There are many definitions of resilience. Their common core is that it is a response to unexpected or unforeseen changes and disturbances, and a capacity to adapt and respond to these changes. In the literature, many different concepts were identified to accompany resilience and help define or measure a system's resilience. These include flexibility, vulnerability, rapidity and robustness. However, these concepts are sometimes used interchangeably with resilience as there is a lack of clarification among them. In addition, the role of "lessons learnt" and "learning" after a disruption is somehow neglected in existing studies of resilience and system performance. This article aims to position resilience regarding these concepts, taking into account the system's experience after several disturbances. Schematic presentation of resilience-related concepts such as flexibility, rapidity, vulnerability and robustness are proposed. Additionally, an updated definition of resilience in a production system while considering the correlated concepts like vulnerability, robustness, flexibility, rapidity is proposed.

This paper proposes a method for estimating flood levels using a state-space model in order to figure out the time-series changes at locations without observation devices. The proposed method integrates water level observations and flood analysis simulation results from physical models to estimate accurate flood level and its expansion process in channels. The method uses observation time-series data from observation devices as monitoring data for flood levels, and compensates for the accuracy of conventional methods by correcting a flood analysis simulation with a state-space model to provide a highly accurate estimate of flood levels for the entire urban area. We apply this method to several flood events in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, to investigate its performance.

Situational disabilities and barriers of situational awareness have been shown to be significant potential hinderances to achieving situational awareness, both in the strategical and operational level, affecting first responders as well as volunteers and the general public. In previous research, two educational and awareness-raising disaster-related scenarios highlighting the effects of situational disabilities were presented. However, although being crafted based on input from experts and practitioners, it is important to ensure that these scenarios are realistic in the behaviour of the personas, and in the effects of the situational disabilities described. In addition, to make sure that they are relevant and representative is important, to ensure that they can be used for training and awareness-raising. Therefore, a validation workshop with researchers in ICT for Emergency Management has been organised and performed during a major international Emergency Management conference. Eight researchers took part in the workshop and participated in group discussions to provide their input, and concluded that the scenarios are realistic and relevant, while also proposing suggestions for further improvement.

With the evolving landscape of cybersecurity, forensic analysis has become increasingly pivotal, especially with the integration of machine learning (ML) techniques. However, the use of ML in cybersecurity, and especially in heap dump analysis is still in its infancy, both due to the lack of quality datasets and the difficulty of processing large-scale heap dumps collections. Another complex task lies in the transition from raw byte heap dump data into dense vector representations, or embeddings, that can be used with ML models. This paper addresses these challenges by introducing a novel methodology and the Mem2Graph tool for processing large-scale heap dumps collections. This method has been introduced while developing a novel approach to enhance the detection of session keys in OpenSSH heap dumps. Such a novel approach has significantly advanced the state of the art in predicting the location of keys in OpenSSH heap dumps. Importantly, it paves the way for automated ML applications that leverage the structure and embeddings from reconstructed memory graphs, opening new frontiers in both cybersecurity and data science.

Fresh light has been shone on the problem of digital inequality (DI) in recent years due to its expanding complexity and impact on society. An issue with DI research is the need for more reliable instruments to measure and gauge the DI status quo, which is critical for appropriate remedial measures and solutions. DI has several dimensions beyond traditional concepts, such as uneven access to modern technologies, insufficient digital literacy, and limited internet use. Measures of DI often ignore some subtle and hidden elements, including socio-economic status, digital literacy, and skill, giving an imprecise image of the differences among people. This paper utilises existing literature, builds on a theoretical framework developed earlier, and subsequently explores possible survey instruments to measure DI. The paper also emphasises the need for constant improvement of survey tools due to their dynamic nature, influenced by rapid technological changes, to capture the complexities of digital inclusion. The proposed instruments are a starting point that will fill a void and allow researchers in the area to conduct more empirical studies to test and validate the suitability of the instruments to better understand the phenomena for valid comparisons and multiple applications.

InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) is one of the most promising decentralized off-chain storage mechanisms, particularly relevant for blockchains, aiming to store the content forever, thus it is crucial to understand its composition, deduce actor intent and investigate its operation and impact. Beyond the network functionality that IPFS offers, assessing the quality of nodes, i.e. analysing and categorising node software and data, is essential to mitigate possible risks and exploitation of IPFS. To this end, in this work we took three daily snapshots of IPFS nodes within a month and analysed each node (by IP address) individually, using threat intelligence feeds. The above enabled us to quantify the number of potentially malicious and/or abused nodes. The outcomes lead us to consider using a filter to isolate malicious nodes from the network, an approach we implemented as a prototype and used for assessment of effectiveness.

This study evaluated the material intensity (i.e., the raw material requirements) of growing wind turbines by analyzing the correlation between wind turbine capacity and head weight. The research is based on a compositional evaluation of wind turbines using available literature and publicly available data. To determine the material intensity in relation to capacity, three best fit approximations, namely the average, linear, and power methods were utilized. The results show that as the capacity of wind turbines increases, so does the material intensity. However, further analysis suggests that in the 2-4 MW capacity range, the material intensity remained unchanged and might even decrease, while at larger capacities (6+MW) the material intensity clearly increases. The study emphasizes the importance of defining system boundaries and the need for a larger dataset to both improve accuracy and conduct further classifications. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the material intensity of wind turbines and highlights the potential impact of capacity growth on resource utilization.

Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), one of the most important problems in the logistics industry, aims to find the most suitable route for vehicles that meet the demands of customers. VRP is examined under various variants, and one of these variants, the Pickup and Delivery Problem, deals with the pickup demands as well as the delivery demands of the customers. This problem is divided into three main categories according to demand type and route structure: one-to-many-to-one problems, many-to-many problems, and one-to-one problems. In one-to-many-to-one problems, there are goods at the depot to be delivered to customers as well as goods at customers to be carried back to the depot. In many-to-many problems, one node can be the origin or destination point for a good, and multiple nodes can be the origin or destination point for each good, while in one-to-one problems, there is a single origin and a single destination point for each unique demand. Within the scope of this study, a general case of one-to-one problems is introduced, in which multiple vehicles are allowed to leave the depot with goods and return to the depot with undeliverable goods, and a customer can be both a pickup and delivery node at the same time. A mathematical model is developed for the problem to obtain the optimal solution for the test instances. The model is tested on 45 randomly generated test instances. The results show that 40 out of 45 instances were solved using a commercial solver within one-hour computation time limit.

Society today has witnessed a rapid increase in the prevalence of social media and popular content delivery websites such as Netflix and Spotify. As a result, through the way that people consume news and media, we are transitioning from a static media delivery model to a dynamic, personalized system which many are adapting and even enjoying the resulted changes. Personalized recommendations are mostly made with the help of the machine learning models embedded in recommendation systems (RS). It is important to examine these systems that are becoming very relevant in our daily lives, and to identify how we can either control or at least mitigate any harmful effects caused by these new systems. One of those prominent issues within RS is popularity bias, which stems from the nature of machine learning, which often prioritizes popularity over novelty. That is, machine learning methods tend to prioritizes being most correct rather than trying to find a truly fitting recommendation. Popularity bias is a main cause of echo chambers within the current media landscape, which unfortunately has led to less critical thinking and more divisiveness our communities. To counter this issue, we present a novel methodology that combines two existing methods proposed for sequential RS, aiming to reduce popularity bias without overly punish popular items. The result is a weighted RS that shows the promising ability to control the amount of popularity bias. The proposed system may be applied to multi-model hybrid RS, which would achieve personalized recommendations that support individual weighted preference between popularity and novelty.

Industrial symbiosis is increasingly recognised as a practical tool for companies to valorise their industrial surpluses and reduce the use of raw materials. This paper reports a comprehensive map of studies addressing the industrial symbiosis topic in the Italian context. The primary goal is to provide an overview of the existing literature for highlighting the main research trends and supporting both academics and practitioners in industrial symbiosis implementation. A sample of 37 published articles, gathered from Scopus using a systematic approach is carefully investigated. Through bibliometric analysis, the publication trend, most relevant/impactful authors, journals and keywords are determined. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first systematic review leveraging a bibliometric analysis on the topic under investigation. One of the main findings is that economic feasibility should be considered in future assessments to prevent industrial symbiosis pilot projects from remaining in a preliminary state. Lastly, this research, through the identification of research hotspots and gaps, serves as a valuable roadmap for directing future studies.
