The integration of cybersecurity into the circular economy is vital to ensuring the transition towards circular practices in Industry 4.0. While the importance of cybersecurity is acknowledged, there is a gap in the literature regarding its direct impact on the circular economy. This study addresses this gap by examining the relationship between cybersecurity and the circular economy from economic, social, and environmental perspectives. A multi-case study methodology was employed to assess the influence of cybersecurity on various indicators of the circular economy. The findings indicate a limited and sector-specific application. Notably, cybersecurity plays a significant role in enhancing process control and reducing uncertainty in industrial decision-making. Furthermore, by safeguarding cyber-physical systems, it ensures the safe operation of industrial systems, preventing physical damage to facilities and mitigating risks to individuals. Although it is assumed that these measures can mitigate risks of environmental pollution, our study does not confirm such effects and suggests a limited impact on environmental indicators.

This paper uses findings from two separate cases from different extended disaster situations: Hurricane Katrina's long-term healthcare impact and Community Health Workers' use to access minority communities in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the height of COVID-19. We explore using sensorized health interventions to increase positive health outcomes for at-risk communities and how these practices can subjugate the very people they intend to help. These cases are examined through the lenses of data doubles and surveillant assemblage. Acts of noncompliance to medical data collection standards and recommended interventions against one's body create subtle forms of dehumanization, a justification for further intervention, and a form of institutional control. We show how this plays out in diverse ways in extended disaster contexts.

This paper considers alternative revenue models for companies traditionally reliant on transactional sales models. The research question explores viable revenue strategies for a firm with a traditional transnational revenue model and wants to transition to a product-as-a-service-based revenue model. To understand the transition, the study employs a multi-stage methodology that includes assessing the product-service system and analytical tools for contextual understanding. Insights into different approaches and their practical applications were gained, with detailed analyses based on avatar mapping, lifecycle examination, and a total cost of ownership analysis that must be adapted for data scarcity. Where data is unavailable, the paper provides an approach to support collecting the necessary lifecycle costs to allow PaaS models to be developed based on the average spend profile.

Social enterprises are a hybrid type of organization that prioritize social and/or ecological values while needing to remain financially sustainable. Social enterprises face several challenges due to this hybrid business model, including aligning internal stakeholders in trading off between social/ecological values and financial value, and communicating these to external stakeholders. Using a single case-study approach, the present study demonstrates how Hoshin Kanri can be modified to fit the needs of social enterprises. The Hoshin Kanri diamond, a diamond shaped X-matrix, is developed by enriching the X-matrix to include terminal and instrumental values to ensure a better fit with the values-driven nature of social enterprises. The empirical data showed that this approach enabled the case company to prioritize according to its values and concurrently reflect on whether its activities were contributing to its social mission or merely necessary to ensure financial sustainability, contributing to both internal communication and communication with external stakeholders. The organization perceived this modified Hoshin Kanri approach as beneficial to help them articulate, prioritize and communicate objectives and activities that contributed to their growth in a way that felt congruent with their values.

This paper explores what skills and information are needed to meet the challenges of emergency production. In the near future, Operator 5.0 will operate within Industry 5.0, a sector focused on fostering innovation for all stakeholders, including the environment. One of the core pillars of Operator 5.0 is resilience which means being able to manage emergencies and uncertainties. Achieving this poses a challenge, as the industry struggles to acquire the necessary skills recommended. A framework for skills and information needed for Operator 5.0 to perform emergency production was suggested and used in a case study for face mask production. The results are as follows: 1) skills needed for emergency production are the cognitive/physical ability to perform a task and basic overall digital skills, and 2) the information needs are standards, instructions, and training materials. To create information the following demands on the system were suggested: Universal design, minimize unexpected events, productivity and product quality and safety. The framework could be used with existing contingency planning and preparatory emergency production to plan for better management of emergencies in Sweden or Europe.

IRfold: An RNA Secondary Structure Prediction Approach 1

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) sequences can be viewed as an ordered list of symbols representing the component nucleobases of the RNA sequence also known as its primary structure. The prediction of an RNA's secondary structure from its primary structure involves predicting which of its bases are most likely to pair. Computing the likelihood of each pair to obtain the set of pairings with the highest cumulative probability is computationally intractable. We propose a new approach, IRfold, which considers possible base pairings across secondary structures known as inverted repeats (IRs) and composes a secondary structure prediction. Our approach identifies the set of minimal thermodynamic free energy IRs that satisfies empirically determined thermodynamic and steric constraints. The proposed method is implemented as a constraint programming problem, which is benchmarked against state-of-the-art secondary structure prediction approaches on the bpRNA-1m dataset. Our results yield promising initial outcomes, and we discuss potential avenues for further investigation.

