5G Standalone (SA) is the goal of the 5G evolution, which aims to provide higher throughput and lower latency than the existing LTE network. One of the main applications of 5G is the real-time distribution of Ultra High-Definition (UHD) content with a resolution of 4K or 8K. In Q2/2021, Advanced Info Service (AIS), the biggest operator in Thailand, launched 5G SA, providing both 5G SA/NSA service nationwide in addition to the existing LTE network. While many parts of the world are still in process of rolling out the first phase of 5G in Non-Standalone (NSA) mode, 5G SA in Thailand already covers more than 76% of the population. In this paper, UHD video will be a real-time live streaming via MPEG-DASH over different mobile network technologies with minimal buffer size to provide the lowest latency. Then, performance such as the number of dropped segments, MAC throughput, and latency are evaluated in various situations such as stationary, moving in the urban area, moving at high speed, and also an ideal condition with maximum SINR. It has been found that 5G SA can deliver more than 95% of the UHD video segment successfully within the required time window in all situations, while 5G NSA produced mixed results depending on the condition of the LTE network. The result also reveals that the LTE network failed to deliver more than 20% of the video segment within the deadline, which shows that 5G SA is absolutely necessary for low-latency UHD video streaming and 5G NSA may not be good enough for such task as it relies on the legacy control signal.

Intelligent Personal Assistants (IPA) are becoming an essential part of our life. The trend aiming at adopting IPA devices is driven by the uncountable applications enabled by the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its role in home automation. Actually, people are able to use, for example, voice-controlled IPA devices (e.g., Amazon Alexa) to interact and control things in their surrounding environment. Yet, to enable such interactions in an environment with multiple devices, the user has to configure each device. Besides, it is not possible to apply the same operation in a specific environment used for a short period, such as a hotel room, i.e., for security reasons: the owner of a hotel cannot permit access to the devices from their customer as it may be risky. To deal with such a limitation, the adoption of a Software-Defined approach, such as Software-Defined I/O (SDI/O), is a relevant approach to decouple the access to IoT resources from their management duties. In the case of accommodation facilities, such as a hotel room, to connect an IPA to IoT devices, a set of repeated configurations has to be performed. This paper proposes "Everywhere IPA" (EIPA), an approach relying on the Software-Defined I/O approach to automatize the configuration of IoT devices.

In this paper, we consider a discrete-time information-update system, where a service provider can proactively retrieve information from the information source to update its data and users query the data at the service provider. One example is crowdsensing-based applications. In order to keep users satisfied, the application desires to provide users with fresh data, where the freshness is measured by the Age-of-Information (AoI). However, maintaining fresh data requires the application to update its database frequently, which incurs an update cost (e.g., incentive payment). Hence, there exists a natural tradeoff between the AoI and the update cost at the service provider who needs to make update decisions. To capture this tradeoff, we formulate an optimization problem with the objective of minimizing the total cost, which is the sum of the staleness cost (which is a function of the AoI) and the update cost. Then, we provide two useful guidelines for the design of efficient update policies. Following these guidelines and assuming that the aggregated request arrival process is Bernoulli, we prove that there exists a threshold-based policy that is optimal among all online policies and thus focus on the class of threshold-based policies. Furthermore, we derive the closed-form formula for computing the long-term average cost under any threshold-based policy and obtain the optimal threshold. Finally, we perform extensive simulations using both synthetic data and real traces to verify our theoretical results and demonstrate the superior performance of the optimal threshold-based policy compared with several baseline policies.

In recent years, exploring autonomous vehicles has become an emerging research topic due to the massive opportunities to deploy deep learning models in real-world transportation applications. Although deep learning models have been widely applied to microscopic traffic simulations (MTS), they are limited to offline prescriptive analysis or predictive analysis. However, dynamics of a traffic environment frequently change over time;little research has been focused on dynamically updating deep learning models parameters in response to real-time traffic conditions. Further, for dynamic model parameter updates, it is difficult to preserve privacy since raw data is transmitted to the server for model updating (training). In this paper, we present a federated multimodal microscopic traffic simulation (FedMMTS) framework that incorporates federated learning to preserve data privacy and applies multimodal data analytics to achieve a more accurate sensing of the environment. We present preliminary experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of this framework in a microscopic traffic environment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that incorporates federated learning and data multimodality in MTS environments.

