Due to the limitation of public school systems, many students pursue private supplementary tutoring for improving their academic performance. Different from public schools, the private online education provides diverse courses and satisfy differentiated demands of the students. Students' behavior and performance in online supplementary learning are relevant to not only personal attributes, but also some factors such as city levels, grades and family situation. Existing studies mostly rely on panel survey/questionnaire data and few studied online private tutoring. In this paper, with 11,392 anonymous K-12 students' 3-year learning data from one of the world's largest online extra-curricular education platforms, we uncover students' online learning behaviors and infer the impact of students' home location, family socioeconomic situation and attended school's reputation/rank on the students' private tutoring course participation and learning outcomes. Further analysis suggests that such impact may be largely attributed to the inequality of access to educational resources in different cities and the inequality in family socioeconomic status. Finally, we study the predictability of students' performance and behaviors using machine learning algorithms with different groups of features, showing students' online learning performance can be predicted with MAE< 10%.

In this paper, we propose a scheme for representing semantic metadata of IoT devices in compact identifiers and DNS names to enable simple discovery and search with standard DNS servers. Our scheme defines a binary identifier as a sequence of bits: a Context to use and several bits of fields corresponding to semantic properties specific to the Context. The bit string is then encoded as base32 characters and registered in DNS. Furthermore, we use the compact semantic DNS names to offer support for search and discovery. We propose to take advantage of the DNS system as the basic functionality for querying and discovery of semantic properties related to IoT devices. We have defined three specific Contexts for hierarchical semantic properties as well as logical and geographical locations. For this last part, we have developed two prototypes for managing geo-identifiers in LoRa networks, one based on Node and the Redis in-memory database, the other one based on the CoreDNS server.

This paper presents the design and performance evaluation of a new machine learning-based transport protocol called Reinforcement learning-based retransmission Control Protocol (RCP). Unlike prior transport protocols that aim at either providing guaranteed end-to-end delivery, e.g., TCP, or minimizing the end-to-end delay, e.g., UDP, RCP aims to optimize any achievable combination of these objectives, as specified by an application layer utility function. The utility function in this paper can be quite general, and can capture a combination of delay and packet delivery metrics. RCP can be thought of as an intelligent middle-ground between UDP and TCP, that maps application layer objectives subject to what is learned about the network state. It is window-based like TCP, but retransmissions are decided based on a reinforcement learning algorithm to maximize the application layer utility function. RCP employs a reinforcement learning method, double Q-Learning network, to learn the best strategy in real-time from a history of packet transmission/re-transmission experiences. No assumption on the shape of the utility function is needed. RCP is evaluated under a wide range of network settings, and is found to outperform UDP, TCP, and ARQ for almost all settings. The performance is also evaluated with respect to TCP-friendliness and network stability.

Mobile crowdsensing has been regarded as an efficient paradigm for performing large-scale sensing tasks. In this paper, we consider a specific scenario, where the crowdsensing platform needs to collect the sensing data in a requested time window (RTW), and mobile users would bid for their sensing time windows. This process could be modeled as a reverse auction. In this context, the Vickrey-Clark-Groves (VCG) mechanism becomes a generic auction mechanism that uniquely guarantees both truthfulness and efficiency, but it is vulnerable to false-name bidding and generates high overpayment for the platform. Thus in this paper, we design the core-selecting mechanism to solve VCG's vulnerability and improve the revenue. We demonstrate that our proposed mechanism achieves the properties of RTW feasibility, efficiency, individual rationality, and false-nameproofness. Besides, to minimize the incentives of users to deviate from truthful-telling, we adopt a VCG-nearest payment rule and propose an efficient algorithm called CCG-TWC. Our extensive simulation results show that the core-selecting mechanism could reduce VCG's overpayment by about 10%.

At present, more than a billion closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras are watching the world. These cameras garner a lot of visual information that is often processed and stored in remote and centralized cloud servers. Multiple occasions have revealed that this traditional approach is plagued with security and privacy breaches. The breaches could be the interception of raw videos while in transit to distant surveillance analytics centers (SAC), infiltration to cameras and network video records (NVR), or abuse of cameras and stored videos. Hence, the traditional video surveillance system (VSS) cannot guarantee the protection of the privacy of individuals caught on CCTV cameras. Therefore, this paper proposes a Secure and Privacy-preserving Stored surveillance video sharing (SePriS) mechanism for authorized users/nodes based on blockchain (BC), smart contracts, and the enciphering of video frames using DAB, a mechanism developed based on discrete cosine transform (DCT), advanced encryption standard (AES), and a block shuffling (BS) algorithm. The BC-based solution creates an environment auspicious for creating decentralized, reliable SACs and storage sites with secure and privacy-aware sharing of stored surveillance videos across SAC nodes and by law enforcers, police departments, and courts securely connected to the SAC nodes. The experiments and analyses validate that the proposed BC-based SePriS solution achieves the design purpose.

Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) and Decentralized File Storages (DFS) are becoming increasingly used to create common, decentralized and trustless infrastructures where participants interact and collaborate in Peer-to-Peer interactions. A prominent use case is represented by decentralized data marketplaces, where users are consumers and providers at the same time, and trustless interactions are required. However, data in DLTs and DFS are usually unstructured and there are no efficient mechanisms to query a certain type of data for the search in the market. In this paper, we propose the use of a Distributed Hash Table (DHT) as a layer on top of DLTs where, once the data are acquired and stored in the ledger, these can be searched through multiple keyword based queries, thanks to the lookup functionalities offered by the DHT. The DHT network is a hypercube overlay structure, organized for an efficient processing of multiple keyword-based queries. We provide the architecture of such solution for a decentralized data marketplace and an analysis based on a simulation that proves the viability of the proposed approach.

Mobile edge computing pushes computationally-intensive services closer to the user to provide reduced delay due to physical proximity. This has led many to consider deploying deep learning models on the edge - commonly known as edge intelligence (EI). EI services can have many model implementations that provide different QoS. For instance, one model can perform inference faster than another (thus reducing latency) while achieving less accuracy when evaluated. In this paper, we study joint service placement and model scheduling of EI services with the goal to maximize Quality-of-Servcice (QoS) for end users where EI services have multiple implementations to serve user requests, each with varying costs and QoS benefits. We cast the problem as an integer linear program and prove that it is NP-hard. We then prove the objective is equivalent to maximizing a monotone increasing, submodular set function and thus can be solved greedily while maintaining a (1 - 1/epsilon)-approximation guarantee. We then propose two greedy algorithms: one that theoretically guarantees this approximation and another that empirically matches its performance with greater efficiency. Finally, we thoroughly evaluate the proposed algorithm for making placement and scheduling decisions in both synthetic and real-world scenarios against the optimal solution and some baselines. In the real-world case, we consider real machine learning models using the ImageNet 2012 data-set for requests. Our numerical experiments empirically show that our more efficient greedy algorithm is able to approximate the optimal solution with a 0.904 approximation on average, while the next closest baseline achieves a 0.607 approximation on average.

The ultra-fast speed and massive capacity in 5G networks push huge amounts of data to networks. With network function virtualization, these data will go through multiple service functions (SFs) and big data processing/analysis. As a result, the processing delay from such SFs and data processing/analysis can significantly impact the delivery of latency-sensitive services. To reduce the processing delay, network function parallelism techniques are introduced to allow multiple SFs running parallelly for the same request. In this work, we study how to apply network function parallelism into SF chaining and embedding to optimize the latency. When physical nodes have unlimited computing resource, we propose the mixed integer programming based parallelism-aware SFC optimization (MIP-PS) algorithm. Our analysis proves the proposed MIP-PS is integer-approximation. When physical nodes have limited computing resource, we propose the latency factor based parallelism-aware SFC optimization (LF-PS) algorithm. Our extensive simulations demonstrate that our proposed schemes outperform the approaches extended directly from the existing work.

Exercise intensity monitoring of physical activities has drawn increasingly attention as the awareness of the exercise intensity is of great importance for a person to achieve optimal training outcomes. For example, over-training could lead to excessive fatigue and loss of motivation for exercise. Traditional exercise intensity monitoring systems utilize GPS data to track the user's intensity of cardio activities through his/her position and speed. Such systems however become invalid for indoor exercises on stationary fitness equipments such as the treadmill or exercise bike. Recent work in using body-worn sensors to track the user's heart rate for exercise intensity monitoring usually involves additional wearable sensors which are only available on some particular fitness equipments, and thus are hard to be used in all occasions. This work presents an exercise intensity monitoring system which is capable of detecting a person's exercise intensity via smartphones. Our system exploits the off-the-shelf smartphone and its headphone to capture the user's breathing sound. Given the captured acoustic data, our system performs data pre-processing to remove the environmental noise and identify the non-silent acoustic frames based on the signal energy. Our system then conducts breathing event detection for non-silent frames, and further calibrates the detection results by utilizing the high correlation between breathing cycles to improve the detection accuracy. Moreover, our system can estimate the person's exercise intensity based on features extracted from the frames which contain breathing sound. Our experiments involving 9 subjects over four-month time period demonstrate that our proposed exercise intensity monitoring system is robust and accurate in both indoor and outdoor environments.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionising nearly every aspect of modern life, playing an ever greater role in both industrial and domestic sectors. The increasing frequency of cyber-incidents is a consequence of the pervasiveness of IoT. Threats are becoming more sophisticated, with attackers using new attacks or modifying existing ones. Security teams must deal with a diverse and complex threat landscape that is constantly evolving. Traditional security solutions cannot protect such systems adequately and so researchers have begun to use Machine Learning algorithms to discover effective defence systems. In this paper, we investigate how one approach from the domain of evolutionary computation - grammatical evolution - can be used to identify cyberattacks in IoT environments. The experiments were conducted on up-to-date datasets and compared with state-of-the-art algorithms. The potential application of evolutionary computation-based approaches to detect unknown attacks is also examined and discussed.
