For the full utilization of the high transmission bandwidth of optical fiber, several optically transparent switching nodes are proposed for use in photonic LANs, MANs or B-ISDN access networks. The node design is simple and adaptable to various networks including rings, buses, and WDM networks. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the optical ring networks which utilize the photonic packet switching nodes. A quantitative performance comparison study is carried out to observe the effect of header speed on the optical ring network performance.

A group communication protocol has been proposed and implemented for the distributed network management system (MOVI: managed object view interface). To reduce protocol overhead, distributed and hierarchical approaches have been introduced: the group management function has been split into three functional entities. The first one is the local group manager (LCM) which manages one or more member(s) in one host. The second one is the group communication daemon (GCD) which supports the overlapped grouping facility in a single site. The last one is the global group manager (GGM) which controls one or more LCM(s) and GCD(s) and provides group communication over the whole network. The distributed network management system design has been based on the hierarchical domain approach. This group communication, therefore, has been designed with a hierarchical and distributed group management scheme.

We investigate the effect of limiting the access bandwidth of a video source. In some applications, the access bandwidth is less than the peak rate of the source and so dropping of packets occurs. A model is needed for this truncated source. The model suggested in the paper is based on the discrete-state continuous time Markov model proposed by Maglaris et al. (1988). We derive the mean and the autocorrelation function of the rate of this new model and show that these statistical properties agree with the experimental values.

Optical switching networks to transport vast amounts of information are important for B-ISDN services. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is emerging as the dominant technology for future optical networks. A large capacity photonic ATM switch architecture using WDM technology is proposed in this paper. The proposed switch is suitable for WDM optical ATM networks, that is, the input and an output of the switch are wavelength division multiplexed. The switch can provide very large ATM cell switching capacity, for instance, 10 Tbit/s, with reasonable complexity. The basic switch module of the proposed switch has a simple architecture, and reduces the amount of a buffer hardware by introducing the WDM concept.

The paper defines new performability-based QOS (quality of service) metrics to characterize the quality of services offered over telecommunication and computer communication networks. Performability metrics used to characterize fault-tolerant computer systems are not directly applicable to services. This paper discusses the various challenges that arise in defining performability metrics for services. These metrics are defined both from a service provider perspective as well as a customer perspective. In order to model real-world service offerings, which often involve multiple vendor networks, we define service segment metrics from which overall service metrics can be obtained. Additionally, these service segment metrics can be used in negotiations between the different vendors participating in the joint service offering.

Today's demanding applications, such as multimedia, require higher network transfer rates. Traditional local area networks (LANs) will not be able to provide the throughput required by these applications. The use of switches in LANs is an effective technique to increase the throughput of the network. These switches have finite buffers at their input and output ports. The size of these buffers affect the packet loss rate. It also affect the delay at the switch as packets may have to wait for the output buffer to become available. We study the effect of buffer sizes within these switches. We show how the buffer size is related to the performance of the switch as well as overall performance of the LAN.

In future WDM local area networks, the number of available wavelengths may initially be fairly modest. As a result, spatial reuse is required in order to obtain designs which will support a reasonable number of stations. A dual-hop architecture is considered. The network is partitioned into two stages. In the first, the wavelength agility of the user stations is used to route packets from a given local optical network (LON) to a destination LON. When packets arrive at their destination LON, they are buffered and transmitted onto the required wavelength. There are a number of significant advantages to this arrangement. In addition, the proposed design takes advantage of increasingly available commercial ATM buffer/switch components. Several hybrid electro-optic designs are discussed. We propose electronic implementations for the buffering stage and also consider the "almost" all-optical approaches first introduced by Haas (1993). The performance of the proposed systems is considered using various traffic models. Simplified control strategies are also proposed and multiple wavelength sharing is used to decrease the number of required buffers.

The classical M/G/1 system with vacations has been used to estimate the mean waiting time of individual priority classes of homogeneous FDDI networks. To faithfully model the FDDI network using M/G/1 system, the vacation interval of the server (token) as seen by individual priority classes must be evaluated. The expressions for the mean waiting time of individual priority classes are functions of first and second moments of the vacation intervals of that class. It can be shown that the expression derived for the first and second moments of the vacation intervals of the respective classes are functions of the mean and variance of number of messages transmitted by each priority class per token rotation. These expressions are evaluated using an iterative procedure that utilizes the prior knowledge of the throughput characteristics of the FDDI network. Simulation results show that the model provides accurate estimates for the mean waiting time of individual priority classes of a homogeneous FDDI network.

In this paper, we investigate the performance of two burst-level admission control protocol for ATM networks that are based on simple random access techniques: fell-and-wait and tell-and-go. We develop an analytical model based on reduced load approximation to obtain throughput, end-to-end transfer delay and blocking probability characteristics far an arbitrary network topology with multirate traffic. We discuss the performance of these two protocols under varying propagation delays and peak bit rates. We discuss how the presence of multirate traffic introduces the issue of fairness into these burst-level admission control protocols, a phenomenon not observed previously.

We introduce a novel multicast switching paradigm, the deflecting multicast switch (DMS), which accomplishes the replication and routing functions of a multicast switch simultaneously. The architecture is shown to have low connection complexity and can be implemented in a modular fashion. A self-routing and self-replication algorithm with minimal control overhead is described which allows for distributed control of these functions. A key requirement of ATM, namely the maintenance of cell sequence in a session, is easily ensured. Analytical results are presented for the calculation of the cell loss probability, the number of stages to guarantee an upper bound on the cell loss probability and the buffer delays. For the case of uniform traffic patterns, numerical results are presented which exhibit the number of stages required for a fixed cell loss probability as well as the buffer delays.
