As voice interfaces and virtual assistants have moved out of the industry research labs and into the pockets, desktops and living rooms of the general public, a demand for a new kind of user experience (UX) design is emerging. Although the people are becoming familiar with Siri, Alexa, Cortana and others, their user experience is still characterized by short, command- or query-oriented exchanges, rather than longer, conversational ones. Limitations of the microphone and natural language processing technologies are only part of the problem. Current conventions of UX design apply mostly to visual user interfaces, such as web or mobile; they are less useful for deciding how to organize utterances, by the user and the virtual agent, into sequences that work like those of natural human conversation. This edited book explores the intersection of UX design, of both text- or voice-based virtual agents, and the analysis of naturally occurring human conversation (e.g., the Conversation Analysis, Discourse Analysis and interactional Sociolinguistics literatures). It contains contributions from researchers, from academia and industry, with varied backgrounds working in the area of human-computerinteraction. Each chapter explores some aspect of conversational UX design. Some describe the design challenges faced in creating a particular virtual agent. Others discuss how the findings from the literatures of the social sciences can inform a new kind of UX design that starts with conversation.

In the modern era, every family and local community can cultivate its own history, endowing living people with meanings inherited from the people of the past, by means of todays computer-based information and communication technologies. A new profession is emerging, family historians, serving the wider public by assisting in collection and analysis of fascinating data, by teaching talented amateur historians, and by producing complete narratives. Essential are the skills and technologies required to preserve and connect photos, movies, videos, diaries, memoirs, correspondence, artefacts and even architecture such as homes. Online genealogical services are well established sources of official government records, but usually not for recent decades, and not covering the valuable records of legal, medical, and religious organizations. Information can be shared and interpreted by family members through oral history interviews, social media, and online private archives such as wikis and shared file depositories. This book explores a wide variety of online information sources and achieves coherence by documenting and interpreting the history of a particular extended American family on the basis of 9 decades of movies and videos, 17 decades of photographs, and centuries of documents. Starting now, any family may begin to preserve their current experiences for the historians of the future, but this will require social as well as technical innovations. This book is the essential resource, providing the fundamental principles, effective methods, and fascinating questions required to make our past live again.

How should we understand and design for fun as a User Experience? This new edition of a classic book is for students, designers and researchers who want to deepen their understanding of fun in the context of HCI. The 2003 edition was the first book to do this and has been influential in broadening the field. It is the most downloaded book in the Springer HCI series. This edition adds 14 new chapters that go well beyond the topics considered in 2003. New chapter topics include: online dating, interactive rides, wellbeing, somaesthetics, design fiction, critical design and participatory design methods. The first edition chapters are also reprinted, with new notes by their authors setting the context in which the 2003 chapter was written and explaining the developments since then. Taken with the new chapters this adds up to a total of 35 theoretical and practical chapters written by the most influential thinkers from academia and industry in this field.

Online Harassment is one of the most serious problems in social media. To address it requires understanding the forms harassment takes, how it impacts the targets, who harasses, and how technology that stands between users and social media can stop harassers and protect users. The field of human-computerinteraction provides a unique set of tools to address this challenge. This book brings together experts in theory, socio-technical systems, network analysis, text analysis, and machine learning to present a broad set of analyses and applications that improve our understanding of the harassment problem and how to address it. This book tackles the problem of harassment by addressing it in three major domains. First, chapters explore how harassment manifests, including extensive analysis of the Gamer Gate incident, stylistic features of different types of harassment, how gender differences affect misogynistic harassment. Then, we look at the results of harassment, including how it drives people offline and the impacts it has on targets. Finally, we address techniques for mitigating harassment, both through automated detection and filtering and interface options that users control. Together, many branches of HCI come together to provide a comprehensive look at the phenomenon of online harassment and to advance the field toward effective human-oriented solutions.

