PIM (protocol independent multicast) is capable of supporting sparse mode (SM) and dense mode (DM) operations. In sparse mode, PIM can use shared trees (RPT) or shortest path trees (SPT) to deliver data packets. The availability of these various modes opens questions regarding when each should be used, and the consequences of switching among them dynamically. This paper reports on two specific issues: (1) the overhead tradeoffs between dense mode operations and sparse mode operations, (2) the behaviors of PIM when receivers transition from RPT to SPT. Our results illustrate the cross-over point of sparse mode and dense mode overheads, which gives a hint for selecting protocol modes according to the group density metric. We also show that the conditions under which packet losses occur due to SPT switch are rare.

We study a multistage ATM switch in which shared-memory switching elements are arranged in a banyan topology. By "shared memory", we mean that each switching element uses output queueing and shares its local cell buffer memory among all its output ports. We apply a buffer management technique called delayed pushout that was originally designed for multistage ATM switches with hierarchical topologies. Delayed pushout combines a pushout mechanism, for sharing memory efficiently among queues within the same switching element, and a backpressure mechanism, for sharing memory across switch stages. The backpressure component has a threshold to restrict the amount of sharing between stages. A synergy emerges when pushout, backpressure, and this threshold are all employed together. Using a computer simulation of the switch under bursty traffic, we study delayed pushout as well as several simpler pushout and backpressure schemes under a variety of traffic conditions. Of the five schemes we simulate, delayed pushout is the only one that performs well under all load conditions.

In this paper the non-linear and complex relationship between packet loss probability and average packet delay for an input/output buffered ATM switch is studied thoroughly using our previously published analysis model. The main contribution is insight into the behavior of the switch and better understanding of the buffer size trade-offs under various traffic conditions speed-up factors, and buffer sizes. For different traffic conditions and buffer sizes, several distinct regions are identified and the behavior of the switch in those regions is explained. The results presented here can provide the basis for an optimum VLSI design methodology for input/output-buffered switches.

An important problem in communication networks is to be able to efficiently multicast information to a group of network sites. Multicasting reduces the transmission overhead of the network and the time it takes for all the nodes in the subset to receive the information. Recent advances in network speed, switching technology, and the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks have introduced new applications and provided new services which were not feasible before. Today's network applications such as multimedia, video, audio, resource discovery, teleconferencing, distributed/replicated database management can benefit immensely from efficient multicasting techniques. We discuss methods of establishing efficient multicasting in a communication network. We discuss an efficient implementation of a widely used multicasting method that produces a solution no greater than twice that of an optimal solution. We also present two efficient multicast tree constructions for a general version of the multicasting problem in which a network consists of different classes of nodes.

Interconnecting LANs over a wide area has become a serious problem, due to the growing resource requirements induced by multimedia real time applications like video conferencing. B-ISDNs, based on ATM, will offer resources (high bandwidth) and services (guaranteed QoS) to eventually solve the problem. In this work we investigate the intermediate solution based on the connectionless service offered by MANs. This results in the definition of a simulation model of a completely connectionless packet switched network system, whose performances are carefully evaluated by considering a workload generated by real video conferencing tools. Simulation results of end to end delay, delay jitter, resources utilization are presented showing capabilities and limits of a LAN/MAN interconnected system in supporting the bursty traffic generated by tens of users distributed on different LANs. The work shows that is possible to use the traditional packet switched transport mechanism over the connectionless service to support video conference requirements with a bandwidth utilization higher than the current one obtained by bandwidth reservation techniques.

In order to efficiently manage ATM network resources, a new dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme called minimum overflow traffic algorithm (MOTA) is proposed to assign the bandwidth b/sub i/ for each traffic class in ATM networks. An overflow traffic function Q is used to adjust the bandwidth assignment each time when a new connection is required. This algorithm sets the mean overflow traffic to bandwidth ratio in the system as the optimization object function Q and adjusts the bandwidth assignment to each traffic class by optimizing Q. The average virtual cell loss probability (VCLP) is employed to measure the quality of service. This novel approach can minimize the VCLP of the system by optimizing Q, utilize the link capacity efficiently and provide high throughput in a multi-class traffic environment.

Libra is an object-oriented simulator developed for simulation and fast prototyping of ATM networks. It is designed and implemented to address the diverse issues encountered in the simulation of any large-scale ATM network, namely, modeling of source traffic, network control, switch architecture design, and effective interaction of all these elements in an integrated fashion. The simulator is built on top of an object-oriented platform named Ptolemy. This simulator provides some distinct features that make it suitable for the simulation and analysis of ATM networks.

This paper presents CHANNELS, a run-time system for network protocol processing. CHANNELS is especially intended and optimized for transport systems supporting multimedia applications on high-speed networks. Additionally to the traditional features of a run-time system like the scheduling of the processing of different protocols, the provision of dedicated facilities such as timer, buffer and mapping table libraries for protocol implementation and the support of communication to adjacent protocol entities, network devices and user processes, CHANNELS enables the implementation of sophisticated protocols which require real-time and parallel processing capabilities, or dynamic protocol configuration support. CHANNELS is implemented in the C++ programming language and one prototype is embedded in the SUN/UNIX kernel.

Reachability analysis and reverse reachability analysis are two important verification techniques for communicating finite state machines (CFSMs). The issue of the relative efficiency of reachability analysis and reverse reachability analysis is still unsettled. We first propose a new theory of reachability and reverse reachability analysis. Based on the new theory we discuss and analyze the suitability of these two reachability analysis methods. We then present a reachability evaluator, which, given any network of CFSMs, will try to estimate the sizes of the reachable and reverse reachable state spaces by taking snapshots of the reachability and reverse reachability spaces. The core of the evaluator is the notion of random state generation with seed states, which extends the idea of random state exploration proposed by West (1986). Results from example applications have shown that the evaluator provides guidance in choosing the better of the two methods.

We propose an efficient algorithm for constructing optimized protocol converters to achieve interoperability between heterogeneous computer networks. This method first generates constraints from existing protocols and imposes them to channel specifications, which removes message sequences of the channel specifications that do not contribute to system progress. Then, an optimized converter is generated from a given deterministic service specification, the two protocol specifications and the modified channel specifications. The observation equivalence is used to compare the service specification and the internetworking system. Compared with related works reported by Calvert and Lam (1989), our method has two advantages: (1) it generates an optimized converter; and (2) it needs less computation.
