The digitization of technologies in product manufacturing results in the availability of large amounts of process and product data. To gain knowledge from this data and fully leverage its potential, its structuring and semantically annotation is essential. This allows preserving the context of data generation and makes the data machine-readable and interpretable. Contextualization is the key to generating FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data. The documentation of research activities and provenance of generated data is usually achieved by protocols. However, there is often a tension between the desire to document data generation in a structured, semantically rich form and the need to design research and process parameters flexibly as experimental conditions change. To resolve these contradictions, a dynamic model is described that allows to document research activities and implemented into a knowledge and research data management system to resolve these contradictions. The model allows a formal, semantic representation of research steps, parameters and gathered data, while also providing flexibility in the generation of protocol templates and individual experiments through the reuse of semantic building blocks. The approach is carried out within the context of a large collaborative research center, showcasing its use in managing and providing data for heterogeneous research tasks, documentation, and data types across interdisciplinary projects.

The case study presented in this paper can be argued to embody the representation of two dominant discourses that frame the persistent problem of lack of African research visibility in global knowledge systems. The first proceeds from a deficit perspective, suggesting endemic dysfunctions within in-country research systems, while the second recognizes potential systemic injustices, which are deemed to create unequal opportunities for knowledge production and dissemination for African scholars. Four selected interventions from the case study are analyzed using a social justice framework, developed in the paper, that synthesizes these two critical perspectives. It was found that all but one of the interventions emanate from a country deficit discourse and that the actions taken tend mainly to ameliorate, not challenge this perspective. The paper concludes by demonstrating through the social justice lens why the African research visibility issue continues to persist and hints that counter narratives initiated by the case study could offer an alternative outcome.

The modern information landscape is flooded with fake and fabricated stories that are designed to mislead. It is especially the proliferation of socialmedia platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, etc., that have become breeding grounds for these deceptive narratives. The effect is severe and wide-ranging and may impact individuals, organisations, and communities. It is particularly younger people and students who are susceptible to misinformation as they are known for their heavy social media use. One way to combat the spreading of misinformation and its associated negative consequences is to increase fake news awareness levels. In this study, a fake news awareness measuring instrument was developed to assess the awareness and literacy levels of a selected group of university students. The main objective was to determine whether students could recognise fake news stories. The results of the survey also highlighted information on various other aspects associated with fake news, e.g. the spreading of fake news, guidelines on how to educate people about fake news, general behaviour, and news preferences of students. The study revealed that students are indeed in many cases not able to identify whether a news article is fake or real. A set of recommendations is offered to increase the fake news literacy levels of younger social media users.

Collaborative design is a key element in Product/System development. However, delivering true collaboration in multidisciplinary teams is challenging. Feedback systems are one of the solutions to improve collaboration;although teams normally receive feedback on outcomes, the collaboration process itself is neglected. During a PBL course, 40 engineers from 22 disciplines and 12 countries were distributed in six teams. In addition to receiving outcome feedback, we used Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques to provide process feedback for half of the design teams whereas the other half only received outcome feedback. At the same time, we employed a pre-trained Machine Learning (ML) technique to compare the teams' progress through teams' communication and sentiment analysis. Our results show that;(i) adding process feedback in the early stages of the design process enhances the collaborative design. (ii) ML algorithms can predict the progress. We suggest further research using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and supervised ML techniques for designing a new AI team-mate and mentoring assistant, as well as fostering Human-AI interaction styles via MI methods.

Critical migration studies have highlighted the risks of using digital technologies in the space of migration, underlying its implication for migrants' privacy rights, government surveillance, and information capitalism. In U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Tucson sector, stretching across Arizona, one of the busiest and most dangerous borders in the USA, volunteer organizations work to prevent the death of unauthorized migrants undertaking the journey through the Sonoran Desert. Volunteers, typically elderly, study and map migratory trails to provide water where it is likely to be found by migrants. They employ a combination of paper-based and dated, yet sophisticated technologies for gathering essential data to support this potentially life-saving work. In this article, we discuss their information and data practices, and we argue that their approach is an example of the application of an ethics of care to an informational space. Based on interviews and participant observations, we suggest that volunteers' general refusal to adopt more efficient data practices indicate both a resistance to change from already ingrained practices, as well as an application of caring ethics within the field of migration and information for the pursuit of social justice.

