Binary code fingerprinting is a challenging problem that requires an in-depth analysis of binary components for deriving identifiable signatures. Fingerprints are useful in automating reverse engineering tasks including clone detection, library identification, authorship attribution, cyber forensics, patch analysis, malware clustering, binary auditing, etc. In this paper, we present BINSIGN, a binary function fingerprinting framework. The main objective of BINSIGN is providing an accurate and scalable solution to binary code fingerprinting by computing and matching structural and syntactic code profiles for disassemblies. We describe our methodology and evaluate its performance in several use cases, including function reuse, malware analysis, and indexing scalability. Additionally, we emphasize the scalability aspect of BINSIGN. We perform experiments on a database of 6 million functions. The indexing process requires an average time of 0.0072 s per function. We find that BINSIGN achieves higher accuracy compared to existing tools.

Due to increasingly required flexibility in manufacturing systems, adaptation of monitoring and control to changing context such as reconfiguration of devices becomes more important. Referring to the usage of structured information on the Web, digital twin models of manufacturing data can be seen as knowledge graphs that constantly need to be aligned with the physical environment. With a growing number of smart devices participating in production processes, handling these alignments manually is no longer feasible. Yet, the growing availability of data coming from operations (e.g. process events) and contextual sources (e.g. equipment configurations) enables machine learning to synchronize data models with physical reality. Common knowledge graph learning approaches, however, are not designed to deal with both, static and time-dependent data. In order to overcome this, we introduce a representation learning model that shows promising results for the synchronization of semantics from existing manufacturing knowledge graphs and operational data.

The recent advancements of manufacturing towards the Industry 4.0 paradigm should be supported by the effective training of industrial workers in order to align their skills to the new requirements of companies. Therefore, the evaluation of the training is becoming in this context increasingly important, given also the possibility of exploiting a huge amount of data from the shop floor about the workers' activities. These data - indeed - can be properly collected and analysed so as to provide real-time indications about the workers' performances and an evolving classification of their skills. In order to pursue this objective, a solution can be represented by the integration of semantic technologies with training evaluation models. For this reason, the paper aims at presenting a Training Data Evaluation Tool (TDET), which is based on the integration of a Training Evaluation Ontology (TEO) with a Training Analytics Model (TAM) for the definition of the skill levels of the workers. The main components and features of the TDET are provided in order to show its suitability towards the collection of data from the shop floor and their subsequent elaboration in summary indicators to be used by the management of the company. Finally, the implications and next steps of the research are discussed.

Volunteers can be a valuable support for disaster management. Disaster management must be able to coordinate volunteers in order to benefit from their support. Interactive, collaborative, and mobile technologies have the potential to overcome the challenges involved in integrating volunteers into crisis and disaster management. This paper presents the ENSURE system, designed to effectively integrate volunteers for an improved approach to disaster management. The system supports the aid forces in recruiting, managing, activating, and coordinating volunteers in the event of a large-scale emergency. To achieve this, ENSURE provides necessary functions such as volunteer registration, volunteer profiles, sending alerts, and volunteer activation (via the mobile app). The system uses a subscription-based approach in which the volunteers agree to take part in an emergency operation by responding to an alert. The system architecture provides technical insights into how to implement crowdtasking systems. It contains seven logical components to provide the necessary features. It was designed to ensure scalability, performance, and availability. The results of a first comprehensive evaluation of ENSURE, which was performed as a large-scale exercise directed by the disaster relief forces in Berlin, were, without exception, positive in all three evaluation areas: efficiency & security, clarity & usability, reliability & availability.

The development of tools and methods supporting the identification of Industrial Symbiosis opportunities is of utmost importance to unlock its full potential. Knowledge repositories have proven to be powerful tools in this sense, but often fail mainly due to poor contextualization of information and lack of general applicability (out of the boundaries of specific areas or projects). In this work, a novel approach to the design of knowledge repositories for Industrial Symbiosis is presented, based on the inclusion and categorization of tacit knowledge as well as on the combination of mimicking and input-output matching approaches. The results of a first usability test of the proposed tool are also illustrated.

We have developed the Hydrogeological information System (HgIS). Its purpose is to load data from available data sources of any kind, to visualize and analyze data and to implement simple models. HgIS is mostly built upon the Pentaho business intelligence (BI) platform. HgIS uses only some components of BI in comparison to enterprise BI solutions. Adequacy and limitation of data warehousing and BI application for groundwater data is discussed. Data extraction, transformation and loading is focused on integration of wide variety of structured and semi-structured data. Data warehouse uses a hybrid snowflake/star schema. Inmon's paradigm is used because data semantics is known and the volume of data is limited. HgIS is data agnostic, database agnostic, scalable and interoperable. The architecture of the system corresponds to a spatial business intelligence solution (GeoBI) - a combination of BI and geographic information systems (GIS). Groundwater practitioners have worked with GIS software for decades but BI technologies and tools have not previously been applied to groundwater data.

Malware targeting mobile devices is an ever increasing threat. The most insidious type of malware resides entirely in volatile memory and does not leave a trail of persistent artifacts. Such malware requires novel detection and capture methods in order to be reliably identified, analyzed and mitigated. This chapter proposes malware categorization and detection techniques based on measurable system side-effects observed in an exploited mobile device. Using the Stagefright family of exploits as a case study, common system side-effects produced as a result of attempted exploitation are identified. These system side-effects are leveraged to trigger volatile memory (i.e., RAM) collection by memory acquisition tools (e.g., LiME) to enable analysis of the malware.

In the design of both leisure as well as professional boats, the experience of the boat designers and builders traditionally play a central role. To reach the desired customer satisfaction especially with high powered vessels, which often are used for decades, the tendency of overengineering is imminent. This is mainly based on the lack of reliable testing data and the high costs of towing tank tests and complex hydro dynamic simulations. The paradigm of Closed-Loop Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) can be employed as the enabling technology to overcome this lack of objectiveness by supplying the necessary product usage information to improve these processes. This paper presents an explorative approach towards a fact-based design and development process utilising distributed sensor data acquisition and high performance computing to enhance and validate the hydrodynamic simulations during the development process with the objective to reduce costs and uncertainties while increasing development speed and customer satisfaction. Beyond the related work and detailed description of the solution approach, this paper explores a concrete application experiment and gives conclusions on the applicability of Closed-Loop PLM as well as the other employed technologies.

Distributed Generation (DG) using renewable technologies is increasing due to their benefits including energy security and emission reduction. However, installing new DGs in distributed networks is limited due to network constraints such as feeder capacity and short circuit level, as well as higher investment costs. In this paper, network reconfiguration and reactive power planning are used to maximize DG penetration level and to minimize annual loss for DGs with biomass technologies. In order to model the problem uncertainties, 96 scenarios considering ten different network load levels are studied. A multi-objective method is applied for solving this optimization problem by using Pareto front. The numerical results indicate the positive impacts of the proposed approach on improving the network security.

Building information Modeling (BIM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) have been associated many times in recent literature and the possibilities for their integration or to be mutually used as a source of lesson learned has been envisaged. The paper proposes to analyze, through a systematic literature review approach, the existing state of art of previous studies that has already examined relations between BIM and PLM. The main objective of the paper is to understand the real nature of BIM-PLM association for better directing future research developments.
