This study developed neural network models using deep learning with a range of 4 to 10 neurons to forecast the stochastic demand of a group of 20 clients over three years. The models were compared with traditional approaches such as simple moving average, weighted moving average, simple exponential smoothing, and double exponential smoothing. The results revealed that the deep learning model with 10 neurons was the most efficient, significantly reducing forecast errors compared to traditional methods and machine learning. This study highlights the ability of neural networks to capture complex patterns and adapt to stochastic variability, providing greater accuracy and consistency in demand prediction. These findings are crucial for decision making in environments with uncertain and variable demand, improving planning and resource management. Additionally, the deep learning model with 10 neurons showed an average reduction in mean absolute deviation by 15%, compared to 25% in traditional methods. This improvement in accuracy underscores the potential of neural networks in demand forecasting applications.

In June 2019, a programmer released an app that enabled users to digitally undress individuals in photographs. Shortly after its launch, the publication Vice reported that the programmer withdrew the application due to concerns about the potential negative consequences of its use. Nevertheless, within a few days, the app was downloaded by over 95,000 users. Deep Nude is among several applications that generate highly realistic imitations of a person's voice or body. These technological advancements do not alter prevailing social norms of patriarchy, as demonstrated by Deep Nude's initial focus on photos of women;the program would utilize neural networks to fabricate intimate body parts when presented with images of men. In the context of modern technology, women's bodies have become commodified images that can be weaponized against them. Feminist activists argue that while politicians express concern over the censorship of misleading political information, the most vulnerable victims of deepfake technology remain women. We contend that the most effective approach to assessing the implications of this phenomenon is through a political economy lens, specifically examining the processes of producing, distributing, and consuming deepfake pornography. Additionally, it is crucial to recognize that the conception of cyberspace as a libertarian utopia contributes significantly to the challenges authorities encounter in their efforts to protect potential victims from this form of gendered violence.

The integration of ROS (Robot Operating System) and Gazebo as a simulator is becoming increasingly vital in the field of robotic system design and development. Like any complex software, robotic software development requires disciplined processes to ensure efficiency and robustness. Despite the potent capabilities of ROS and Gazebo, current methodologies for developing robotic systems often omit a dedicated design phase, leading to the absence of a structured design process. This oversight can undermine the potential for developing sophisticated and reliable systems. In this paper, we argue for the adoption of the agent-based design paradigm as a systematic approach to robotic development. By employing this paradigm, we aim to leverage the modular and flexible architecture inherent in agent-based models, enhancing the capabilities of ROS and Gazebo.

Early cancer screening is crucial for both survival time and quality of life of patients, and the use of algorithmic techniques can provide rapid feedback to doctors on auxiliary screening results. Based on this, this paper proposes a tumor cell detection method based on the combination of Whale Optimization Improvement Algorithm and Support Vector Machine. For the problem of low accuracy of WOA-SVM algorithm under 10-fold cross-validation, the support vector machine recursive feature elimination method SVM-RFE is used to reduce the dimensionality of the original dataset, and then the WOA algorithm is improved by introducing the idea of dynamically increasing the high-quality operators and obtaining the MWOA algorithm. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method proposed in this article, multiple methods are designed for comparison. The example results show that the accuracy of the improved model proposed in this essay is improved by 5% compared with the traditional support vector machine algorithm model, and the accuracy is improved by about 0.5% compared with the WOA-SVM model, which verifies the effectiveness of the improved model in the field of tumor cell detection.

Research on wireless communication in water environments is gaining attention due to its relevance in enabling and supporting new applications under the Underwater Internet of Things (UIoT) umbrella. Visible Light Communication (VLC) is one of the emerging communication technologies with the potential to contribute to this domain, especially concerning direct communications from above the surface to underwater nodes. Although more traditional radio frequency (RF) communications are not suitable for air-to-water communications, VLC offers unique opportunities in this area. In this respect, this work presents a simulative study attempting to theoretically understand the performance of VLC systems in both underwater and air-to-water channels. We explore performance metrics including, link gain, time delay, and bit-error rate, while analyzing the optical signal interruption on the sea surface due to water level changes. The investigation offers preliminary results that shed light on the feasibility and challenges of effectively enabling cross-border air-water communication systems using VLC technologies.

Dry coffee beans are one of the main export products of the coffee productivity sector in Imbabura-Ecuador. The selection of these beans is done manually, which may lead to a decrease in product quality due to the limitations of the human factor, such as tiredness, the time needed, or different classification criteria. This work aims to detect morphological defects in dry coffee beans using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The collected dataset consists of 3276 images manually labelled by an expert between good and bad beans. Two architectures were selected for experimentation: SSD-MobileNet v2 and SSD-Resnet50, using the Tensorflow object detection API. The results show an accuracy of 91.65% and 83.07%, respectively. The best model offers higher precision than the obtained, on average, by a manual selection (78.9%), with a light weight of 26.5 MB and an inference speed of 2.3 fps. These results show a possibility of improving it to reach a practical application for small and medium producers and associations.

