The paper presents the results of a survey that analyses the additive manufacturing (AM) industry's application of design and release processes based on a proposed "ideal" release process, which was developed with the knowledge and experience of the Product Lifecycle Management and additive manufacturing (AM) groups at the University of Applied Sciences. This process reflects modern computer-aided design (CAD) tools and their capability, e.g. to add the form and position tolerancing by 3D annotation (product manufacturing information, PMI). As the complexity of additive manufacturing emphasizes the importance of release processes, the requirements of "design for manufacturing" (DfM), especially "design for additive manufacturing" (DfAM), are also considered. Furthermore, the present way of designing AM parts (raw and final part) is reflected. A gap analysis is conducted on the survey results, whereby improvements to close the gap are discussed. This knowledge is used in a running scientific project with an industry partner to offer additive manufacturing services via an internet platform that calculates an immediate and quantity-dependent price offer.

This research assessed in context, the usability of two widely used fintech platforms, with a focus on identifying gaps that exclude African Caribbean micro-businesses in Leicester from maximizing the affordances of the platforms. Drawing from an integrated perspective of Affordance and Activity Theories, the study involved collecting data from 12microbusiness entrepreneurs through semistructured usability interviews, observations, and competitive benchmarks. Data was analyzed using user journey maps, thematic analysis of observation notes, and transcribed interviews. The analysis revealed significant contextual issues that the fintech platforms have failed to address, which include community-driven needs and trust-related concerns with how data could be used for surveillance among African-Caribbean community. Additionally, platform-specific challenges such as disparities in features across iOS and Android platforms, as well as web interfaces, posed challenges for a seamless user experience. The research also pointed out the redundancy in requesting certain information that was not relevant to all business types, highlighting the need for more tailored and context-sensitive platform designs. These findings have significant implications for inclusivity in fintech platform design and other digital platforms that could enhance inclusivity, development, and growth of minority businesses in the UK and the Global North by extension.

Metal Additive manufacturing (AM) is a complex operation, which requires the fine-tuning of hundreds of processes parameters to obtain repeatability and a good quality design at dimensional, geometric, structural levels. Therefore, to be used as final product, metal AM parts must go through advanced quality control processes. This implies large capital equipment investment in measurement systems (i.e., tomography and lengthy inspection operations that adversely impact costs and lead times). A large amount of data can be collected in metal AM processes, as most industrial AM systems are equipped with sensors providing log signals, images and videos. This paper develops and proposes an innovative quality-oriented decision support framework, composed by a-Model-based Design tool providing Design for Additive Manufacturing features, and a Cyber-Physical System created by integrating an AM asset with a real-time smart monitoring software application. Such framework caters to process engineers and quality managers needs to improve a set of quality and economic KPIs.

In smart manufacturing, data-driven artificial intelligence algorithms are becoming increasingly important in improving decision-making by monitoring the control, analysis, and prediction of manufacturing processes in a production system. In the textile industry, there is a strong need for smart manufacturing technologies because various parameters could affect the quality dynamically. This study aims to optimize the parameters of spinning processes by developing machine learning algorithms and models which can predict the toughness and elasticity of threads. At first, meaningful variables are extracted from the shop floor data, and then a defect classification learning model is developed to predict defects in advance. In addition, a regression model is implemented for the prediction of toughness and elasticity of the textile. By transitioning from the traditional trial and error method to the data-based method for the spinning process, production costs and time can be reduced through optimal settings of the production parameters for the spinning of the desired threads.

The emergence of information and communication technology has allowed the transformation of urban governance into smart governance, leading cities to fulfill their mission and develop their processes more efficiently and effectively. In this context, civic participation has become fundamental to the success of smart city initiatives. In this vein, this article aims to investigate how smart city initiatives promote civic participation through smart governance. After a systematic review of the literature, the antecedents, moderators and mechanisms associated with this relationship were identified. The antecedents or structural factors are: technological, political & socio-economic and local government contexts. Furthermore, digital exclusion and citizens' educational background are proposed as instrumental factors. This research concludes that to increase civic participation it is essential to address issues like the digital divide and provide citizen education. Lastly, it is concluded that smart governance is a key mechanism through which smart city initiatives can enable civic participation.

