Nowadays products extend their capabilities towards changing their configurations in order to cover multiple usage needs. They may be named transformable products and have not been taken into consideration in early design stages yet. In this paper, a proactive definition of the product is provided with transformation intrinsic properties. The formalization leads to an architecture. This enables developing a transformable product from two ordinary non-evolving objects. Different configurations and transformation processes have been set and implemented within a CAD tool to design a transformable product. A new paradigm is thus initiated, which will lead to efficient and dynamic design of transformable product.

Cracking-resistant password vaults have been recently proposed with the goal of thwarting offline attacks. This requires the generation of synthetic password vaults that are statistically indistinguishable from real ones. In this work, we establish a conceptual link between this problem and steganography, where the stego objects must be undetectable among cover objects. We compare the two frameworks and highlight parallels and differences. Moreover, we transfer results obtained in the steganography literature into the context of decoy generation. Our results include the infeasibility of perfectly secure decoy vaults and the conjecture that secure decoy vaults are at least as hard to construct as secure steganography.

Many manufacturing companies have limited insight into the complete life cycle of their products. Insight that is necessary to manage the environmental impacts associated with the company's operation. One possible solution to this challenge is to apply emerging sensor technology for communicating with products. Despite the current trend of digitalization and use of sensors in the manufacturing industry, there is little attention given to how product communication may improve environmental sustainability. We propose a framework on how product communication can facilitate improved life cycle management, by contributing with needed information for improved value chain insight, design for environment and end-of-life management.

The main goal of this study is to make a production schedule considering users' demand about due date and price in mass customization. For minimizing the total tardiness, a proposed method using Combinatorial Auction is applied to develop an optimal plan in planning phase. In operational phase, a technique for inserting additional orders at idle time is proposed using Single Auction approach. To evaluate effectiveness of the proposed approaches, computer experiments are conducted.

Agri-food supply chains are subjected to many sources of uncertainty. If these uncertainties are not managed properly, they can have a negative impact on the agri-food supply chain (AFSC) performance, its customers, and the environment. In this sense, collaboration is proposed as a possible solution to reduce it. For that, a conceptual framework (CF) for managing uncertainty in a collaborative context is proposed. In this context, this paper seeks to answer the following research questions: What are the existing uncertainty sources in the AFSCs? Can collaboration be used to reduce the uncertainty of AFSCs? Which elements can integrate a CF for managing uncertainty in a collaborative AFSC? The CF proposal is applied to the weather source of uncertainty in order to show its applicability.

