In the additive manufacturing process of Powder Bed Fusion of Metals using a Laser Beam (PBF-LB/M), the removal of support structures represents a costly step, predominantly carried out manually in current industrial practices. Particularly challenging are areas of the parts where tools for support removal struggle to access. Therefore, in the data preparation of parts manufactured via PBF-LB/M, attempts are often made to orient the parts within the build chamber in such away that no supports are needed in the difficult-to-access areas. However, identifying these areas is error-prone and typically relies on manual evaluation by engineers. To reduce susceptibility to errors, this paper introduces an algorithm called the Accessibility Assessment Algorithm (AAA), which automatically evaluates the accessibility of parts. The algorithm is implemented and tested on ten parts. Five experts experienced in removing support structures from PBF-LB/M-printed parts are interviewed and asked to evaluate the same parts for inaccessible areas, and then to assess the calculation results of the AAA. Subsequently, the results regarding inaccessible areas are compared between the algorithm's assessment and the experts' evaluations. The results show a 70.5% agreement, indicating its effectiveness in assessing the accessibility of parts.

Business offerings based on the sale of services on top of products is always more diffused, disclosing the opportunity of defining new business models based on subscription or product performance. To remain competitive on the market, manufacturers are always more frequently relying on servitized business models, and nowadays an increasing number of studies is addressing this topic in terms of benefits for these companies and possible obstacles to a successful implementation. This paper wants to contribute to this research stream by focusing on the machinery that, due to the nature of their products and the financial exposure required for their production, need to carefully consider the structure of a servitized offering to make it profitable. By a mixed-methodology approach, literature review and empirical survey, the paper aims at listing and discussing the main barriers and challenges that these companies need to address to structure profitable servitized business offerings. The results demonstrate a strong alignment between the obstacles identified in the literature and those observed in the survey regarding the adoption of servitization in the machinery sector. However, it appears that the literature has not extensively focused on defining a strategy for the collection and use of data in support of product and service offerings. In contrast, the survey findings indicate that practitioners do not highlight on incentivizing customer in the co-creation value process and ensuring coordination in the ecosystem.

In today's dynamic business environment, transformative procurement is essential for organizations to adapt to changing market conditions and maintain competitiveness. While the Procurement 4.0 notion is still in its early stages, it is essential for large, medium, and small-sized enterprises, particularly in the energy sector, to possess a certain level of maturity in order to initiate the deployment of innovative and sophisticated procurement operations. Therefore, this work proposes the development of a fuzzy-rule-based model to assess the maturity level of procurement. This is accomplished through the creation of a fuzzy expert system that relies on criteria derived from four primary Procurement 4.0 components: modularity, resilience, agility, and human-centricity. Finally, the fuzzy maturity model is validated using a case study involving a company in the energy industry. By leveraging fuzzy logic modeling, the framework accommodates the inherent uncertainty and ambiguity in procurement operations, enabling organizations to make more informed decisions and optimize their procurement strategies. Through the case study and empirical validation, this work demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed framework in enhancing procurement functions and driving digital transformation in all industrial sectors.

The concept of "coopetition" in manufacturing value networks involves firms engaging in both collaboration and competition simultaneously This approach, while aiming to leverage the benefits of both, inherently introduces a paradox concerning value creation and capture. Within a value network, coopetition involves various entities such as suppliers, distributors, subcontractors, and even competitors working together to enhance overall value. Despite a surge in research on coopetition, there remains a disjointed understanding, with limited exploration of its dynamics within manufacturing contexts. To address this gap, our study constructs a system dynamics model using causal loop diagrams (CLD) derived from an in-depth literature review within the manufacturing sector. Our aim is to comprehensively elucidate the factors influencing co-opetitive relationships and dynamics in manufacturing value networks and business ecosystems. Furthermore, existing literature emphasizes the need for a multifaceted perspective on coopetition in manufacturing. Our model, developed through consultation of extensive manufacturing and business literature and CLD application, identifies key factors driving coopetition dynamics in manufacturing and business ecosystem contexts. It represents the first comprehensive content analysis of coopetition dynamics within manufacturing and business ecosystems, serving as a valuable resource for scholars and professionals in the manufacturing and management field. By examining interconnected elements in a causal loop framework specific to manufacturing and business ecosystems, our study reveals how dynamic factors influence co-opetitive outcomes in these ecosystems. The emerging Industry 5.0 paradigm is initiating changes in different aspects of manufacturing businesses as well as in their products and services. Industry 5.0 pillars - human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience - are guiding these changes with the intent to provide a smarter, greener, and digitalized society and market. The human-centric pillar aims to bring people back to the centre of attention by using the advances of Industry 4.0 technologies. Previous studies have shown a tendency for new services development based on Industry 5.0. This paper aims to show the development from product-related services influenced by digital technologies to human-centric product-related services. Data used for this study was obtained through a Digital Servitization Survey in 2023, and the dataset represents the current state of the Republic of Serbia's manufacturing sector. The main findings of this paper show a correlation between human-centricity and digital technologies, human-centricity and product-related services with the use of digital technologies, and their influence on firms' annual turnover.