Generating paths of a mobile device in indoor space by sensing its Bluetooth RSSI value is challenging but has real-world applications. Although Bluetooth RSSI suffers from different factors that limit its usability, this research shows that it can still be used to detect mobility and, over a duration of time, can be used to form paths. This poster presents algorithms that can create a path of a moving mobile device by sensing its RSSI values over time and then presents early results of the algorithm's effectiveness while tracking health practitioners' movement within a community care clinic setting.

Music recommendations are normally based on a users prior artist and genre preference, or based on a similar users preference. This may result in recommendations for users being limited to subsections of artists and sub-genres, rather than offering an exploration of different genres that are similar to the user's vocal preferences. In this work, we propose a federated learning-based approach that scalably tunes music clusters to accurately describe users' preferences in a particular genre. It uses deep clustering on frequency sets and mel-spectrograms of songs. It can improve song recommendations based on the user's musical tastes.

The fast integration of 5G communication, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies is envisioned to enable Next Generation networks (NGNs) for diverse smart services and user-defined applications for Smart Cities. However, it is still challenging to build a scalable and efficient infrastructure that satisfies the various performance, security, and management demands by heterogeneous IoT applications across multiple administrative domains. This paper presents a dynamic edge resource federation architecture, which integrates the concept of network slicing (NS) and blockchain to improve scalability, dynamicity, and security for multi-domain IoT applications. A NS-enabled dynamic edge resource federation framework adopts intelligent mechanisms to support efficient multi-domain service coordination that satisfies diverse Quality of Service (QoS) and security requirements. We propose a Hierarchical Integrated Federated Ledger (HIFL), which aims to guarantee decentralized security and privacy-preserving properties in multi-domain resource orchestration and service re-adjustment. As a secure-by-design solution, HIFL is promising to support efficient, trust and secured end-to-end IoT services. A preliminary proof-of-concept prototype has been implemented for comparing intra- and inter-domain performance expectations.

A node equipped with a multi-beam antenna can achieve a throughput of up to m times as compared to a single-beam antenna, by simultaneously communicating on its m noninterfering beams. However, the existing multi-beam medium access control (MAC) schemes can achieve concurrent data communication only when the transmitter nodes are locally synchronized. Asynchronous packet arrival at a multi-beam receiver node would increase the node deafness and MAClayer capture problems, and thereby limit the data throughput. This paper presents an asynchronous multi-beam MAC protocol for multi-hop wireless networks, which makes the following enhancements to the existing multi-beam MAC schemes (i) A windowing mechanism to achieve concurrent communication when the packet arrival is asynchronous, (ii) A smart packet processing mechanism which reduces the node deafness, hidden terminals and MAC-layer capture problems, and (iii) A channel access mechanism which decreases resource wastage and node starvation. Our proposed protocol also works in the networks that deploy the nodes equipped with single-beam as well as multi-beam antennas. Simulation results demonstrate a superior performance of our proposed protocol.

The unprecedented increase of heterogeneous devices connected to the Internet, along with tight requirements of future networks, including 5G and beyond, poses new design challenges to network infrastructures. Collaborative computing, caching and communication paradigm together with artificial intelligence have the potential to enable the Next-Generation Networking Infrastructure (NGNI) that is needed to fulfill the stringent requirements of emerging applications. In this paper, we propose the SCORING project vision for reshaping the current network infrastructure towards an NGNI acting as a truly distributed, collaborative, and pervasive system that enables the execution of application-specific tasks and the storage of the related data contents in the Cloud-Edge-Mist continuum with high QoS/QoE guarantees.