The financial industry is currently experiencing a substantial shift in its operating landscape because of the swift integration of technology. This transformation brings with it potential risks and challenges. Heightened occurrence of online fraud is one the key concerns for this sector, which has been exacerbated by the growing prevalence of online payment methods on e-commerce platforms and other websites. The identification of credit card fraud is a challenging task due to nature of imbalanced transactional data to detect and predict any fraudulent activities. In this context, this paper provides a unique approach to create synthetic dataset to tackle imbalanced issue for credit card fraud detection. The approach adopts Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) technique for balancing dataset. An experiment is performed using several ML models including SVM (Support Vector Machines), KNN (K-Nearest Neighbours), and Random Forest to demonstrate the feasibility of using synthetic data. In this study, we have combined resampling techniques like SMOTE for oversampling the minority class with ensemble methods and appropriate evaluation metrics like the F1-score to improve the imbalanced data. The result from the experiment compared with widely used public datasets to evaluate the model performance. The analysis reveals an imbalance in the real ULB (Universite Libre de Bruxelles) dataset, with the positive class (frauds) comprising a mere 0.172% of all transactions. The findings clearly show that the Random Forest model performs better than other modes with outstanding precision, recall, accuracy, and F1 score values to detect fraudulent transactions and reduce false positives.

Business Processes enable collaboration among various stakeholders, allowing different groups (people, organizations) towork together to achieve common goals. Therefore, optimizing Business Process Management (BPM) is essential for organizational success in today's dynamic business environment. However, traditional BPM methods often struggle in volatile execution environments characterized by rapid change, dynamic customer demands, and evolving market trends. Innovative strategies are needed to enhance BPM practices and increase the agility of collaborative business processes. To this end, a particularly promising approach is to use Large Language Models (LLM) agents (Artificial Intelligence conversational agents). These AI conversational agents can be integrated into a social media platform to ease the stakeholders' collaboration by supporting the co-construction, design, modification, execution, and monitoring of collaborative business processes. AI conversational agents in social media platforms democratize BPM by facilitating collaborative process design and execution, streamlining interactions, and fostering seamless communication and personalized assistance, thus enhancing agility.

This study summarizes a three-year project targeting dental component manufacturing sites. The target inspection departments have always conducted manual inspections twice each. This department wanted to be performed automatically at least once by introducing an automatic inspection machine. We have two problems that need to be solved. The first is to equalize the judgment criteria that differ from one inspection operator to another, and the second is to develop an automatic inspection tool with the same accuracy level as the inspection operator's judgment criteria. However, the target product, a rotary tool for dental treatment (diamond bar), has diamond particles attached to its tip;every part is slightly different. Therefore, creating an inspection tool with a simple threshold setting was impossible. In this study, we developed an automatic inspection tool using machine learning, and at the same time, we developed an inspection training tool to equalize operators' skills. Each tool was repeatedly improved through verification experiments. In addition, we developed feedback rules for the results obtained from the training tools to the training data for the machine learning model to improve the accuracy of the discriminant model. Furthermore, we have proposed a labeling tool that establishes criteria for judging whether a product is quality or defective in consideration of the introduction of new products, thereby realizing the continuous introduction of products and the stabilization of inspection operations.

For shipyards and offshore construction yards delivering highly customized and complex products via an engineer-to-order (ETO) manufacturing approach, the importance of logistics performance is increasing. This is occurring because of lower profit margins and more challenging market environments, especially in the Norwegian yard industry. However, yard logistics has not yet received adequate academic attention, and there is a lack of knowledge on how to address the current need for more cost-efficient logistics at yards. Therefore, this paper aims to develop and structure knowledge on yard logistics. Via a multiple case study of eight Norwegian yards, this paper builds on empirical evidence to establish a definition and description of yards as logistics systems in ETO manufacturing. Specifically, the paper outlines the constituents and main activities of yard logistics and describes the key characteristics of yard logistics. Furthermore, a classification model is developed to differentiate between the logistics requirements of three main types of yards: fabrication yards, outfitting yards, and service yards. This classification helps in understanding the specific logistics needs and challenges faced by different types of yards, contributing to the academic literature and providing practical insights for practitioners to enhance yard logistics performance.
