The virtualization and software-definition of network functions, controls, and applications enhance performance and operation costs while bringing new value to the infrastructures. However, due to the stateless, gossipy, centralized, periodic, and tardy nature, the network control and management approaches in Software-Defined Networking (SDN), such as the current OpenFlow Discovery Protocol (OFDP), pose scalability, latency, and reliability challenges. This paper designs a novel Centrality-Aware Multitemporal (CAMEL) discovery protocol for SDN to enhance the centralized discovery mechanism's scalability and latency issues. We facilitate multiple discovery timers for each target according to the significance instead of using a single timer for the entire network. CAMEL generalizes the significance measurement for various network topologies by using the centrality models. We combine the normalized degree and betweenness centrality values to find an unbiased impact factor of each node. Applying the identified significance to a multitemporal discovery mechanism, CAMEL reduces network impact by decreasing the discovery delay to the significant nodes and enhances control message efficiency by lowering the discovery frequency to the less significant targets. We have implemented CAMEL on the RYU controller. The experimental results validate that CAMEL improves discovery message efficiency, makes the control traffic less bursty, and enhances the network service quality by reducing discovery delay to the significant nodes.

Integrating Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) network enables all user equipment on the ground to receive MEC services with low service latency relatively. Service request scheduling can realize the effective utilization of various resources of the network and the system, and guarantee the performance of the network system. Service deployment and service request scheduling are closely related. Therefore, the joint service deployment and service request scheduling problem (SDRS) is modeled as an optimization problem, which is a mixed integer linear programming problem. Our goal is to reduce the proportion of unsatisfactory services while minimizing the transmission cost when deploying services on LEO-MEC nodes, and to use the resolved decision variables to dispatch requests and deploy services. In order to avoid overloading of some nodes and underutilization of other nodes, which would cause the waste of satellite system resources, we modified the MILP and imposed an upper limit on the load that each satellite node can support. The simulation results show that, compared with the baseline mechanism, our proposed mechanism can achieve better performance in terms of service user ratio and computing resource utilization. The newly proposed MILP variant with load balancing (SDRS-LB) has a lower load than the SDRS scheme.

The demand for streaming media and live video conferencing is at peak and expected to grow further, thereby the need for low-cost streaming services with better quality and lower latency is essential. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel peer-to-peer (P2P) live streaming platform, called fybrrStream, where a logical mesh and physical tree i.e., hybrid topology-based approach is leveraged for low latency streaming. fybrrStream distributes the load on participating peers in a hierarchical manner by considering their network bandwidth, network latency, and node stability. fybrrStream costs as low as the cost of just hosting a light-weight website and the performance is comparable to the existing state-of-the-art media streaming services. We evaluated and tested the proposed fybrrStream platform with real-field experiments using 50+ users spread across India and results obtained show significant improvements in the live streaming performance over other schemes.

In the past two decades, several applications have been proposed for Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs). Some of these applications, such as habitat monitoring, active volcano monitoring, and toxic gas detection, exclude the involvement of human presence because the environments are either dangerous, inaccessible, or too extensive. The scope of these applications can be extended if the ground networks are assisted by a network of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Paramount to this is the stability of the wireless links the UAVs establish with the ground nodes. Lossy and unstable links are costly to maintain the UAVs may exhaust their batteries prematurely. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the stability of aerial-to-ground links and propose a stochastic model to predict link quality as a function of lime. The model can be used to estimate goodput, determine mission duration, and estimate short-term link connection and disconnection durations.

With online social networks (OSNs), people are exposed to tons of fake information or misleading posts. Celebrities sometimes intentionally create misleading posts in OSNs to guide people for commercial or marketing purposes. The intentional phrases from such posts can affect the online rating and even lead to a frenzy shopping. That's part of the reasons that the top social media influencers are targeted by merchants to help promote products. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires that all sponsored posts must be clearly disclosed. However, many influencers do not follow the FTC rules. As a result, people may be misled by the undisclosed sponsorship. In this study, for the first time, we explore the credibility of posts on Instagram and analyze if an influencer complies with the FTC requirements. We build an effective Undisclosed Sponsored Post Detection (USPD) framework based on an ensemble of machine learning classifiers. The USPD framework consists of three main processes: (i) feature extraction, (ii) model construction and (iii) credibility and integrity analysis. Our analysis and experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework can achieve a high accuracy of 83% for undisclosed sponsored post detection. The proposed framework also takes advantages of the text, user and image features in OSN posts to effectively analyze how much an influencer can be trusted.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being widely exploited for various applications, e.g., traverse to collect data from ground sensors, patrol to monitor key facilities, move to aid mobile edge computing. We summarize these UAV applications and formulate an abstract problem, namely the general waypoint-based PoI-visiting problem, aiming at minimizing flight energy consumption, which is critical due to its limited onboard storage capacity. In our problem, we pay special attention to the energy consumption for turning and switching operations on flight planning, which is usually ignored in the literature but plays an important role in practical UAV flights. We propose a novel method that uses specially designed graph parts to model the turning and switching cost and thus transfer the problem into a classic graph problem, i.e., traveling salesman problem, which can be efficiently solved. Finally, we evaluate our proposed algorithm by simulations. The results show it costs less than 107% of the optimal minimum energy consumption for small scale problem and costs only half as much energy as a naive algorithm for large scale problem.