"The most profound technologies are those that disappear... They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it" wrote computer scientist and visionary Mark Weiser nearly 25 years ago in his essay "The Computer for the 21st Century." It turns out he was right: in the age of "Industry 4.0", digital technologies are the core driver for the manufacturing transformation. In fact, the introduction of such technologies allows companies to find solutions capable to turn increasing complexity into opportunities for ensuring sustainable competitiveness and profitable growth. Nonetheless, the effective implementation in manufacturing still depends on the state of practice: it may slow down, or even worst, may prevent from implementation. Indeed, we assume that a minimum level of capabilities is required before implementing the digital technologies in a company. Based on this concern, our research question is "are manufacturing companies ready to go digital?". This paper wants to illustrate a "tool" to answer this question by building a maturity assessment method to measure the digital readiness of manufacturing firms. Based on the inspiring principles of the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) framework, we propose a model to set the ground for the investigation of company digital maturity. Different dimensions are used to assess 5 areas in which manufacturing key processes can be grouped: (1) design and engineering, (2) production management, (3) quality management, (4) maintenance management and (5) logistics management. Thus, the maturity model provides a normative description of practices in each area and dimension, building a ranked order of practices (i.e. from low to high maturity). A scoring method for maturity assessment is subsequently defined, in order to identify the criticalities in implementing the digital transformation and to subsequently drive the improvement of the whole system. This contribution presents a Model-driven Architecture (MDA) inspired strategy for the automation of digital hardware design starting at specification level and targeting RT-level. This strategy defines a structured approach with is superior to code generation using scripts, print statements or template engines directly targeting ASCII files. As part of this strategy, we implemented intermediate models named Models-of-Things (MoTs) for formalizing specification data which have a dependency on the design objects specified. We further implemented a Model-of-Design (MoD) for hardware design related modeling, and a Model-of-View (MoV) for target view generation. For the transformations between our intermediate models, we use a template based approach. These templates are executed and generate more concrete models utilizing information from more abstract models. The term model here describes instances of Metamodels in the terminology of MDA and must not be mixed up with simulation and synthesis models such as VHDL RTL models. The template which guides MoD generation is called Template-of- Design. On one hand, the Template-of-Design (ToD) captures the (micro-) architecture and on the other hand, it retrieves MoT data to automate creation of the design that meets the specification. The Template-of-Design is Python code - as all our framework is implemented in Python - and uses generated APIs to simplify (micro-) architecture construction. In contrast templates for classical template engines, the Template-of-Design generates a model and not an ASCII File. To generate the final view, a so-called Template-of-View (ToV) is used. It is also encoded as Python code, traverses the Model-of-Design and creates the MoV. This Model-of-View is in many aspects similar to Abstract Syntax Trees utilized in language parsing. As a promising technology with increased adoption in recent years, Internet of Things (IoT) realizes ubiquitous interconnection of physical devices through internet, opening doors for building powerful industrial applications by leveraging the advances in sensor technology and wireless networks. IoT technologies can be viewed as enablers for smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0. This review paper focuses on applications of IoT in manufacturing, which is also known as Industrial Internet of Things IIoT. To that end, technologies relevant to the application of IoT in manufacturing, such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs), smart sensors, big data analytics, and cloud computing are discussed. A service oriented architecture (SOA) based four-layer model for realizing IoT applications in manufacturing is proposed. Finally, a review of the state of art of IoT applications in manufacturing including shop floor automation, predictive maintenance, energy aware manufacturing, and smart workers is presented with relevant industry use cases.

Online interactions between unknown parties are increasingly common. This is particularly exemplary in Virtual Organizations (VO). A VO is understood as a permanent or temporary alliance of enterprises that share their resources and skills to achieve specific business goals (collaboration opportunity). In this sense, the lack of trust between partners is seen as an hindrance to the VO's operation. Thus, reputation systems can be applied to trust establishment and management among VO's partners. Therefore, this paper presents a taxonomy to classify and compare trust and reputation systems applied to VO's context. The taxonomy is based on literature studies regarding characteristics observed through a systematic review process. In order to evaluate the proposed taxonomy, it was applied to trust and reputation systems obtained through a systematic review process. Finally, according the presented results, it is possible to note a gap concerning reputation systems applied to the context of VO and Cloud Computing integration.

Buffer management is not of a great concern when there is a perfect match between demand and supply. Demand represents the requirement for resources, and supply represents the collective capability of the resources to fulfill the requirements. A perfect match would then represent that supply can fulfill demand without any buffers involved, such as materials prepared in advance or capacity not being fully loaded. Such a perfect match is usually not possible to achieve since demand is frequently difficult to predict and the agility of the supply is limited. As a consequence, supply cannot perfectly match demand which may result in insufficient delivery performance. Different types of buffers may be employed to improve performance but they should only be used when the contribution of a buffer is greater than the cost of it. Hence, management of buffers is an important part of manufacturing planning and control (MPC) in order to mitigate such imbalances in pursuit of a competitive supply. The purpose here is therefore to define a framework for MPC that reflects the significance of buffers. To actually establish competitive supply is a complex challenge and four management perspectives are identified to support the balancing of supply with demand. Buffer management is here defined based on the intersection of these four management perspectives related to the transformation flow: the resources employed in the flow, the risk involved in the flow, the decision making related to the flow, and finally the planning and control to balance the flow.
