Tor implements Mixnet to route communications through multiple relay nodes for anonymous routing. The artificial relay additions, while providing anonymity and making the communications difficult to trace, introduce additional communication latency. We advance the current Tor's source-driven circuit path selection to improve the networking performance. While Tor builds circuits using the Consensus Directory, we design and build new directories (building on the existing Consensus Directory to increase the relay-node selectivity) and the routing algorithm (using the directories). In contrast to the previous research works which had similar goals to enhance the path selection algorithms for low latency performance, we take a systems approach to build on the existing Tor network (introducing new directories and algorithms but using the rest of the existing Tor mechanism for the circuit construction) and implement and experiment on the real-world Tor network to empirically validate our scheme design and the theoretical analyses. Our scheme controls the tradeoff between anonymity vs. performance so that the source node can control the degree of circuit selectivity or even opt to use the current Tor (Vanilla Tor). To inform the source user's selection, we study how reducing the relay pool impacts anonymity (quantified and measured in entropy). Our prototype experiment results show significant improvements in latency performance. For example, our scheme controlling the immediate relay latency to be less than 30 milliseconds yields the latency cost to become one-third and the throughput to increase by more than 1.4x compared to the current Vanilla Tor performance.

HTTP/3 marks a significant advancement in protocol development, utilizing QUIC as its underlying transport layer to exploit multiplexing capabilities and minimize head-of-line blocking. The introduction of the Extensible Prioritization Scheme (EPS) offers a signaling mechanism for controlling the order of resource delivery. In this study, we introduce two mappings: Resource Type Aware Mapping (RTAM) and Direct Mapping (DM) from Chromium priority hints to EPS urgency levels with the goal of enhancing the key web performance metrics. The mappings are evaluated using EPS's urgency-based, non-incremental resource delivery method on eight popular websites. We observe that First Contentful Paint (FCP), Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Time To Interactive (TTI), and Speed Index (SI) show prominent improvements among the websites. Furthermore, RTAM outperforms DM in conjunction with non-incremental resource delivery method, achieving up to 100% improvements in Total Blocking Time (TBT) for some websites. An overall enhancement in Quality of Experience (QoE) metrics is observed across the range of websites.

Multiplexing Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency communications (URLLC) traffic on the same 5G New Radio (NR) air interface poses significant challenges due to extreme latency requirement of URLLC packets. This paper investigates the direct puncturing of URLLC traffic over eMBB transmissions, a method that, while guaranteeing immediate URLLC packet delivery, can severely degrade eMBB performance. To alleviate the adverse impact on eMBB, we present Cyrus-a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based puncturing solution for eMBB and URLLC multiplexing. Cyrus is tailored for the Open RAN (O-RAN) architecture and unifies the three control loops of O-RAN synergistically in its design of DRL-based solution. Not only does Cyrus meet the real-time requirements for URLLC but also it continuously updates and improves its scheduling policy based on changing network conditions. The effectiveness of Cyrus is demonstrated through link-level simulations for 5G NR, showing significant improvement in eMBB performance over the state-of-the-art, particularly as URLLC traffic increases.

The field of underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) has garnered significant attention due to its potential applications in global climate monitoring, military operations, and marine biology research. UOWC offers several advantages, including higher transmission data rates due to increased bandwidth utilization in unlicensed spectrum bands. However, it also faces challenges such as absorption, scattering, and turbulence, especially when dealing with the air-to-water (A2W) interface, which can be random and disruptive. This study involves simulations that demonstrate how a dynamic water surface disrupts the optical wireless communication channel between air and water in terms of received signal intensity. To address this issue, we explore the feasibility and advantages of optimizing the movements of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with an optical transmitter to counteract the interference caused by water surface waves. By simulating three optimized UAV movement strategies customized for value, reliability, and performance across both intermediate and deep water scenarios, this study demonstrates their effectiveness in achieving improved communication, even in the presence of a disruptive water surface.

Detecting malicious software applications is crucial in protecting user data and privacy. The increasing popularity of operating systems (OS) such as Android, iOS, and Windows has led to an expansion in the number of malicious software applications targeting these platforms. Several studies have explored various techniques to detect malware threats, including signature-based detection, behavioral analysis, dynamic analysis, and static analysis. However, these conventional methods may fail to detect new variants of malware with unique characteristics. This research paper introduces a unified approach that combines entropy bytecode-to-image visualization with ensemble learning to enhance the identification of malicious patterns. To validate the efficacy of the entropy encoder, the AndroZoo-2011 application data set was used as a training set, comprising 184,474 samples, including 49,150 and 13,324 malicious and benign applications, respectively. The applied method demonstrates improved performance with an accuracy of 95.77%, a precision of 90.60%, and an F1 score of 92.21% compared to other existing encoders, making our approach more applicable to real-world scenarios.

