The paper presents a scheme for admission control at the call set-up in an ATM node, aimed at minimising the probability of blocking a call and at balancing this probability between traffic classes. The traffic is considered to be divided into traffic classes, characterised by statistical parameters like peak and average bandwidth and by quality of service (QoS) requirements that allow to define a feasibility region: where requirements are guaranteed A model to describe the 'call admission' is proposed: two different cost functions, based on the blocking probability, are defined and minimised, taking into account the 'feasibility region' constraint: the first function is intended to obtain the minimum overall blocking probability, whereas the second is aimed to balance the blocking probability among classes. The maximum number of acceptable calls yielded by each cost function is obtained for each class, by minimising it under stationary traffic conditions. The efficiency of the proposed strategy is tested by simulations and verified by comparing it with other admission schemes.

This paper focuses on the use of discrete event simulation techniques for the performance evaluation of FDDI networks interconnected via the ATM WAN. The simulation enables us to obtain relevant data on such performance evaluators as the end-to-end delay and throughput for the traditional TCP/IP traffic over the internetwork. The qualitative analysis provides a basis to formulate the delay and throughput approximations and reveals the intrinsic behaviour of these networks. The detailed network model has been developed in the C language. OPNET, a Unix-based communication systems simulation tool which supports the hierarchical object-oriented model is used in this simulation. The FDDI-ATM internetwork performance results are presented.

Fault management, which consists of fault detection, diagnosis, and recovery is one of the key goals of network management. We consider an application of system-level diagnosis concepts to the problem of fault diagnosis in networks. Since the primary function of the nodes in a communication network is to route messages, the diagnosis is done with respect to the ability of the nodes to accomplish routing correctly. We propose a basic test model in which a node is tested with the help of two other nodes (a tester and a helper node) that check the ability of the tested node to correctly route the messages between the tester and the helper nodes. Necessary conditions are derived for a network to be t-diagnosable under this model. The proposed model does not require tests with perfect coverage.

In this paper, object-oriented techniques and concepts (e.g., object migration inheritance delegation) and reflection are applied to the design of a distributed system called the reflective object-oriented distributed system (RODS). RODS hides object distribution and underlying platform heterogeneity to simplify the development of distributed multimedia applications. RODS has two major components: the flexible multimedia object adaptor (FMOA) and the reflective object request broker (RORB). The FMOA is an application framework of classes to facilitate the construction of distributed multimedia applications. The RORB is a CORBA object request broker that integrates additional features such as smart proxies, delegation, migration, and sharing. By utilizing a reflective model, RORB allows the application programmer and the system to dynamically modify distributed object management policies.

In this paper, we propose a new pre-emptive congestion control (PECC) scheme for deployment in shared buffer-based ATM networks. The proposed PECC uses a rate-based feedback scheme for dynamic bandwidth allocation to best-effort traffic coexisting with guaranteed service traffic. Policing of the guaranteed service continuous bit-rate and variable bit-rate traffic is done using the leaky bucket mechanism. The PECC is a predictive scheme rather than a reactive one. The internal state of the ATM switch is used to predict the onset of congestion. The backward explicit congestion notification feedback scheme developed in earlier works for ATM local area networks has been effectively used in our scheme for delays equivalent to those of MANs and WANs. A simulation model for an illustrative ATM network exhibiting congestion has been constructed. The effect of varying key parameters including mean inter-arrival time, buffer threshold throttle factor, cell reject throttle factor, buffer threshold, filter time and rate reduction delta has been studied. Transient behaviour of an example ATM network employing shared buffer switches under the event of congestion, and its control by backward explicit congestion notification has also been simulated.

ATM networks are intended to accommodate all traffic types, including highly bursty traffic. In this paper, we present a traffic control framework for handling bursty traffic on a burst-by-burst basis. The protocol and associated mechanisms are designed to handle bursts of related cells as units. Hence, cells in a burst are forwarded or dropped as a unit. The framework includes mechanisms to allow a connection to acquire resources at a switch when a burst arrives and to release them when a burst leaves. In addition, techniques for bundling such bursty connections into virtual paths are described. A candidate burst-oriented call admission control scheme is also presented. The performance of the burst-oriented approach is then analyzed.

We formalize the notions of latency, effective throughput, fairness, and transient period in a complexity theoretic framework. This new framework allows us to prove the first known complexity results and tight bounds on the latency in a client/server distributed computing system. Using this formal complexity model, we study a general class of fair and maximally efficient control algorithms that maximizes the effective throughput and minimizes the transient period. We show that any fair and maximally efficient algorithm will result in at least cNlogN+O(N) latency, where N is the number of greedy clients in the network and the constant c is a parameter of the chosen algorithm. This lower bound is also shown to be tight.

The asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is the choice of transport mode for B-ISDN. In this paper, we propose a window-based ATM cell scheduling scheme using a neural network to achieve higher throughput for nonblocking ATM switches. In a nonblocking switch with input queues, significant loss of throughput can occur due to head-of-line blocking when FIFO queueing is employed. To resolve this problem, we propose an optimal input bypass queueing method which maximizes switch throughput. We also employ a queue length based priority scheme to reduce cell delay variations and cell loss probabilities. With the employed priority scheme, the variance of delay is also significantly reduced under nonuniform traffic, resulting in lower cell loss rates at a given buffer size. Due to higher switch throughput achieved with our cell scheduling, the cell loss probabilities and the buffer sizes necessary to guarantee a given cell loss rate become even smaller than those with output queueing that has been known to provide better performance than input queueing.

Technology for local ATM is currently being offered in a number of devices, such as routers, switches, and switching hubs. These devices provide the capability for an ATM switched internetwork. In general, a switched internetwork consists of an ATM backbone and a number of hubs. The hubs, by providing ATM adaptation functionality, serve as access points to the ATM backbone for servers and clients. The objective of our study is to evaluate alternative strategies for migrating towards an ATM switched internetwork. Our investigation is based on a local area network providing interconnection for a group of clients and servers in a campus environment. A number of different configurations may, at various stages of migration, comprise the interconnection media for this local area network. The network components that are considered in this migration process are Ethernets, both shared and dedicated, multiplexers, hubs, ATM switches, and ATM-equipped end devices. A simulation model is developed to study the performance of the different configurations. Simulation results for end-to-end delay and loss are presented for each alternative configuration.

We study three reachability problems for cyclic protocols: (1) global state reachability; (2) abstract state reachability; and (3) execution cycle reachability. By combining fair progress and maximal progress during state exploration, we prove that these three problems an all decidable for Q, the class of cyclic protocols with finite fair reachable state spaces. In the course of the investigation, we also show that detection of k-indefiniteness and k-livelock an decidable for Q.