Affective components are as important as cognitive components in tutoring assisted learning process. Feedback from tutors is essential in keeping students motivated. Affectivity and motivation are also significant in computer-based tutoring systems. However, several educational frameworks do not include this kind of interaction between students and tutoring systems. In those cases, the students learning interest and motivation to learn could be negatively affected, and student profits from the system could be impoverished. This is why tutoring systems need to provide direct and affective interaction with students; it can encourage them and increase the motivation to learn. This book introduces a broad range of topics in affective learning in computer-based systems. The text offers a deep conceptual background, covering relevant concepts of affectivity, feedback and motivational components in learning environments. It describes the design of a proposed model for providing affective feedback, the mathematical validation of the conceptual model and its implementation. Moreover, it presents an analysis of the impact of the affective feedback on student motivation to learn. Finally, the book offers research perspectives of the impact and applicability of the affective feedback in computer-based tutoring environments. Affective Feedback in Intelligent Tutoring Systems can be used by human tutors who want to include motivational and affective elements in the learning process, researchers in human-computerinteraction and Education and by software developers who want to develop learning systems using these elements.

Currently, Internet and virtual reality communication is essentially audio-visual. The next important breakthrough of the Internet will be the communication and sharing of smell and taste experiences digitally. Audio-visual stimuli are frequency based, and they can be easily digitized and actuated. On the other hand, taste and smell stimuli are based on chemical molecules, therefore, they are not easy to digitize or actuate. To solve this problem, we are required to discover new digital actuation technologies for taste and smell. The authors of this book have experimented on developing digital actuation devices for several years. This book will provide a complete overview of the importance of digitizing taste and smell, prior works, proposed technologies by the authors, other state of the art research, advantages and limitations of the proposed methods, and future applications. We expect digital taste and smell technologies will revolutionize the field of multisensory augmented reality and open up new interaction possibilities in different disciplines such as humancomputerinteraction, Communication, and Augmented and Virtual Reality.

This book takes a unique HCI approach to the concept of Software Product Line (SPL) and discusses the peculiarities of human-computerinteraction not usually addressed in more traditional approaches. SPL is based on industrial practices for defining a range of software products. SPL design identifies commonalities and differences between the various software versions, modelling and managing the software variability. Recent research has focused on reconciling the different viewpoints of SPL and HCI, and in particular emphasizing the specific variability of HCI and the management of complex SPL models that could benefit from HCI in terms of representation, manipulation and visualization. This edited volume includes research that addresses the SPL for HCI and HCI for SPL. In putting together these two research streams, the groundwork is laid for future research into this important area. Both the HCI and the software engineering communities will find this book an invaluable resource.

It is well-established that while cognitive psychology provides a sound foundation for an understanding of our interactions with digital technology, this is no longer sufficient to make sense of how we use and experience the personal, relational and ubiquitous technologies that pervade everyday life. This book begins with a consideration of the nature of experience itself, and the user experience (UX) of digital technology in particular, offering a new, broader definition of the term. This is elaborated though a wide-ranging and rigorous review of what are argued to be the three core UX elements. These are involvement, including shared sense making, familiarity, appropriation and being-with technologies; affect, including emotions with and about technology, impressions, feelings and mood; and aesthetics, including embodied aesthetics and neuroaesthetics. Alongside this, new insights are introduced into how and why much of our current use of digital technology is simply idling, or killing time. A particular feature of the book is a thorough treatment of parallel, and sometimes competing, accounts from differing academic traditions. Overall, the discussion considers both foundational and more recent theoretical and applied perspectives from social psychology, evolutionary psychology, folk psychology, neuroaesthetics, neuropsychology, the philosophy of technology, design and the fine arts. This broad scope will be enlightening and stimulating for anyone concerned in understanding UX. A Psychology of User Experiencestands as a companion text to the authors HCI Reduxtext which discusses the contemporary treatment of cognition in human-computerinteraction.

Smart home technologies promise to transform domestic comfort, convenience, security and leisure while also reducing energy use. But delivering on these potentially conflicting promises depends on how they are adopted and used in homes. This book starts by developing a new analytical framework for understanding smart homes and their users. Drawing on a range of new empirical research combining both qualitative and quantitative data, the book then explores how smart home technologies are perceived by potential users, how they can be used to link domestic energy use to common daily activities, how they may (or may not) be integrated into everyday life by actual users, and how they serve to change the nature of control within households and the home. The book concludes by synthesising a range of evidence-based insights, and posing a series of challenges for industry, policy, and research that need addressing if a smart home future is to be realised. Researchers will find this book provides useful insights into this fast-growing field
