Cellular network performance does not cleanly generalize. A variety of factors, such as location, terrain, signal quality and network load, affect the performance of services delivered over LTE networks. As a result, the presence of LTE coverage does not always equate to usable service;coverage can be of poor quality, or it can be congested and difficult to access. Given that reliance on LTE networks for Internet connectivity has exploded, it is critical to understand the quality of experience for applications delivered over these networks in a variety of scenarios. To this end, we develop a robust measurement suite that we use to conduct a unique measurement campaign in tribal, rural, congested urban and uncongested urban regions, representing a variety of under-provisioned, congested, and well-provisioned operational LTE networks run by four major providers. Our analysis confirms that the performance of LTE networks in tribal and rural areas is typically worse than even heavily congested urban networks. More specifically, in the regions that we study, LTE networks in under-provisioned (tribal/rural) areas have 9x poorer video streaming quality, 10x higher video start-up delay, undergo more than 10x the number of resolution switches, and lead to more than 2x slower Web browsing experience as compared to urban deployments. We show that throughput and latency are 11x and 3x worse in tribal and rural locations, despite identical LTE carrier subscription plans.

In this paper, we present a zero-touch network orchestrator to autonomously provide an end-to-end orchestration platform to orchestrate, monitor, and profile network services. Subsequently, we describe a new method to autonomously generate performance profiles of these network services and compute optimum resources required to meet the given KPIs and performance targets.

Managing cache content at the edge is one of the many use cases of 5G-and-beyond networks. However, increasing the density of Edge Data Centers (EDCs) to service requests is a crucial problem. To overcome this problem, recent research has advanced mobile device architecture paradigms and the content caching in a Mobile Device Cloud (MDC). These two service locations (EDCs and MDC) are registered with the Mobile Network Operator (MNO), enabling the MNO to control the content placement for profit maximization. As the user demands for content items are directly related to the QoS perceived by the user, it is important to understand the future popularity of the content items and to place them appropriately. Additionally, privacy issues have increased over time because of sensitive user information being divulged at the MDC. To preserve privacy, a branch of machine learning called Federated Learning (FL) can train machine learning models leaving the data in the end user devices. The paper contributions are as follows: (1) We introduce an FL algorithm called FedCo, that trains a deep-neural network (DNN) to predict the user demand of a specific content, so as to manage the content files placement at EDC and MDC sites. (2) We then conduct a theoretical evaluation of user demand behavior via prospect theory to justify revenue maximization for an MNO. (3) We show numerically via a multimedia content delivery use-case how the proposed model compares favorably with two state-of-the-art designs.

Decentralized learning (DL) allows IoT devices to exchange local model updates with only their neighboring devices instead of sending their model updates to a central server for aggregation. However, current DL frameworks cannot support the emerging Social IoT (SIoT) paradigm since SIoT devices exchange model updates with only social neighbors based on specific social relations (e.g., ownership and parental relationships). Conversely, sharing model updates with non-social neighbors can improve training performance but may violate social relations. Differential privacy (DP) is thus engaged with DL to ensure data security, while excessive devices engaging DP may downgrade the training performance. However, most research neglects the effect of neighbor selection for each device based on social networks, physical networks, and DP. Therefore, in this paper, we explore the non-trivial relation among the above factors to present a DL framework, DeepPrivacy, and prove its convergence rate and DP. Then, we formulate a novel optimization problem, CoTOPO, to lind an efficient communication topology' for model updates exchange among devices in DL, and propose an algorithm, AutoTag, for CoTOPO. Last, experiment results manifest that DeepPrivacy and AutoTag combined outperform the state of the art in terms of convergence rate and physical training time significantly on CIFARIO and FMNIST.

The Narrowband Internet Of Things, better known by the acronym NB-IoT, is spearheading 3GPP's effort to address the massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) segment of 5G. With 103 deployments in more than 40 countries, NB-IoT's performance in terms of cell capacity and coverage is well established. However, the performance it can offer in terms of battery life, a foundational requirement of IoT, has received little attention. In this paper, we introduce the first theoretical model based on the M/D/H/K queues capable of evaluating the energy performance of NB-IoT in advanced cell scenarios defined by a coverage distribution, a payload uplink and downlink size, and an incoming communication rate. After using the values computed by 3GPP for single-terminal cells to demonstrate its accuracy, we use our model to evaluate the NB-IoT's energy performance. Our analysis reveals that a) Early Data Transmission, originally designed for improving the latency and connection density, can also significantly improve the energy performance, and b) When the load in multi-terminal cell settings increases, the terminal battery lifetime collapses. Leveraging our model, we introduce a solution requiring no changes to the standard and show that it significantly improves the terminal battery life.

