Internet-of-Things(IoT)-based edge computing in smart factories, smart grid, agriculture, constructions and autonomous vehicles include service-oriented gateways that connect with the cloud, perform machine-to-machine communication, often transmiting large amount data up and down the network, performing time-sensitive processing and involving intelligent local decision-making. In view of a sharp increase in cyberattacks today targeting edge computing, these gateways need to provide digital signing and key negotiation for ensuring reliable data sources, trusted applications and authentic devices and connections. In contrast to common perception, we show that post-quantum cryptography methods do not necessitate extensive modification to adopt in such environments;further, the cryptography algorithm's hardness is preserved while fulfilling the IoT device's resource limitations. In particular, we demonstrate an efficient method and an implementation on a 32-bit ARMCortex-M4, 64KB memory microcontroller, based on post-quantum key encapsulation mechanisms (KEMs), for secure communication and authentication in an industrial IoT environment.

Transitioning to a circular economy fundamentally changes the traditional, linear economic model. Establishing circular strategies requires adapting and expanding the roles within the value system to realize the decoupling of economic growth and resource consumption. In particular, a combination of several value-retention strategies implemented in parallel can increase the ecological and economic potential of circular economy. However, there is a lack of description of this type of value system in relation to the new required activities, and the resulting material and information flows within the value system. For this reason, literature research and exploratory analyses through expert workshops were used to identify variants for implementing the value system. The results include the definition of five possible variants of a value system for the parallel implementation of value-retention circular strategies in the white goods industry. The five possible variants are necessary to enable sustainable collaboration strategies between different stakeholders from which all of the stakeholders can benefit. The new activities for enabling the various value-retention strategies, e.g., product evaluation or disassembly, are distributed differently across the stakeholders of the value systems per variant. This leads to distinct material and information flows per variant.

In the context of increasing environmental concerns and the push towards sustainable practices, the recycling and repurposing of battery systems have become imperative. This paper presents a concept for the automated disassembly of battery systems from pack to module using artificial intelligence. The focus is on the design and process sequence of two independently designed systems. One system is responsible for the separation and screwing processes within the dismantling of battery systems, while the other system handles the removal of corresponding battery components. The generation of data for linking artificial intelligence with dismantling systems and networking using digital twins is a topic that requires investigation and practical implementation through several experiments in the future.

The manufacturing industry has heavily relied on robotic automation since the third industrial revolution. However, traditional robots struggle to adapt to the variability of modern production demands. Collaborative robots (cobots) offer a solution by providing flexible automation tailored to personalized manufacturing requirements. Human-robot collaboration (HRC) systems, particularly beneficial for small-scale manufacturing, integrate human capabilities with technological advancements. Cobots enhance productivity, offer ergonomic benefits, and facilitate automation transformation through connectivity and data analytics. Effective communication between resources is crucial for enabling the execution of shared subtasks and ensuring the safety and efficiency of collaborative assembly. This study proposes integrating ontology with cobot execution programs to enhance collaborative assembly operations. The ontology encompasses knowledge related to the products to be assembled, the HRC environment (including resources, tools, and regions), and the relations between these entities and monitoring data. Additionally, establishing a connection between cobot controllers enables the seamless exchange of commands for coordinated execution. By enabling communication between resources, collaborative assembly tasks can be executed either sequentially or simultaneously, monitored for progress, and adjusted as necessary without manual intervention. The proposed approach is applied in the human-robot collaborative mold assembly for cobot execution. The integration of ontology simplifies cobot programming, modifications according to order changes, and facilitates cobot execution control based on monitoring results. This study contributes to streamline cobot execution and decision-making processes in manufacturing environments by incorporating ontology-based knowledge into cobot execution programs.

When industry and society face major challenges, a strong and competent workforce is increasingly crucial. Throughout past crises and industrial revolutions, people have been at the core of supporting "business as usual", while simultaneously driving change. European industry is repositioning contemporary work towards value-based sustainability, resilience, and human-centricity, radically changing the workforce's task and skill needs. Unfortunately, there is a lack of understanding of which skills employees need to acquire to contribute to achieving a shift to Industry 5.0. This paper addresses this knowledge gap by putting forth the concept of an "Industry 5.0 Skills Palette", offering an overall understanding of the skills needed by the future workforce. The Industry 5.0 Skills Palette was developed through a literature review and expert interviews. It is divided into four main dimensions, i.e. Resilient Manufacturing, Green Industrial Transformation, Digital Human Work, and Technological Systems, and eighteen skills areas. The paper is a unique effort to identify essential skills required for the transition and successful integration of Industry 5.0. The holistic Industry 5.0 Skills Palette goes beyond previous studies, characterized by a limited focus on technological skills i.e. one pillar of Industry 5.0.