The first steps of artificial intelligence (AI) in Thailand can be traced back to Thai university course material from 1975. Around themid-1980s, the Thai government started to acknowledge the potential of AI technology to become a driver for economic development. Yet, despite the benefits of monitoring AI's domestic developments, such research remains scarce for Thailand. This paper seeks to fill this current literature gap through offering a centralised compilation of information about the unfolding of AI technology in Thailand from its beginnings to this day. Given the scarcity in written forms of publicly available knowledge, we enrich the available literature with three qualitative expert interviews, and we contextualise Thailand's case within the broader Southeast Asian and Asian context. Thailand is regularly overlooked or marginalised when we 'think AI'. However, we will understand that Thailand's role in AI's history is critical if willing to 'thicken' existing descriptions of AI. Reductivist understandings of AI might speak of a technology transfer of the 1970s from the Occident to Thailand and stop there. However, firstly, this obscures China's growing influence over Thailand's AI development since 2015. Secondly, this obscures Thailand's necessarily participative role in AI's development-both within Thailand and abroad-which thus contrasts with the understanding where Thailand would purely be subjected to 'foreign' influence in this technology transfer. Reviewing the history of AI in Thailand allows to add critically missing layers to our currently too partial understanding of the history of AI globally. We also hope to insufflate new air into this musty research avenue to further improve our understanding of Thailand's contemporary sociotechnical unfoldment.

The illegitimate automated usage of Internet services by web robots (bots) is an ongoing problem. While bots increase the cost of operations for service providers and can affect user satisfaction, e.g., in social media and games, the main problem is that some services should only be usable by humans, but their automated usage cannot be prevented easily. Currently, services are protected against bots using visual CAPTCHA systems, the de facto standard. However, they are often annoying for users to solve. Typically, CATPCHAs are combined with heuristics and machine-learning approaches to reduce the number of times a human needs to solve them. These approaches use request data like IP and cookies but also biometric data like mouse movements. Such detection systems are primarily closed source, do not provide any performance evaluation, or have unrealistic assumptions, e.g., that sophisticated bots only move the mouse in straight lines. Therefore we conducted an experiment to evaluate the usefulness of detection techniques based on mouse dynamics, request metadata, and a combination of both. Our findings indicate that biometric data in the form of mouse dynamics performs better than request data for bot detection. Further, training a mouse dynamic classifier benefits from external and not only website-specific mouse dynamics. Our classifier, which differentiates between artificial and human mouse movements, achieves similar results to related work under stricter and more realistic conditions.

This article is the result of a case study that arose from the need for a plastic injection moulding company to adapt to an increase in the number of injection moulding machines and moulds. The acquisition of a company and the consequent transfer of its production to a manufacturing unit in Portugal increased the internal diversity of the existing machines and moulds, resulting in a constant need for tool changes, which posed a daily challenge to the operators, both at a technical and safety level. The very high set-up times of the new machines compared to the existing ones and the company's increasing concern about accidents/incidents occurring during this phase of the process led to the need for action to reduce them. SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) was initially applied to two different machine ranges. The application of SMED on both machine ranges allowed the identification of several wastes along the process, which were eliminated or reduced through the application of lean tools such as 5S, Visual Management and Standard Work. After completing SMED, it was possible to verify improvements of 46.10% and 44.19%, respectively, in the set-up time of the two machine ranges. The survey results of the employees involved in mould set-up, which analysed their perception of the impact of each measure, showed a positive impact of all the measures implemented. Overall, 100% of the employees agreed that lean practices positively impacted their perception of safety.

The excessive use of motor vehicles in urban mobility has caused many negative impacts on both society and the environment in several cities around the world. Issues such as traffic congestion, noise, and air pollution caused by the excessive release of CO2 into the atmosphere, and inefficient use of public spaces make people more stressed, with cardiovascular and respiratory problems. In recent years, there has been much discussion about the use of bicycles as an alternative form of active and sustainable mobility, which not only does not contribute to pollution but also promotes physical activity. After categorizing cities considered bicycle-friendly by continent, the objective of this study is to evaluate if there are significant differences in the bike-friendliness index presented by these cities when compared by continent groups. Data were collected from the Global Bicycle Cities Index - GBCI for the year 2022. Indicators such as safety, infrastructure, events, critical mass, and availability of shared bicycles are considered, and the social network analysis tool using graphs from NetDraw (R) software is utilized. It is concluded that there are no significant differences among the available indices except related to the availability of shared bicycles.

Critical infrastructures are complex networks with physical, geographical, logical and cyber interdependencies whose disruption can cause serious impacts to citizenry and society. Meanwhile, the use of information and communications technology to manage physical processes in critical infrastructure assets has significantly increased their cyber attack surfaces. The increased threats have led to the creation of national and international cyber security agencies to promote awareness of cyber threats and coordinate responses to cyber attacks. In 2019, Italy set up the National Security Perimeter for Cyber, a regulatory construct that stipulates measures for guaranteeing the safety and security of public and private entities that provide essential functions and services. The law associated with the regulatory construct requires the covered entities to accurately describe their networks, information and communications technology systems and related services. The 2021 Italian legislation that established the National Cybersecurity Agency requires all National Security Perimeter for Cyber entities to inform the national agency about their assets. The National Cybersecurity Agency also collects detailed infrastructure information as well as reports about cyber attacks from the entities. This chapter describes an ongoing research effort that supports Italian legislative requirements. In particular, it demonstrates how the consequences of cyber threats can be assessed in complex scenarios using an agent-based simulator that evaluates the National Cybersecurity Agency model under ransomware and distributed-denial-of-service attacks on interconnected Italian infrastructures.