Network security is essential in the linked world of today because critical information systems are the target of an increasing number of malicious attacks and cyberthreats. Intrusion detection systems, or IDS, are primarily responsible for protecting networks against these types of attacks. Through the examination of network traffic characteristics, machine learning algorithms have developed into useful instruments for enhancing intrusion detection systems' capabilities. In this paper, we provide a comparison of several machine learning techniques for network intrusion detection. We investigate Decision Trees, K-Nearest Neighbors, AdaBoost, Gaussian Naive Bayes, Random Forest, Logistic Regression, and Gradient Boosting in identifying and categorizing network intrusions. For this study, we employ a publicly available network traffic dataset. We evaluate the effectiveness of each technique through multiple experiments, measuring its computational efficiency, accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. Our study illustrates the benefits and drawbacks of these algorithms as well as their suitability for use in different intrusion detection scenarios. This study also highlights the significance of selecting appropriate machine learning algorithms that are tailored to the properties of network traffic data to increase the resilience of network security infrastructures.

In widely used neural network-based collaborative filtering models, users' history logs are encoded into latent embeddings that represent the users' preferences. In this setting, the models are capable of mapping users' protected attributes (e.g., gender or ethnicity) from these user embeddings even without explicit access to them, resulting in models that may treat specific demographic user groups unfairly and raise privacy issues. While prior work has approached the removal of a single protected attribute of a user at a time, multiple attributes might come into play in real-world scenarios. In the work at hand, we present ADVXMULTVAE which aims to unlearn multiple protected attributes (exemplified by gender and age) simultaneously to improve fairness across demographic user groups. For this purpose, we couple a variational autoencoder (VAE) architecture with adversarial training (ADVMULTVAE) to support simultaneous removal of the users' protected attributes with continuous and/or categorical values. Our experiments on two datasets, LFM-2B-100K and ML-1M, from the music and movie domains, respectively, show that our approach can yield better results than its singular removal counterparts (based on ADVMULTVAE) in effectively mitigating demographic biases whilst improving the anonymity of latent embeddings.

Active packaging plays a crucial role in the preservation and quality maintenance of food products throughout the supply chain. Active packaging solutions have been developed to extend the shelf life of perishable foods, including antimicrobial films, oxygen scavengers and moisture absorbers. A newly synthesized silver(I) complex, underwent screening for antibacterial and antioxidant activities, demonstrating its potential as an antimicrobial and antioxidant agent for packaging applications. Plastic films were produced with or without the inclusion of Ag(mbtt)(3) using a twin-screw extruder and a blow film extruder. Two types of films were fabricated: a) an 80 mu m film of Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE), and b) an 80 mu m film comprising 99.5% LLDPE with 0.5% added complex. The LLDPE/Ag complex showed remarkable antimicrobial activity for the bacterium X. campestris compared to that which did not carry the complex. Both films were analyzed regarding water vapor permeability, thermal and mechanical properties and compared. In terms of thermal properties, the presence of Ag(mbtt)(3) led to a slight increase in the melting temperature (Tm, degrees C) during heating, as well as in the crystallization enthalpy (Delta Hc, J/g) of LLDPE. However, the mechanical properties of the films remained unaffected by the inclusion of the complex. Additionally, crystallinity and water vapor permeability showed no significant changes with the addition of the complex. These findings indicate that the synthesized complex could effectively serve as an active packaging agent in various applications, contributing to the extension of the shelf life and preservation of the quality of packaged products.

The public healthcare system in Chile, specifically the Servicio Salud Metropolitano Sur Oriente, confronts substantial challenges resulting from lengthy waiting lists for maxillofacial surgery, affecting over one million residents. At the Centro de Referencia de Salud Hospital Providencia Cordillera, the demand for maxillofacial surgery exceeds the current capacity, with only two surgeons available to treat approximately fourteen patients per week. Despite recent efforts to augment the surgical team to four maxillofacial surgeons, the weekly patient capacity increased only to twenty-one, still insufficient to address the backlog. The primary objective of this study is to optimize the scheduling of maxillofacial surgeries to maximize the number of patients treated, taking into account varying levels of complexity and priority, without requiring additional resources. The scheduling problem was formulated as a job-shop model, and the optimization was performed using integer linear programming. The distinctiveness of this approach lies in its application to a critical public healthcare issue in a specific country and a specialized field. The model was evaluated using a sample of 500 patients, and the results indicated a significant reduction in waiting times, from fifty weeks to twenty-eight weeks - a 44% decrease - achieved solely through improved scheduling. These findings underscore the potential of operational optimization to enhance healthcare service delivery within existing resource constraints.