The sector of Food & Beverage (F&B) has experienced a remarkable increase in the diversification of products, leading to a consequential increase in variability, which, if not properly managed, would result in tampering profitability. Assuming that this trend cannot be reversed, manufacturers must foster their operations' efficiency, thus sustaining their competitiveness. Industry 4.0 (I4.0) paradigm is recognized worldwide as one of the preferred paths to address this issue. By following the digitalization path, companies may encounter different barriers and will require support to overcome them. Specifically, MNCs require to exploit existing synergies among different plants and build common infrastructures. This paper presents a methodology aimed at creating a unified roadmap (TRM) for multi-plant manufacturing companies. The methodology is then applied through an industrial case study to enable the desired digital transformation of a wholeMNC's country branch, starting from the MNC's objectives and the digital maturity assessment of the single plants. The industrial case, the Italian branch of a Swiss MNC (3 plants), allowed to support C-Levels in identifying the priority areas at subsidiary level and in allocating resources accordingly. Regarding the theoretical implications, the research allowed to shift from a single-plant view, adopted by several TRM studies, to a cross-plant cross-function integrated approach.

Object detection and other machine learning technology applications play an important role in various areas of computer vision (CV) applications within the product lifecycle, especially in quality assurance or general assembly assistance. While the implemented CV-based systems provide great benefits, training and implementing deep learning models is often a tedious and time-consuming task, especially in the field of object detection. To accomplish good results, large datasets with a high quantity of object instances in a bright variety of poses are required These are generally created manually and are therefore very time consuming to create. To improve the training process, synthetic training data can be used. It is generated within a virtual environment using a product's geometry model. In this paper, the authors propose a synthetic dataset generator for object detection, that is integrated into a PLM system to automate the process of collecting and processing the CAD data for creating the synthetic machine learning training dataset. Domain randomization is used to eliminate the effort of creating a virtual environment, to fully automate the dataset generation, and to increase the generalization of the model. The trained detector is tested on an object detection demonstrator set-up to evaluate its performance in a real-world use case. For evaluation purposes, the authors also provide a comparison of the test results to an object detection model that is trained without domain randomization, using a very close-to-reality virtual environment.

This study explored the issue of digital readiness in underprivileged secondary schools in South Africa, delving into the complexities and challenges associated with technology integration in education. The study focused on understanding the relationships between the availability of infrastructure, the attitudes of teachers towards using technology in teaching, the effectiveness of technological implementation, and external challenges such as load shedding. The study adopted a qualitative case study approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews to gain insights from participants on their experiences, perceptions, and challenges related to technology usage in the classroom. The findings highlight the disparity in infrastructure availability, with many schools grappling with insufficient or outdated equipment. Additionally, the study uncovered different attitudes among teachers, with older educators showing a leaning toward traditional teaching methods despite acknowledging the potential benefits of technology. The challenges of integrating technology into the daily teaching routine are further compounded by the unpredictable nature of load shedding, which disrupts planned activities and hinders the consistent use of technological tools. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the critical need for a context-aware approach in improving the digital readiness of underprivileged schools, underscoring the importance of continuous teacher training, administrative support, and strategic partnerships for equipment donation. It contributes significantly to existing literature by providing insights specific to the South African context and lays a foundation for future research and policy initiatives aimed at fostering digital literacy and readiness in underprivileged educational settings.

The dynamic environment of manufacturing companies not only directly impacts products and their design but also affects the configuration of production systems. Traditionally used production principles, such as the flow principle, which could previously be operated economically for (homogeneous) standard products, now no longer meet the requirements due to the increasing number of product variants and decreasing volumes. Other production principles, such as job shops or cell production, offer more flexibility to cover the diversity of product variants. However, considering the economic and logistical targets, those principles have longer throughput times and higher levels of work-in-process. This paper presents the idea of combining different production principles into hybrid structures to combine the advantages of flow production, such as high utilization and short lead times, with the flexibility of other principles. Hybrid production structures make the production system more flexible and transformable so that changes can be implemented more efficiently, and the life cycle costs of a production system can be reduced as a result. However, the configuration of a hybrid production structure requires the consideration of different influencing factors and the quantification of the economic and logistical targets. For this purpose, a research approach is presented in this paper.

To reduce costs and increase production capacity, and meet market demand in a sustainable manner, the aerospace industry is placing a growing emphasis on designing the entire product life cycle. This necessitates a novel approach to make a significant advancement and ensure competitiveness in the 21st century. One solution that has emerged is the utilization of Ontology-Based Engineering (OBE) methods, processes, and tools. However, implementing OBE has presented challenges related to modeling, such as effectively managing lifecycles, workflows, and the sharing and reuse of models. To address these challenges, the authors have proposed theModels forManufacturing (MfM) methodology, which offers a novel way to modelmanufacturing systems with collaborative, extensible, and reusable characteristics. These characteristics align with the concept ofModel LifecycleManagement (MLM). This article highlights the difficulties faced by the aerospace industry when adopting models based on the entire product lifecycle, drawing parallels to the adoption of 3D modeling in the nineties. Furthermore, it explores how the MLM system proposed by the authors can effectively address these issues.