Eye tracking is playing an important role in many applications including human-computer interaction and behavior study. However, the existing approaches have at least one of the following limitations: (i) dedicated devices such as infrared camera and eye-tracker are required;(ii) complex calibration process is involved;(iii) substantial computing resources are consumed;(iv) users suffer from the risk of privacy leakage. To address the above limitations, we propose a Heatmap-based Eye Tracking (HETrack) system. One of the key challenges in our system is to design a lightweight model for fine-grained tracking when the computing resources of device is limited. Also, it is necessary to protect user privacy in such a system. To address the above challenging issues, the proposed system consists of the following processes. First, when users randomly look at the screen of the device, HETrack obtains the raw image containing facial information. Then, we design a neural network model and train it with federated learning. The model can map the image to heatmap that implies the possibility of the user's gaze position on the screen. Finally, HETrack can intercept the real-time video stream into frames, and employ the trained model to generate the heatmap of current frame for gaze estimation. We implement HETrack based on a Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) camera and conduct extensive experiments to evaluate its performance. Our HETrack system only requires once calibration;whereas, the state-of-the-art work proposed by Google requires 3 similar to 5 times calibration on average. Unlike previous approaches that transmit raw image data to a central server, in our HETrack system, only parameters are transmitted, thereby well protecting the user's privacy. Experimental results demonstrate that the average distance error of estimated gaze point is 3cm, which is compatible with the state-of-the-art methods.

The emerging LoRa technology is quickly becoming the de facto standard for Low Power Wide Area networks upon unlicensed frequencies. Herein, the LoRaWAN medium access sets up a lightweight network architecture able to connect very low power devices to the Internet. Traffic flows in such deployments can be variable, or even unpredictable, depending on the needs of the monitoring applications using the network. As an example, to track air quality in cities, some applications can trigger an increased need of fine grained pollution data during the daytime. However, the network capacity is currently limited by the default LoRaWAN pure ALOHA access scheme. A time synchronized scheduled access would considerably improve the achievable throughput, at the cost of an increased power consumption for synchronization duties. In such a context, this contribution introduces the traffic-aware energy efficient Medium Access Control (TREMA) protocol for LoRa networks, capable of seamlessly switching between asynchronous and synchronous schemes according to the probed traffic variations. TREMA ultimately increases the maximum capacity of LoRa deployments while always selecting the most energy efficient access scheme.

In this paper, we propose a computation offloading method based on the game theory, which is suitable for cloud-edge computing networks. We consider that the Cloud Server (CS) can offload the computation tasks to wireless Access Points (APs) associated with Edge Servers (ESs) to accelerate processing. ESs can gain benefits through computation offloading, while the CS can reduce its cost and computing pressure. We model the interaction between the CS and ESs as a Stackelberg game, and use the backward induction method to analyze the proposed game. We prove that the game can achieve a unique Nash equilibrium. Then, we propose a Gradient-based Iterative Search Algorithm (GISA) to maximize the utility of the CS and ESs. Finally, numerical simulation results show that our proposed method greatly outperforms other benchmark schemes under different scenarios, and can encourage ESs to trade their computation resources with the CS effectively.

Mobile edge computing (MEC) is an emerging paradigm that supports low-latency applications in resource-constrained scenarios, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and vehicular networks. MEC makes it feasible to process and handle massive amounts of data and service requests generated by mobile end users or IoT devices and to deliver timely responses or interventions. However, the computers forming an MEC system typically have limited computing resources, which must be shared by multiple tasks and many simultaneous service requests. How to dispatch and schedule computational tasks from end users in an MEC system is a challenging problem, especially for latency-sensitive applications. In this paper, we propose a self-adaptive task dispatching and scheduling scheme to deliver low-latency service responses in a resource-efficient way. The proposed approach prioritizes computational tasks based on their attributes (e.g., CPU and RAM requirements, priority level, and expiration time) and solves the scheduling problem using a reinforcement learning approach. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme are verified using simulation and a small-scale case study on an MEC testbed, demonstrating that the proposed scheme is effective and efficient.