Phishing attacks continue to thrive despite continued efforts to inform citizens about their dangers and how to enact protective behaviours. Demonstrations have been shown to help enhance student learning in various disciplines, yet these have not been explored in a security context with lay individuals. We designed and delivered a Breach and Attack Demonstration (BAD) of spear phishing to 10 lay younger adults (18-24) to explore their perceptions of this method as an awareness tool and to capture any long-lasting impressions. Based on semi-structured interviews and survey responses 6 months after the demonstrations, we found that participants were surprised at how simple spear phishing attacks were to enact and this impression persevered 6 months following the BAD. We discuss the benefits and drawbacks of using BADs as an interactive awareness tool, concluding with recommendations for the design of such demonstrations for lay individuals.

Gig work presents a promising prospect for youth in developing countries by offering a flexible and economically viable alternative in the face of high unemployment rates. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) looks to uncover practical strategies and best practices to facilitate the creation of gigwork opportunities for youth in developing countries. It poses two research questions, namely: What gig work opportunities exist for youth in a developing country context, and what practices and strategies facilitate the creation of these opportunities? The SLR identifies a number of gig work jobs and groups them into five categories including online consulting, gig work, online micro-tasking, and social media content production. Eleven strategies and two practices for fostering the creation of gig work opportunities in developing countries are identified from the 20 articles included in the study. The strategies range from providing training, improving infrastructure, enacting legislation, raising awareness, to governments creating gig work opportunities by putting tasks on these platforms or creating their own platforms. Consequently, the SLR calls for future research to evaluate the outcomes of strategies and practices implemented to unlock gigwork opportunities for youth in developing countries. The SLR also suggests further research into better mapping the exact type of skills necessary to take advantage of the promising gig work opportunities available.

This study explores the limitations of traditional Cybersecurity Awareness and Training (CSAT) programs and proposes an innovative solution using Generative Pre-Trained Transformers (GPT) to address these shortcomings. Traditional approaches lack personalization and adaptability to individual learning styles. To overcome these challenges, the study integrates GPT models to deliver highly tailored and dynamic cybersecurity learning experiences. Leveraging natural language processing capabilities, the proposed approach personalizes training modules based on individual trainee profiles, helping to ensure engagement and effectiveness. An experiment using a GPT model to provide a real-time and adaptive CSAT experience through generating customized training content. The findings have demonstrated a significant improvement over traditional programs, addressing issues of engagement, dynamicity, and relevance. GPT-powered CSAT programs offer a scalable and effective solution to enhance cybersecurity awareness, providing personalized training content that better prepares individuals to mitigate cybersecurity risks in their specific roles within the organization.

Change management is a key process in the Product Development Process. In a context of availability of large data on the process through Enterprise information Systems like PDM (Product Data Management) or PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems, the structured data network can be analysed to identify key feature to improve the process performance. In this work, we propose a multi-layer network to engineering change management that models product, organisation and change facets together. Once build, this network is analysed with some classical graph tools to identify some key features allowing to elicit some organisational behaviours. This approach is applied on two pedagogic examples.

The design and adoption of socio-culturally appropriate technologies are critical to addressing the environmental sustainability crisis in the Global South. However, implementing technology-based sustainability initiatives has been shown to be problematic, with many such projects failing to achieve their stated objectives or have any meaningful impact at scale. This is because such endeavours are complex, multifaceted, and interdisciplinary and require a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between tradition, technology, politics, climate, and sustainability. Such projects are also likely to be highly socio-culturally contextual and thus require a deep understanding of the specific context and culture within which they will be built and deployed. This paper presents the results of an ongoing research project in Rajasthan, India, where filtering water pots (G-filters) are used to purify waste-laden water. The water pots are made by the traditional Kumhar potter caste and are used extensively for domestic and agricultural use in the local community. Initial results indicate that these pots fulfil both criteria required for impactful technology-based projects in the Global South;i.e., they are technically effective and socio-culturally appropriate for the context in which they are being used. The paper makes various recommendations based on our findings to date and provides details of the next stages of the project.