Digital twins, which enable the creation of virtual replicas of physical entities to simulate temporal changes and forecast future scenarios, have become increasingly vital in sectors such as logistics and traffic management. The deployment of digital twins can significantly enhance the efficiency of maritime operations and cargo handling, while also facilitating the strategic planning of road networks through the optimization of traffic flow and reduction of congestion. Recent advancements in international standards, particularly ISO 23247, have set forth comprehensive guidelines for the reference architecture, digital representation, and data exchange protocols of digital twins within the manufacturing sector. In this context, our study seeks to extend these standards to include applications in port logistics and traffic systems. This paper will offer practical guidelines for each specified domain through detailed case studies. Our approach entails a systematic method in which the necessary information for simulations is categorized. This is followed by a clear definition of the operational mechanisms of these simulations, culminating in the implementation of the simulation models. These models are crafted to optimize the scheduling processes for ships and cargo equipment, as well as to improve the management of traffic flow.

The core of lean is formed by two key principles: continuous improvement (CI) and respect for people (RFP). Although lean holds a lot of promise to improve operations, the implementation success rate outside of Japan is still fairly low. Recent literature shows that one of the main reasons for failed implementation is a lack and poor understanding of RFP principle, which results in reduced people involvement. This paper aims to improve the understanding by exploring the prevailing discourses in lean literature related to the RFP principle to distil dominant themes which break this complex concept into facets that could be systematically studied. For this purpose, we propose a systematic literature review of 26 articles published in 21 peer-reviewed international journals that explicitly discuss RFP principle. Four themes emerged from the analysis, and three RFP facets were distilled from these themes. The analysis shows that all of RFP facets must be in place to enhance people's involvement in problem-solving. A specific relation between the facets is observed that needs to be acknowledged when RFP is considered. The results also show that RFP enables CI and complements it as an intervention in its own right. While this study is far from exhaustive, we believe the results will introduce additional clarity and improve the utility of the complex RFP principle for research and practice.

The field of industrial sustainability is rapidly expanding with new concepts and frameworks emerging almost daily. At the same time, mature ones are being used in new applications and combined with new technologies and methodologies. While these developments are promising, the ambitions, scale, and speed of the change required to meet sustainability goals urgently need to increase. To accelerate industrial sustainability research and its impact, experts were invited to discuss research challenges in a webinar series focused on ten priority areas for eco-efficient and circular industrial systems. This paper presents the research challenges discussed to share sustainability practices, stimulate collaborations, and inspire change for more impactful applied research and knowledge transfer to industry.

The adoption of Product Service Systems (PSS) offers an innovative perspective to promote sustainability. However, assessing the overall impact of PSS requires an accurate evaluation of their economic, environmental and social implications. Specifically, there is a need to quantify these impacts. Therefore, this study focuses on the analysis of quantitative methods and methodologies to assess the sustainability of PSS solutions, considering the economic, environmental and social dimensions of the Triple Bottom Line (TBL). Through a literature review, the different quantitative methods and methodologies were analysed and the main economic, environmental and social sustainability indicators evaluated by them were collected and discussed. The review shed light on five aspects (i.e., life cycle perspective, stochasticity, TBL comprehensiveness, TBL interdependencies, and interpretation of the results) that are critical for a comprehensive and holistic assessment of PSS sustainability. These aspects are widely discussed and future research directions for the PSS sustainability assessment are suggested.

This paper introduces a second-order adaptive network model for simulating political opinion dynamics, considering cognitive, affective, and social factors. The model, grounded in political psychology and communication theories, illustrates how individuals' opinions evolve in response to external stimuli such as political parties and media. It also explores the impact of individuals' reasoning abilities and initial viewpoints on their rationality and cognitive flexibility. Through simulation experiments, the paper demonstrates the model's capacity to generate realistic outcomes such as homophily and polarization phenomena. It further discusses the model's implications for mitigating misinformation spread and reducing polarization in political opinion dynamics, identifying key influencing factors and potential interventions. The paper contributes to computational politics by offering an innovative approach to modeling individual and collective opinion formation processes, acknowledging the complexity and adaptivity of cognitive, affective, and social dynamics.