Modern Industrial Control Systems (ICSs) allow remote communication through the Internet using industrial protocols that were not designed to work with external networks. To understand security issues related to this practice, prior work usually relies on active scans by researchers or services such as Shodan. While such scans can identify publicly open ports, they cannot identify legitimate use of insecure industrial traffic. In particular, source-based filtering in Network Address Translation or Firewalls prevent detection by active scanning, but do not ensure that insecure communication is not manipulated in transit. In this work, we compare Shodan-only analysis with largescale traffic analysis at a local Internet Exchange Point (IXP), based on sFlow sampling. This setup allows us to identify ICS endpoints actually exchanging industrial traffic over the Internet. Besides, we are able to detect scanning activities and what other type of traffic is exchanged by the systems (i.e., IT traffic). We find that Shodan only listed less than 2% of hosts that we identified as exchanging industrial traffic, and only 7% of hosts identified by Shodan actually exchange industrial traffic. Therefore, Shodan does not allow to understand the actual use of insecure industrial protocols on the Internet and the current security practices in ICS communications. We show that 75.6% of ICS hosts still rely on unencrypted communications without integrity protection, leaving those critical systems vulnerable to malicious attacks.

Smart advertising creates awareness about some offer with a more direct, personalized and interactive focus. In this area, AROUND is a social network aimed at providing smart advertising to suggest appealing business to their customers and friends. The AROUND system is supported by a sophisticated recommender system, which considers not only the customers historical behaviours, but also their current mood and accurate location. In such smart recommendation systems, the response time for the personalized advertising is critical for a successful users' quality of experience. In this research work we first evaluate the current performance of the AROUND system in terms of processing and communication times considering that, nowadays, this social network has more than 3 million users. The current implementation of the system relies on the deployment of a network of beacons, and uses a domestic cloud provider as the main infrastructure. We show that when the number of concurrent requests becomes too high, the response time faces some limitations. In order to address this issue, we discuss several alternatives, and propose the use of an edge-based strategy as a solution for fast response time. In the experimental section, we measure the performance of the AROUND system, both in our current infrastructure at the cloud and with an edge-based approach, and show the additional advantages of leveraging the edge-based strategy even in the case of overloading the cloud capacity.

This paper proposes Trailnet, a deep reinforcement learning approach to predict the output port (of a router) for an IP packet based on its destination IP address. Trailnet attempts to replace the forwarding table at an IP router with a computational model. To optimally learn each router's forwarding decisions, we propose to train the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) of Trailnet with value iteration and stochastic gradient descent. Through the value iteration algorithm, Trailnet estimates the cost of IP packet forwarding along different ports of a router and eventually selects a port that optimizes a cost function. We evaluate the generalization capability of the ANN on two sufficiently large service provider's network topologies containing millions of IP addresses. Our evaluations show that Trailnet achieves high accuracy and fast inference time for predicting the correct output ports for incoming IP packets. Our results support the claim of replacing forwarding tables and distributed protocols (for computing shortest paths) with a computation model while operating at a high line rate in IP routers.

Connectivity is an important property of fully distributed networks. The greater the number of node-disjoint connections between two nodes, the greater the effort an attacker has to make to reliably disconnect them. In this paper, we propose and evaluate "Consecutive s-Cliques" (CSC), which extends the routing tables in fully distributed networks managed by the Kademlia protocol with Harary graph structures. Harary graphs are undirected graphs that can be parameterized to contain the minimum number of edges necessary for being s-vertexconnected. The goal is to reach a greater connectivity than a Kademlia overlay network would typically have for a comparable routing table size, without significantly impeding the network performance in terms of routing, data storage, and data retrieval.

With the emergence and development in 5G cellular systems and ultra dense networks, recent years have witnessed a surge of interest in Dense Wireless Sensor Network (DWSN) in academia and industry. Although many existing works have explored the Steiner tree problem (STP) like multicast and topology design in WSN scenarios, new challenges introduced by growing node number and redundant links receive much less attention yet. The complexity of the topology usually makes algorithms that find the optimal solution unacceptable in terms of running time. Meanwhile, other approximate algorithms with lower time complexity cause too much performance loss. In this paper, we propose a physarum-based pre-processing algorithm called PBA for boosting up a traditional algorithm that can find STP's optimal solution. The proposed algorithm could select crucial edges and vertices quickly by imitating the physarum's foraging process. Our algorithm could eliminate edges and vertices irrelevant to the optimal solution by 80% and 50% in the original graph, respectively. This simplified graph produced by PBA is used in the traditional algorithm for obtaining the final result. PBA could also be transformed into a distributed version with minor changes for large-scale topology. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can shorten the original algorithm's running time by one to two orders of magnitude with less than 5% performance loss in general.