Services rely more and more on cloud platforms to offer their products to end users. This implies that being able to estimate the latency required to reach those cloud platforms is of growing importance. To shed light on this crucial aspect, we perform a three-month measurement campaign involving traceroute measurements every 30 minutes over 256 pairs of source-destination probes, where the vantage points are located in different Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) and the destination probes belong to one of the main Infrastructure Operators (IOs) of Spain. We provide interesting insights obtained from analyzing the data resulting from this campaign. Among them, we observe that, as expected, distance is the unavoidable factor impacting cloud latency. Yet, other results are less anticipated, such as the great stability of the network, or the lack of performance difference when comparing standard and premium network service tiers. We also analyze the potential of forecasting the cloud latency both for future samples but also for unobserved connections.

The hyperbolic fractional Fourier transform (HFrFT) as a generalized form of the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) based on complex transform orders is introduced. The definition of continuous-time hyperbolic fractional Fourier transform (CHFrFT) is extracted. In addition, a closed form of discrete hyperbolic fractional Fourier transform (DHFrFT) is derived. The relation between Wigner transform (WT) and HFrFT is expressed and its application in noise reduction in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is assessed. The performance of the proposed transform in wireless communication systems is evaluated based on the bit error rate (BER) analysis. The simulation result shows that HFrFT can be a suitable technique in ISAC applications.

Ever-changing cyber threats require strong and flexible network security solutions. This paper suggests a new method to improve the performance of detecting both known and unknown attacks using a neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence (NSAI) network intrusion detection system (NIDS). Deep neural networks (DNN) learn complex network data patterns, which create a detailed overview of cyber-attack characteristics. Symbolic logic integration into the DNN allows for model training guidance by applying penalties when the DNN fails to differentiate between malicious and benign network traffic. This improves our model's adaptability to new attacks and overcomes traditional signature-based NIDS limitations. By testing our NSAI NIDS on a large cyber dataset that includes novel attack scenarios, we show that it delivers an improvement in how accurately it detects attacks compared to traditional DNN methods. While our system maintains its high accuracy in recognizing known attacks, it outperforms conventional NIDS in discovering unknown attacks. This work improves cybersecurity by introducing a new way to detect both known and unknown network intrusions by combining DNNs with symbolic logic.

Dynamic Real-Time Range Queries (DRRQ) are widely used to discover local context between mobile clients in high-density areas where both clients requested by the query and inquirers are mobile. Unlike the very well-known continuous range queries only a few approaches such as Adaptive Quad Streaming (AQS) address scalability and real-time requirements that are important for ad-hoc mobility challenges in fully distributed client networks. In this paper we address fundamental limitations of AQS presenting the new lightweight AQSdynamic which supports arbitrary, individual, and time-dependent range query shapes instead of fixed circular ones, thus covering much more realistic scenarios. More important, AQSdynamic combines the decentralized streaming approach of AQS with "subscriptions" guaranteeing a real-time behavior with constant complexity with to the number of clients.

Access networks, even with advanced 5G technology, often face bottlenecks when supporting concurrent real-time Ultra High Definition (UHD) video streams with high bandwidth and low latency (e.g., under 10 ms of one-way delay) requirements. Traditionally, end systems employ a combination of flow and congestion control mechanisms to control the sending rate to avoid overwhelming the receiver and the network. However, such control efforts induce prolonged tail delays, thereby sharply reducing the number of UHD video streams meeting delivery deadlines, and sometimes even zero. These outcomes are largely due to the inaccurate network status estimation associated with the control mechanisms. To address this challenge, we propose CFC, a deadline-oriented flow control mechanism that employs cross-layer status estimation to maximize user satisfaction with deadlines. CFC accurately assesses cross-layer information, including flow status and 5G access network status at minimal expense, thus ensuring the deadlines through effective concurrent flow control. Our experiments, conducted in both simulation and testbed settings, demonstrate significant improvements in delay and load-balancing for both reliable and unreliable transmissions.
