in ecological conservation. This study's main contributions include the development of a user-centric mobile application for emission monitoring, an in-depth analysis of user engagement with environmental data, and a demonstration of the practical impact of technology-driven initiatives in fostering environmental stewardship in Panama. The work presented in this paper intersects theoretical research and practical technological application, offering a viable solution to a pressing global issue.

This paper outlines a method for solving the game problem of convergence of the generalized quasi-linear non-stationary system trajectory with the cylindrical terminal set whose body part depends on time. The method of resolving functions stands for the theoretical basis of investigation. We examine the situation when Pontryagin's condition, reflecting an advantage in control resources of one of the opposing sides, does not hold. Because of this, with the help of a certain scalar function, we construct the modified condition. This function is called the function of time dilation. Fulfillment of this condition provides an opportunity for the pursuer, based on the Filippov-Castaing theorems on measurable choice, to build control which guarantees successive solution of the problem at hand. In so doing, the technique of set-valued mapping and their selections is applied. The process of convergence consists of two parts - active and passive. Control of the first player is constructed in view of his opponent's control in the past, namely with a certain time delay depending on the function of time dilation. We obtain sufficient conditions for convergence in a finite time in the class of quasi-strategies, and, under additional conditions, in the class of stroboscopic strategies with delay.
